1 AUCAPATA Art PROJECT EXHIBITION
2 SPONSORS Dr. Ivar Mendez Dr. Ivar Mendez is professor and Chief of Neurosurgery at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. He is also a photographer and sculptor who believes that art and science are synergistic and promote creativity and innovation. Although Dr. Mendez has lived most of his life in Canada, he has a fundamental spiritual attachment to Bolivia, his birthplace. His fundamental goal in establishing the Ivar Mendez International Foundation (IMIF) is to maximize human potential by providing nutrition, health and education to disadvantaged children in Bolivia. Joy Laking For over thirty years Joy has painted Nova Scotia and captured her view of the world on watercolour paper. Joy observes the world around her with attentiveness, passion and keen interest. Her ability to see distinguishes her as an exceptional artist as much as her obvious talent for drawing and composition and her mastery of the medium of watercolour. Joy Laking exemplifies the independence of mind and stamina required to succeed as an artist As an artist you have to believe in yourself. You have to not care what people say because no matter what they say it may not be the right thing. You have to have courage to go against the tide.
3 ABOUT... The Aucapata Art Project, funded by the IMIF, in partnership with the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes (ANBA), has developed a credit program for senior art students through a two-month internship. The students teach visual arts to children in remote rural schools in the Bolivian Andes. This program exposes the children, for the first time, to different modalities of visual arts and stimulates their imagination and artistic expression. It is our hope that this program provides a fertile ground to grow the seeds for the future artists of Bolivia. The first student of the Art Project was Lucy Velasco. She worked with 59 children in the isolated Andean village of Aucapata teaching the basic techniques of watercolor, oil and acrylic painting. They also used materials abundant in their environment, such as clay and natural pigments for sculpture and ceramics. The children participated enthusiastically in the program. An exhibition of all their creations was presented to the community of Aucapata at the end of the two months. All the art materials for this project, provided by the IMIF, were donated to the children to continue with their interest in art. This exhibition at the art gallery of the ANBA in La Paz represents a sample of the artwork by the children of Aucapata.

34 TEACHERS Lucy Velasco Lucy is a senior art student at the ANBA. Her proposal was selected for the first internship. Lucy demonstrated an extraordinary ability to teach the fundamentals of visual arts to the school children of Aucapata. One of the primary objectives of the project, achieved by Lucy, was to introduce indigenous materials into the children s art projects. Her enthusiasm and commitment to the project created a strong bond with the children and the villagers. Lucy s work in Aucapata has set a high standard for future participants of this program. Her stay in Aucapata has left a long-lasting legacy in the minds and imaginations of her students. Angie Salgar Angie is a professor of photography at the ANBA. She specializes in audiovisual art and has directed and produced several short documentaries and films. Angie has also been a camerawoman for well-known Bolivian feature films. She has had numerous solo and group photographic exhibitions across Bolivia. Angie travelled to Aucapata at the end of the project to document Lucy s work with the children. Most of the photographs of both the children and their artwork presented in this exhibition are Angie s. She was an enthusiastic volunteer for this project. 32
