2 BIOPLASTICS AND THE EUROPEAN BIOECONOMY WELCOME 8 June 2015, Vienna Peter Traupmann Hasso v. Pogrell Welcome from the organisers Hello and welcome to the Vienna Seminar on Bioplastics and the European Bioeconomy. We are delighted that you have found the time to join us today, and we hope that you will enjoy the event! The aim of this seminar is to bring together a select group of people who be it in public office, private businesses, academia, or civil society organisations are involved in the important process of advancing the bioeconomy in Europe and at Member State level. We all aim for a gradual shift towards an economy that is more attuned to the vital demands of resource efficiency and transgenerational sustainability. Making our economies fit for the future requires us to collectively reduce our impact on the environment e.g. by efficiently using renewable resources in use cascades or by extending material and product life cycles through recycling. Connecting these changes to the industrial renaissance of Europe and employment growth is a challenge the bio-industries such as the European bioplastics industry are fit to meet. The programme has three major components: a scientific perspective on the foundations and potential applications of plastics that are biobased, biodegradable, or both; a discussion of current policy developments on the EU level, in Austria, and in the Netherlands; and through the example of the bioplastics industry - the business case delivered by companies involved in developing innovative bioplastic solutions. To ensure a dynamic exchange of knowledge and positions there will be plenty of opportunities for organisations not featured in the seminar programme to introduce themselves to the audience in open microphone sessions. Furthermore, the seminar will offer several networking breaks including an evening reception in the Sofitel s skybar. We would like to thank our sponsor, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vienna, for their generous support of the event. May it enable fruitful discussions and equip you with new impulses and interesting contacts. Yours sincerely, Peter Traupmann Chief Executive Officer Austrian Energy Agency Hasso v. Pogrell Managing Director European Bioplastics

Bringing together key players from the Austrian and Dutch bioplastics industry creates a stimulating environment where important steps and opportunities for both countries can be identified and future standards can be discussed. The Netherlands focuses on a realistic, yet ambitious green growth strategy. Our country has a lot of expertise to offer to make a meaningful contribution to the rapid development of renewable energy sources like sun, wind, biomass and geothermal energy; a high-quality chemical industry; an innovative agricultural sector; and big ports. This strong base provides an excellent framework to work on themes like climate-change and the reduction of the use of fossil fuels. In recent years, many promising biobased initiatives have started already and are currently being developed further. In this way, the biobased economy becomes essential in a strategy of green growth. In 2017, the import- and export quota for sugar beets will be modified. The Netherlands has ideal climate conditions for sugar beets, and can therefore become a major supplier of sugar beets as raw material for the chemical industry. I am convinced that there are also various opportunities for Austria to create a biobased economy. Both countries can be leading actors in realizing the European bioeconomy agenda, and I am optimistic that this seminar will be part of an ongoing dialogue between our countries. For today, I expect many fruitful discussions and hope they will equip you all with the right impulses and interesting contacts. Yours sincerely, Peter van Wulfften Palthe, Ambassador of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in Austria
5 8 June 2015, Vienna SPEAKER FACULTY BIOPLASTICS AND THE EUROPEAN BIOECONOMY Speaker faculty The seminar aims to give an overview of bioeconomy initiatives on the European level as well as in Austria and the Netherlands, and to discuss the potential of the emerging bioplastics industry within this context. To that end, we have asked a line-up of highly experienced professionals from academia, business, politics, and civil society to contribute to the proceedings. We hope that the presentations and panel discussions will provide plenty of food for thought and, of course, for fruitful debates throughout the day and beyond.
