6 Highlights from Bremerton s first year Assessment Highlights: low school performance and a school dropout rate that is higher than the County or the State. High rates of first generation college students & high rate of skipping school. Mental health - high rate of depression, suicidal thoughts & attempts. Rate of 30 day use among Bremerton High School s 12 th graders is higher than the State average for tobacco, alcohol and marijuana. Youth report a lower perception of harm from drinking and drug use. Youth exposed to favorable alcohol and marijuana messages from peers, family, and the community

Every 16 minutes someone in the US dies by suicide. Youth and young adults face and experience mental health and substance use challenges differently than adults. Early detection and treatment of mental health disorders and substance use concerns is important. DO YOU KNOW HOW TO HELP? A Training for Young People Assisting Their Peers Youth Mental Health First Aid is the help offered to a young person experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge, mental health disorder, or a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate help is received or until the crisis resolves. This acclaimed 8-hour certificated course teaches signs and symptoms of common mental health problems, when and where to get help, and will teach participants a 5-step method that can be used when young people are experiencing a mental health concern. This training is specifically for high school juniors and seniors. Parent/guardian consent required.
