The County is fortunate to have major solar and geothermal resources, with significant wind and bio mass resources as well. A significant amount of these geothermal resources, around 2,000 MW, mainly geothermal, are likely to be economic by 2016 in what we view as a conservative base case. A much greater amount of resources, over 24,000 MW, mainly solar, could be economic by Imperial County extends over 4,597 square miles, or 2.9 million acres, bordering on Mexico to the south, Riverside County to the north, an Diego County on the west, and the tate of Arizona on the east. The Bureau of Land Management has received 163 applications to build solar and wind projects on 1.6 million acres of federal land in California. The RP energy projects, including wind, solar, and geothermal also contribute to the state's climate change goals of reducing green house gasses to 1990 levels by 2020 and 80% below 1990 emissions levels by 2050, making the success and expansion of RP energy generation a key priority for California's economic and environmental future. Geological urvey has designated nine Know Geothermal Resource Areas in Imperial County. This county is uniquely blessed with abundant and invaluable natural resources. Our agribusiness community has harnessed the benefits of our soil, sunshine and water for the production of ag commodities. But that same sunshine, the earth's heat beneath that soil, along with a little bit of that precious water is now being combined to produce another commodity we can ship to consumers outside the Valley, in the form of renewable energy. As the state and nation move to a cleaner, greener energy future, a future less dependent on unreliable foreign sources, we are in a position to play a major role in shaping that future. Today Imperial County is the second largest producer of geothermal power in the country, and soon to be number one. New projects like the Ormat Brawley North plant are coming on line and are already contributing dollars and jobs to our county. olar energy we've got that too. tirling Energy's olar Two facility, when completed, will be the largest solar generator in the world. Infrastructure will play a huge part here also, and with projects like the unrise Powerlink and IID's transmission upgrades, we are well on the road to seeing the promise of these resources fulfilled. Combine this with biofuel and biomass potential, which will fit perfectly with our agricultural base, and we have the makings of a second Gold Rush, except this one will be a Green Rush, and a lot of the economic benefits will occur right here. The recent IID ummit Blue report points to the potential of up to 8,000 new jobs for Imperial County in the energy sector. Our county must seize this opportunity to assure that these new industries succeed and thrive. While energy is a big part of our economic future, it will not be the only part. Our strategic geographic location, in the midst of huge population centers and along the border with Mexico assures us that we will continue to develop as a hub of trade and commerce.
