4 CLOUD PLATFORMS Everybody seems to be offering them these days, whether you re buying a new phone, installing a new operating system or just the constant barrage of advertising on the topic. It s no wonder that the phase has a large range of interpretations both personally and technically. Within the corporate and business world it s understandable why it s not always clear the benefits cloud can provide when looking at the deployment of SAP systems within the banking sector. At HCL AXON we classify cloud and the as a Service variations of it as follows: Cloud the ability to offer any IT infrastructure or service on a virtual basis to enable it to be tuned on or off as required PaaS the ability to offer an entire platform as a service IaaS just the infrastructure (virtualized hosting) SaaS everything including the licences and software (e.g. Salesforce) PaaS somewhere in the middle (Application + Hosting). So firstly let s take a look at the key business drivers within the Banking industry that can initiate the decision to look at Cloud systems. The decision to adopt cloud solutions should, like any other business investment, be driven by a clear business requirement (e.g. TCO, Agility etc). Analyst and marketplace trends also show how the adoption of as a Service solutions have matured over the last 2 years, showing a strong trend towards managed platforms that include application services, this trend is set to double over the next 3 years: Marketplace temperature check Within the SAP Marketplace analyst reviews now position IaaS services as one of the fastest growing areas within the IT industry. In 2013 the expected market value of this is set to meet $8bn (up from $6.8bn) and it s on target to top $10bn by PaaS services have also enjoyed a large take-up within the market place doubling over the last 2 years and set to grow even more aggressively over the next few years with the uptake of the PaaS services natively from hardware are software vendors as part of their standard service offerings. At the most integrated end of the services scale (SaaS) the spending profile is more gradual but trends are showing an increase in large deployment programmes multi-thousand deals are becoming increasingly common.
