Systems Management Desktop Management Al Lake LBCC CS140M Fall 2014 Systems Management is a set of software tools and processes that help maintain and update the integrity of the files and applications on a desktop computer, and assist in returning a system to a usable state in case of a problem. Imaging is a tool to replicate the hard drive information to multiple computers and configuring them for use. Fall 2014 CS140M Lake 2 Systems Management Systems management refers to enterprise-wide administration of distributed systems including (and commonly in practice) computer systems. Systems management is strongly influenced by network management initiatives in telecommunications. The Application Performance Management (APM) technologies are now a subset of Systems management. Maximum productivity can be achieved more efficiently through event correlation, system automation and predictive analysis which is now all part of APM. Centralized Management Centralized management has a time and effort trade-off that is related to the size of the company, the expertise of the IT staff, and the amount of technology being used: For a small business startup with ten computers, automated centralized processes may take more time to learn how to use and implement than just doing the management work manually on each computer. A very large business with thousands of similar employee computers may clearly be able to save time and money, by having IT staff learn to do systems management automation. A small branch office of a large corporation may have access to a central IT staff, with the experience to set up automated management of the systems in the branch office, without need for local staff in the branch office to do the work. Software inventory and installation. Anti-virus and anti-malware management. User's activities monitoring. Capacity monitoring. Security management. Storage management. Network capacity and utilization monitoring. Anti-manipulation management Fall 2014 CS140M Lake 5 Network Management Network management refers to the activities, methods, procedures, and tools that pertain to the operation, administration, maintenance, and provisioning of networked systems. Network management is essential to command and control practices and is generally carried out of a network operations center. Operation deals with keeping the network (and the services that the network provides) up and running smoothly. It includes monitoring the network to spot problems as soon as possible, ideally before users are affected. Administration deals with keeping track of resources in the network and how they are assigned. It includes all the housekeeping that is necessary to keep the network under control. Maintenance is concerned with performing repairs and upgrades for example, when equipment must be replaced, when a router needs a patch for an operating system image, when a new switch is added to a network. Maintenance also involves corrective and preventive measures to make the managed network run better, such as adjusting device configuration parameters. Provisioning is concerned with configuring resources in the network to support a given service. 2 FCAPS A common way of characterizing network management functions is FCAPS Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance and Security. The comprehensive management of an organization's information technology (IT) infrastructure is a fundamental requirement. Mean time to repair (MTTR) must be as short as possible to avoid system downtimes where a loss of revenue or lives is possible. System Applet The System applet of the Windows Control Panel and services.msc, Microsoft Management Console Snap-in can dramatically increase the speed of any Windows 7 computer, as perceived by the end-user. After the defragmentation for the C: drive completes, you should defragment any additional hard drives or hard drive partitions where you store data files: Click on the listing of the drive; then click on the Defragment button.
