The HDA joins forces with the National Dental Association and the Society of American Indian Dentists for Joint Annual Meeting July 20-24, 2012 in Boca Raton, Florida Three of the nation s premier dental organizations for ethnic minorities will join forces and cultures to host a historic joint annual convention July 20-24, 2012 in Boca Raton, Florida. The organizations are the National Dental Association (NDA), Hispanic Dental Association (HDA), and Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID). Collectively, they represent the needs and concerns of African American, Hispanic, and American Indian oral health professionals and the communities they serve. The theme of the conference, billed as the Multi-Cultural Oral Health Summit is: Collectively Meeting the Needs of a Diverse Population to Improve Oral Health. I am delighted to be a part of this historic undertaking. Our organizations share a common bond- communities that have been traditionally underserved and providers that have been woefully underrepresented in the health professions. I look forward to this collaboration and to future collective efforts to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities in America, stated Dr. Sheila R. Brown, President of the DC based National Dental Association. The Society of American Indian Dentists is excited to continue the collaborating efforts of organizations representing underserved populations. 4 Recap on Dia del Dentista (Day of the Dentist) Saint Apollonia MHDA celebrated Dia del Dentista with a Lunch and Learn with Premier Dental Products Company *2Pro Total Access* Top Hygiene Product and Enamel Pro Varnish at Upham s Corner Health Center. The Hispanic Dental Association is continually working to develop programs that build camaraderie and collegiality for its membership and introduce programs that create awareness and promote oral health for the Hispanic community. Continuing what began in 2011, we proposed that all members actively promote and celebrate in some way el Dia del Dentista a day that has traditionally been celebrated for many years in Latin American countries as the official Day of the Dentist. In the Catholic religion, the Feast Day of the Patron Saint Saint Apollonia was February 9 th. Apollonia was a young, virtuous woman of Christian faith during the reign of Emperor Philip. However, under Philip s reign, Christians were persecuted. At the hands of persecutors, Apollonia was tortured including having all of her teeth violently pulled out or shattered. She was threatened with fire if she did not renounce her Faith. Apollonia chose to jump into the flames and died a martyr in the year of 249. Saint Apollonia is considered the Patron Saint of dentistry and for those suffering with toothaches. (Source: Catholic Online and Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/saint_apollonia). Many HDA Professional Chapter members gathered together during to celebrate Dia del Dentista. Many held community events offering dental services and patient education, hosted educational sessions, gathered for networking opportunities and more. Tell us about how you and/or your chapter celebrated Dia del Dentista. So your stories can be included in the HDA newsletter. We look forward to hearing from you. 5 Message from the Legislative Consultant Keeping Hispanic Oral Health Visible amid Gridlocked Congress Andrew Kaffes Legislative Consultant A new year is underway and so is the second session of the 112nd Congress. In an election year where not much is expected to be accomplished legislatively amid Washington gridlock, we must do our part to ensure that oral health issues, and specifically Hispanic oral health, remain highly visible to legislators on Capitol Hill. The Hispanic Oral Health survey published in November in collaboration with Crest and Oral-B can be a helpful tool utilized to convey to members of Congress the current state of Hispanic oral health in the United States. Already, HDA has distributed the survey s findings to the Congressional Oral Health Caucus and to the leadership of both the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Congressional Hispanic Conference. Our main objective this year will be to increase the involvement and participation of these congressional bodies on matters pertaining to Hispanic oral health. The critical data provided by the survey can be used to reinforce the importance of access to care and cultural competence to policymakers as oral health policy discussions develop. In addition, HDA will build upon the congressional outreach it began in 2011 to introduce Hispanic oral health issues to as many legislators as possible. During the latter part of 2011, the need to rebut the efforts of an anti-fluoridation movement became increasingly evident especially as the movement targeted ethnic or minority populations. As a result, since HDA s 2011 Annual Meeting in San Diego, the HDA Legislative Committee and Board of Trustees have been working to finalize an HDA Position Brief on community water fluoridation that provides a formal and official policy position endorsing community water fluoridation in all communities. Moreover, the policy position calls for Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin to follow in the footsteps of her predecessors and issue a statement in support for community water fluoridation. Once finalized, the HDA position brief can be distributed to Hispanic communities of the United States in the effort to combat the anti-fluoridation movement. Also from a policy perspective, HDA worked with dental organizations such as the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry to offer comments on the U.S. Department Health and Human Services Essential Health Benefits Guidance (that includes a pediatric oral health benefit) pursuant to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). The comments were presented in a January 31, 2012 letter and sought to ensure a pediatric health benefit in the essential health benefits package reflects the current market as accurately as possible. Overall with ACA, we must work to preserve the oral health provisions that serve to meet our mission. Although Congress does not offer much hope for action as the nation approaches a pivotal November 2012 election, it is important to realize there is always work to be done when it comes to keeping Hispanic oral health at the forefront in Washington or working to improve or implement the policies that impact the dental profession. HDA Leadership Represents Association Mission at Key Dental Meetings Thank you for the opportunity of representing the HDA at the FDI meeting in Mexico City org/. I had the opportunity to lecture on Friday September 15th to over 300 Dental Students at the Universidad Anahuac Dental School, and Saturday at the FDI meeting with a full room (see attached) in both lectures I invited the audience to come to San Diego to our annual meeting. Dr. Robles the Dean at the University Anahuac is interested in participating and potentially sending some Dental Student, who knows we may get the first HDA Student Chapter in Mexico City. 6 Model of Care for Hispanic Obese Children and Adolescents Action Steps for HDA HEALTH MATTERS OF U.S. HISPANICS: ORAL HEALTH, A PATHWAY TO BETTER GENERAL HEALTH Behavioral PANEL LEADER Sara G. Grossi, DDS, MS Patient Family PANEL COORDINATOR Patient Community Magda A. de la Torre, RDH, MPH THE FULL LIST OF PANEL PARTICIPANTS IS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT NUTRITION MEDICAL/ DENTAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Increase education pipeline for Hispanic dentists and faculty by encouraging targeted scholarships, recruiting in underserved areas, promoting dentistry over medicine, Chronic Care Model Chronic diseases, whether oral or systemic, exhibit an important lifestyle/behavioral component, and affect the patient in the family/ society context. Behavioral modification and management of chronic conditions by necessity need to extend beyond the individual patient into the family as a whole and the community/social environment. The chronic care model should be emulated for control of oral disease and management of obesity. For Hispanics, the primary cultural underpinning is that preventive and treatment programs for chronic conditions are culturally sensitive and family-centered. The East Carolina University Model The East Carolina University Pediatric Healthy Weight Research and Treatment Center provides treatment and prevention of childhood obesity through implementing a holistic chronic care model. Children attending the ECU Healthy Weight Center exhibit a host of metabolic abnormalities, including hypertension, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, prediabetes, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease in these high-risk children is part of the overall management of obesity and prevention of development of diabetes. Treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis and maintenance of periodontal health is integral to the medical treatment of obesity, restoring metabolic balance and reducing the risk for further co-morbidity. Education and reinforcement of oral general health related messages to the patient and family network is constantly provided at every dental/obesity clinic encounter. Treatment and prevention of periodontal disease by virtue of the need for substantial and consistent change in daily habits offers a framework for implementing additional lifestyle changes. Promoting education of children and parents in healthy lifestyles and disease prevention will go a long way in reducing the burden of disease in Hispanics and eliminate health disparities. The ECU model is easily implemented in children and adult patients alike and illustrates that oral health is indeed a pathway to general health. 6 HDA News & Reports Issue No. 167 Winter 2012 increasing post-baccalaureate programs, and supporting improvement in math and science performance. 8 Business Practice Consumer Analysis - How Would Your Practice Stack Up? by Sally McKenzie CEO, McKenzie Management It s all about relationships. You ve likely heard that line many times. No matter what the profession, relationships are important. But in dentistry, they are critical. Relationships build or break the practice. The relationships you establish with your patients as you are addressing their oral health care needs and wants can last a lifetime. Once they are in the practice, these patients get to know you and your team. They appreciate what you have to offer. But what about the individuals who are considering your practice, but haven t made their first appointment yet and have no established relationship? They are looking at their dental options from a consumer s point of view. And like it or not, they are judging your practice against others and basing that judgment on criteria you may not feel is fair. As most of us in the business of providing a service know, consumers have very high expectations. If you had to step back and take a good hard look at your practice from the consumer s point of view, what would you discover? Conduct a Consumer Analysis of your practice and compare it to two other practices that you are competing with for patients. Develop a series of criteria and score your practice - or ask a friend or relative to score your practice - against the others. Use a scale of 1-5 with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. Then step back and honestly consider how you stack up in the consumers minds, starting with convenience. How conveniently located is your practice compared to your competitors? Is parking a problem, is your practice difficult to find, are their stairs patients have to climb? Do you offer convenient appointment times to accommodate busy schedules? Can new patients get an appointment within two weeks, or is the business staff telling them they ll have to wait months? New patients will not wait two, four, six months for an appointment. If you don t make room for them in your schedule promptly, you don t want them in your practice. What kind of a first impression does your building make? Will prospective patients say to themselves That looks like a nice office, or will they say I wouldn t want my car parked in that lot. If a prospective patient calls your office, what impression will your practice make? Is the person answering the phone helpful, or does the caller feel like they are just another interruption? Does the front office ask the caller if they can be put on hold, or are they just clicked into silence? Are they prepared to answer key questions that prospective patients are likely to have? Does the person answering the phone have a welcoming or annoyed tone to their voice? Never forget that the employee answering the phone in your office represents the entire team. And in the first few seconds, the caller is making judgments about the quality of your care and the helpfulness of your staff. It may not be fair, but it s reality. If you have even a glimmer of doubt about the impression your practice makes with callers, ask a couple of friends to pose as prospective patients and give you feedback on their telephone experience. Flaunt your expertise. Brag about each other. You simply cannot overemphasize the expertise of the doctor and the team. Take every opportunity to convey the message of excellence and quality. If a patient asks a team member if the doctor is good at a particular procedure, answer with an emphatic Yes! S/he is the best. The new patient packet and the practice website should give information about the entire team s training and experience, particularly the doctor s. Routinely, inform patients about continuing education classes staff have participated in. This is as simple as placing an 8x10 frame at the reception counter that highlights the staff member s accomplishment. For example, Please join us in congratulating Dr. Jones for her recent certification from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Name your price. Make it easy for patients to accept treatment and pay for that treatment. Provide clear financing options that are both practice friendly and patient friendly. Partner with a patient financing company, such as CareCredit. These firms provide excellent financing options that benefit both doctor and patient. Pay attention to the seemingly insignificant details. They have a huge impact on whether the consumer/ potential patient makes an appointment with you, or with the dentist down the street. 12 HDA Professional Chapter News HDA San Diego/Baja Chapter By: Dr. Mario Orozco SD HDA President On January 7, the HDA San Diego/Baja Chapter paid a visit to Hogar Nueva Generacion in a humble neighborhood in Tijuana, Mexico. During this visit, members of the HDA and friends shared lunch, played fun games and delivered joy and presents to 24 children who call this place home. During this time we had the opportunity to get acquainted with the little residents, and while we brought presents, they provided us with genuine expressions of gratitude, happy smiles and buckets of hope. This event was supported by Mr. Edgar Rivera, Territory Manager in Miami for Crest Oral B who generously donated customized preventive kits for the children; HDA members who provided presents and their valuable time; and GIFVT project staff who generously donated presents, and their valuable time for this event. Tips on Cultural Competency Sarita Arteaga DMD, MAGD Demographics The Hispanic population currently represents 16 percent of the U.S. population (about 50 million people) and projections by the Census Bureau place the percentage of Hispanics in the US at one in three US Residents by the year The US Office of Management and Budget issued the Race and Ethnic Standard for Federal Statistics and Administrative Reporting and added ethnic classifications of Hispanic Origin and Not of Hispanic Origin. Hispanics come from more than 20 different countries and 63% of Mexican origin, 10% of Puerto Rican origin, 3.8% of Cuban descent and 2.2% from the Dominican Republic. 18 Hispanic Dental Association Endorses Community Fluoridation Background Fluoride is a naturally-occurring element found in all water sources, soils, and even in the food that is consumed. Water fluoridation is the process of adjusting the natural fluoride content of water to the optimum level that prevents tooth decay. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes water fluoridation as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century. More than 50 years of research has scientifically proven its safety and public health benefits, including the reduction and prevention of tooth decay. More than more than 100 national and international organizations have recognized the public health benefits of community water fluoridation, including the American Public Health Association, American Association of Public Health Dentistry, American Dental Association, International Association for Dental Research, and National Dental Association, among others. In his 2004 report Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General, Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona stated, community water fluoridation continues to be the most cost-effective, equitable and safe means to provide protection from tooth decay in the community. Surgeon General Carmona added: More than 170 million people, or 67 percent of the U.S. population served by water supplies, drink water with optimal fluoride levels for preventing decay. Of the 50 largest cities in the country, 43 are fluoridated. An economic analysis determined that in most communities every $1 invested in fluoridation saves more than $38 or more in treatment costs. Optimal Level of Water Fluoridation According to the U.S. Public Health Service, the optimal fluoridation level is between.7 milligrams and 1.2 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed a recommendation of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water to replace the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams. Disparities Because the mission of the Hispanic Dental Association works toward the elimination of oral health disparities in the Hispanic community, the benefits of community water fluoridation (CWF) to aid in the reduction of disparities in tooth decay is critical to the HDA s endorsement of community water fluoridation. A recent survey conducted to measure Hispanic oral health revealed that 30% of Hispanics do not know, or incorrectly believe to be true, that cavities will go away on their own if you brush regularly. Therefore, CWF helps reduce disparities in tooth decay prevalence. Surgeon General Carmona affirmed this by stating, Fluoridation is the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health over a lifetime, for both children and adults. HDA Position Therefore, it is the position of the Hispanic Dental Association to: 1. Endorse community water fluoridation as a safe, beneficial and cost-effective public health measure for preventing dental caries. 2. Recommend all communal water supplies to achieve an optimal fluoridation level of at least.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water Encourage local dental and/ or oral health societies and the community at-large, to work with state and local governments and their agencies, in support of community water fluoridation, including making available the scientific knowledge and resources that support the benefits of CWF. Especially encourage and facilitate the use of water fluoridation in local municipal water supplies of underserved areas to aid in the reduction of oral health disparities. Call on Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin to follow in the footsteps of her predecessors who since the 1950s have issued a statement in support for community water fluoridation. 18 HDA News & Reports Issue No. 167 Winter
