Advisory: ENGL- 85. This course pertains to the history and philosophy of criminal justice in America. The course will emphasize the three major components of the system: court, corrections, law enforcement, and will then examine the role of each. Describe the evolution of the administration of justice system and its responsibilities to the community. B. Analyze the objectives of the criminal justice system and the role of criminal justice personnel.. ategorize the various agencies, their organizational structure and the roles of each subsystem within the criminal justice system. D. Examine the education, training, and professionalism in the criminal justice system.

2 Page 2 of 5 OURSE REQUIREMENTS: Each student is required to maintain regular class attendance in accordance with school policy. Excessive unexcused absences could result in being dropped from the course or a failing grade. It is the student s responsibility to drop a course by its drop deadline. Students will be required to receive a passing score on a first quiz, mid- term and final examination. Students will also be graded on class participation and readiness to discuss assigned readings and completion of a current events journal. EXTRA REDIT Extra credit assignments will be available to students to improve their grade. LASSROOM ONDUT Open and candid discussions and debates are encouraged. However, disruptive conduct will not be tolerated. Attendance: Attendance is very important. One point will be earned for every hour of class attendance for a total of 50 points. lass roll will be called every class meeting. If you are late to class or leave class early, you will not earn any points. After 6 hours of class absences, I may drop you from the class; however, responsibility remains with the student to drop the class. You are responsible for all material presented in class, whether you are present or not. Exams, quizzes, and homework often include questions on material presented only in class, so performance on these indirectly reflects attendance. LATE ASSIGNMENTS: WILL NOT BE AEPTED FOR FULL REDIT. No more than half credit will be granted for assignments that are turned in late.

3 Page 3 of 5 Assignments will NOT BE AEPTED when an assignment has become seven calendar days past due. Testing: Unannounced quizzes may be given. ALWAYS have a SANTRON FORM 882 and a NUMBER TWO PENIL with you. For scheduled examinations, you MUST have a SANTRON FORM 882, AND a NUMBER 2 PENIL. There will be 6 exams, and an accumulative final exam. The exam questions may be composed of essay, multiple choices, true and false, or fill in the blanks, and /or combinations of these test formats. The final examination will be accumulative. No Make Up Examinations: If you know you will be unable to attend class on the examination date make arrangements with the instructor BEFORE the examination date. URRENT EVENTS JOURNAL Each student will be required to maintain a current events journal. Each student is required to identify and to journal three different current events each week, for 14 weeks, for a total of 48 entries. Students will be excused from entries the 9 th and 18 th weeks of class. Entries are to capture news worthy criminal justice events. A criminal justice event is any event that touches upon any one of the criminal justice components. E.g., events involving the courts, law enforcement, corrections (probation included) that Most significantly, each student should be prepared to discuss an event in class should he or she be called upon. Journals will be collected twice each semester. Each journal must contain the following: 1. Event Date &Title and Summary of Event. 2. Identify which component or components of the criminal justice system is involved in the event.

4 Page 4 of 5 PLAGIARISM: Merced ollege s policy on plagiarism will be strictly enforced (see college catalogue). Any student caught plagiarizing will receive and F on the assignment. If a student is caught plagiarizing a second time, he or she will receive and F in the class. In all cases, written notification will be forwarded to both the area Dean and the Office of Instruction. Borrowing someone else s words (without proper citation and or permission) is illegal and will not be tolerated. All cell phones must be turned off during class instruction. Any cell phone or pager that sounds during class will result in the loss of points from the total possible points on the final exam. For the first offense, there will be a reduction of 5 points. On a second offense there will be a reduction of 15 additional points. On any subsequent offense, there will be an additional reduction of 50 points for each occurrence.
