3 MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the CCSD School Counseling Department is to provide all students with a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program centered around an engaging curriculum that encourages the highest level of student achievement through their growth in academic, personal/social, and career domains. In partnership with all district educators and a caring community, district school counselors will assist all students to be successful lifelong learners and problem solvers.

6 IOWA COLLEGE AID COMMISSION The importance of some type of education beyond high school has become widely evident in recent years, whether it be at a university, community college, trade school or apprenticeship, or by joining the military. Studies show that as educational attainment increases, income increases and the percent of population living in poverty decreases. Those with some type of postsecondary degree are more likely to have health insurance coverage, get out and vote and volunteer in their communities. Students who attend high schools with a strong college climate are more likely to take the steps toward college enrollment.

9 WHAT HAVE WE DONE We are in the classroom for grades 9-12 every year 9 th Grade transcripts 10 th Grade career exploration 11 th Grade college exploration 12 th Grade post secondary planning In each grade go over their individual transcripts, set academic SMART goals, decision making model, 4 year plan

11 COLLEGE APPLICATION DAYS Week before: Gave information to seniors in homeroom about College Application Days Received pertinent information form from Iowa College Aid Commission College Application Days Seniors were called to computer labs by homeroom CCC representatives were available for extra assistance Once students completed applications, online survey from Iowa College Aid was completed data to follow Signed out by letting us know where they applied and then were given information about College Planning Night and a window cling If a student was absent we met with them individually

12 COLLEGE APPLICATION DAYS DATA 201 of our 273 seniors applied to at least one college which is 74% according to the Iowa College Aid Survey (some might not have taken the survey) Even if a student had already applied to a school we made them to the survey If they had other plans (military, work, etc.) we had them at least apply to a community college

26 FAFSA COMPLETION INITIATIVE Online system which follows our students through the FAFSA We are in charge of uploading our senior class roster They then tell us: Who has successfully completed their FAFSA Who has started their FAFSA Non completers Filing issues Who has not filed their FAFSA at all

27 FAFSA COMPLETION INITIATIVE Once a week the file is updated We then met with students who were having issues, who were non completers and those who said they were going to college and had not filed their FAFSA We utilized both our ICAN representative (Lupe Hernandez) and the Financial Aid Officer at CCC (Teresa Theide)
