All survey responses, comments and insights have been consolidated for this 2016 Australian Life Insurance & Workers Compensation Market Insights and Salary Guide. This survey was carried out during November 2015 and distributed via an online questionnaire. Marks Sattin received 1324 responses.
3 LIFE INSURANCE & WORKERS COMPENSATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Workers Compensation The Workers Compensation market was buoyant throughout 2015 with all five Scheme Agents and many of the self/specialised insurers hiring at the same levels as previous years. Key skills in demand are those easily transferred from other industries such as rehabilitation, employment services and other insurance lines i.e. CTP and Life Insurance as there is still a huge shortage of workers compensation candidates in the industry. However there has been a significant decrease in the demand for Injury Management Advisors after two of the main Workers Compensation Scheme Agents with a historically high demand for this type of candidate lost their licence towards the end of The results of the 2014 WorkCover tender led to many opting to pursue roles on the employer side or make the move across into the Life Insurance industry. Interestingly, there have also been quite a few senior Workers Compensation professionals willing to take a step back in terms of responsibility to get into Life Insurance. Retaining staff will be a huge challenge for clients this year as the demand for Workers Compensation specialists to join the Life Insurance industry strengthens an industry which offers higher salaries and less compliance from a legislative perspective, both of which are attractive to candidates. As a result salaries look set to increase in 2016 to remain competitive with similar roles within the Life Insurance industry. This was reiterated in the findings from the Marks Sattin survey which found 84% of candidates were expecting a pay increase in the next 12 months. Our advice to clients is to consider hiring more Allied Health professionals, Legal specialists and those with transferable skills to train in the roles at a claims management level. Additionally, we recommend offering more flexibility around working hours, work from home options and part time options (job sharing), as this was found to be the most important benefit in the Marks Sattin survey, particularly for retaining staff. Life Insurance The Life Insurance market is also very candidate driven with candidates in short supply and salaries increasing. In particular, there is a large shortage in both underwriting and claims candidates throughout the Life Insurance industry. Clients are now looking for candidates with transferable skills particularly those with Allied Health qualifications and rehabilitation experience. Claims departments are continuing to grow in size due to the increase in Life Insurance policies being sold at both the Group and Retail level. The Australian public is becoming more aware of the need for personal cover which is having a significant knock on effect at the back office operational level within Life Insurance companies. Our advice to clients is to continue to hire those candidates with transferable skills, in particular those with Workers Compensation, Health Insurance and CTP claims experience, as well as Allied Health professionals/legal professionals.
