1 LAGOS HISTORIC CENTER Route of the Portuguese Discoveries The Portuguese Discoveries and Prince Henry The Navigator Period (-60), based in Lagos, is one of the strongest links of Lagos, as the arrival and departure of Caravelas and Naus, the adventure of discovering new lands, latitudes, cultures and unknown people. We invite you to explore, by walk, sites and monuments that tell the history of our city.

2 Caravel (replica) Boa Esperança Date of construction: Nineties Author: Shipyards of Vila do Conde (Portugal) The aim of the Caravel Boa Esperança is to develop the art of sailing, participate in trials and other naval events, and to research the behaviour and manoeuvre of ancient caravels. It has visited Northern European and Mediterranean ports, and has a regular programme of school visits.

3 Monument to the Navigators Lacobrigenses Date: 997 Author: Xana Tribute to the courage and enterprising spirit of lacobrigenses navigators. The set of aluminum spirals, represents three revolutions at the time: technique, culture and geographic knowledge.

4 3 Statue of King D. Sebastião Date: 973 Author: João Cutileiro Monument celebrating the 00th anniversary of the city of Lagos.

5 Slave Market Date: th-7th centuries This space is a mark in the city of Lagos and emblematic of its connection to the Discoveries, being commonly known as a place for the sale of slaves. Currently, comprises a temporary exhibition which aims to explore the link of Lagos to the history of slave trade.

6 Statue of Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry, The Navigator ) Date: 960 Author: Leopoldo de Almeida Monument from 960 has a tribute to Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry, The Navigator ) and the 00th anniversary of his death.

7 6 6 Pier of Discoveries Date: Archaeological works dating from 008. Discovering traces of the old pier (although with several reconstructions over centuries) from where the caravels depart for the Portuguese Discoveries.

8 7 6 7 Manueline window implanted in the same building as the Castle of Governors Date: From the reign of D. Manuel I (9-0) According to tradition, from this window, the portuguese King D. Sebastião has heard his last Mass in 79 before leaving for the Battle Alcácer-Quibir (Marocco).

9 7 6 8 Statue of Gil Eanes Date: 960 Author: Canto da Maia The monument honors Gil Eanes, the portuguese explorer was employed as a shield bearer in the household of Prince Henry, The Navigator. Gil Eanes was born in Lagos and was the first to pass through Cape Bojador in 3. 8

10 7 6 9 The Governors Castle Date: Various dates (re) construction and expansion. Founded by the Arabs, this castle was conquered in 89 by Dom Sancho I. In the th century the military government of the Algarve was established there. Today little is left standing of this once palatial castle, but the Manueline Window remains (7). 9 8
