Programme Syllabus Sida 1 av Dnr: MDH /10 Programme code: ZCS24 Master s Programme in Software Engineering, 120 This is a translation of the original programme syllabus in Swedish, which was ratified by the Faculty Board on 10 October 2011 and is valid for programmes given after 1 July Objectives Software affects us to an ever-increasing extent, both within industry and in our daily lives. Software Engineering deals with the design and development of high-quality software systems and is thus an increasingly important area of computer science. On completion of the programme the students are very attractive on the labour market nationally as well as internationally, both as experts in industry and in academia as researchers or future doctoral students. After their studies the students will be able to make careers as, for example, engineers, project managers, system architects, programmers or researchers within the area. Knowledge and understanding Within the framework of the Master s programme in Software Engineering the students acquire knowledge, competence and experience in the development of software and softwareintensive systems in a global perspective, and thereby develop the ability to understand, design and implement such systems in the global market. The students are educated to be able to work with software development within different industrial sectors (e.g. home electronics, the automotive industry, telemedicine, telecommunications), information and service sectors (financial institutes, transport services), consultancy, the public sector, the education sector and within academic research. The students accumulate knowledge of the analysis, design and management of large and complex software systems. The students have the opportunity to specialise within two areas: a) software architecture, which comprises knowledge of modern trends which will dominate future software development, which includes dynamic architectures, component-based software development, service-oriented architectures and global system development; b) software engineering of embedded real-time systems, which include knowledge of the analysis, design and management of embedded and software-intensive systems. The students focus on solutions related to reliability, security, use of resources, predictability and similar qualities within real-time and embedded systems. The students are aware of, and trained in working in, cultural, social and financial environments; they know how to communicate in a global network, within a global team, and also how to interpret and make use of diversity in their professional (and private) lives.
Sida 2 av 6 Skills and abilities On completion of the degree programme the student shall: - analytically apply general principles of software development in the development of complex software and software-intensive systems, - demonstrate the necessary understanding of methods and techniques for software management, and also to be able to use these in various development situations, - master general principles and techniques for dealing with quality attributes for various types of software systems (e.g. security and reliability), - understand, plan and carry out independent work within various application domains, - transcend cultural, social and financial differences and work in international teams, - proactively plan and manage his/her future career, as well as personal development, - select suitable tools for analysing and interpreting research findings, with regard to both quantity and quality, and - reflect oneself and critically evaluate one s own ability to deal with complex problems, - search for, read, understand and evaluate research articles and thus be aware of the research front in software development, and also - apply typical research methodologies to produce a research proposal, analyse research findings supported by the examination of existing research literature, and participate in research projects. Critical judgement and approach On completion of the degree programme the student shall: - demonstrate the ability, in, to make assessments with regard to relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects, and also demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work, - demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and the responsibility of human beings for how this is used, and also - demonstrate the ability to identify his/her need of further knowledge and be able to take responsibility for his/her own knowledge development. Language of instruction The language of instruction is English, which includes all teaching, examination and literature, etc. Specific entry requirements A completed Bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education of 3 years or more, equivalent to 180, of which at least 90 are within or Computer Engineering and at least 20 in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. The student will select at least 90 of courses at second-cycle level and a degree project in at second-cycle level corresponding to 30. The student also has the opportunity to choose between various projects, and also the specialisation of the degree project. All courses are selected in consultation with the programme coordinator to ensure the fulfilment of requirements for a degree.
Sida 4 av 6 Host School The School of Innovation, Design and Engineering is the host School for the Master s programme in Software Engineering. Degree The degree programme is so designed that the studies will lead towards fulfilment of the requirements for the following degree(s): - Master of Science (120 ) in. Quality Assurance The School of Innovation, Design and Engineering (IDT) is responsible for the planning of the programme, for programme information, for guiding the programme students and for continual evaluation of the programme. Course evaluations play an important part in the recurring work of improving the programme. Programme evaluations are carried out continually by a steer group with representatives of the University, students and industrial cooperation partners. For the international programme (GSEEM) further evaluations are given by an international board. Student Participation The host School works continually in close cooperation with programme students to involve them in the development of programme courses and to plan the programme. The opportunity is also offered to student representatives to participate in the School s planning and decisionmaking organs for education at first- and second-cycle levels. Research Basis The University s research is conducted primarily within six prioritised specialisations singled out in the University s Education and Research Strategy. The degree programme is linked to the prioritised specialisation of Embedded Systems. The other prioritised specialisations are: Didactics and Intercultural Communication; Innovation and Product Development; Environment, Energy and Resource Optimization; Sustainable Development; Working Life and Management; and Health and Welfare. The Department of Software Engineering, which is responsible for the programme, has several internationally successful researchers in software engineering who actively participate at the biggest conferences within the field. The main research areas within the Department comprise Component-based Software Engineering, Software Processes, and Testing and Development of Reliable Software. All research is carried out in projects with specific goals in respect of publications, joint projects and prototype tools, and we endeavour to allow our research findings to be used in our teaching to as large an extent as possible. The majority of the courses at second-cycle level during the second year present current research, and are given both for programme students and doctoral students at the Department. This prepares our students for a successful career, both in industry and within the School.
Sida 5 av 6 Third Stream Mission The University s work at first-, second- and third-cycle levels is done in cooperation and coproduction with industry, organisations and the public sector both locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. We guarantee quality and industrial relevance within our courses and study programmes with the aid of our industrial partners, who contribute with equipment, guest lectures, and, if possible, by offering employment to our students. Internationalisation Mälardalen University has for a long time considered internationalisation to be one of the most important factors ensuring that education and research maintain good quality. As a student it is good to be exposed to international features during the study period. This contributes towards increasing competence and understanding, both very important qualities in today s labour market. A student choosing assignments with an international profile or taking part in the Student Union s mentoring work can contribute just as much as a stay abroad. Intercultural competence is really important regardless of whether future employment is in Sweden or anywhere else in the world. For more information concerning the opportunities for international studies contact the International Coordinator at the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering. Within the programme the students are given the opportunity, provided the degree requirements are fulfilled, of also obtaining a Master s degree in cooperation with one of the following universities: University of L Aquila; Free University of Amsterdam. Equality Mälardalen University has established organs and processes for dealing with equal treatment and equality between the sexes and between different social groups. We have norms and routines for providing specific support for different groups with regard to equality or the need of support for students with disabilities. Computer Technology is, traditionally, an area where the proportion of female students is low. Because of this we will increase our efforts to recruit more female students. Further, the University s premises are equipped to be able to deal with requirements from students with disabilities. Students with disabilities have their own support service, which can assist in providing the extra equipment required to make their stay at the University as pleasant as possible. For example, there is special equipment for students with impaired vision or hearing. The University also has specialised support for students with dyslexia, and is equipped for taking care of students with different disabilities. A common denominator for most of our premises is that they are new or newly renovated to be able to provide support for students with disabilities.
Sida 6 av 6 Distinctions The programme was awarded a national grant for the ISE project, which supports the development of courses towards a programme for industrial software engineering. During 2009 our programme attained greater heights, when four out of ten teams reaching the final in the competition for software development at ICSE-2009, the internationally highestranked conference in software engineering, came from MDH. The final winner of the competition also came out of these four.
