3 Come and learn about efficiency Raw materials are becoming scarce and their prices are rising on the world market. Thrifty use of these resources also benefits climate and the environment. This is reason enough to encourage resource efficiency in production. But little or no action is being taken, even though companies could save 10-15% of their energy and material costs. We show our students how and, of course, why.

5 A unique program in Business Studies Efficiency in production is associated with engineering, and green technology is associated with environmental sciences. Good engineers are needed here, but all this needs to be managed as well. The aim of the course is to train future managers and coordinators who understand these issues. It leads to a Bachelor s Degree in Business Studies specialising in technological and ecological issues.

7 Details of the program The study program runs for seven semesters and leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. The degree qualifies graduates for the employment market, as well as for a higher program leading to a Master s degree. The fifth semester includes a mandatory internship in a company. The sixth semester can be used for a period of study abroad at one of our many partner universities. In the seventh semester students have three months to write a thesis paper, generally based in a company. Candidates should be interested in interdisciplinary connections between business, engineering and the environment, want to work with people, and not be afraid of mathematics or technology. The program requires a good command of English.

9 Looking to the future Alongside classic business studies, you will also gain a grounding in manufacturing and efficiency. But the curriculum focuses above all on Industrial Ecology and Life Cycle Thinking: How can mankind produce and consume using nature as a model? For example by thinking in cycles, or always assessing product life cycles holistically in both economic and ecological terms. Pforzheim University has been conducting research into these questions for many years in its Institute for Industrial Ecology, and has acquired extensive practical experience through many cooperative arrangements with business and industry.

10 What our supporters say: I say that we can save 20% of the electricity we use via efficiency measures. That is the start of the exit from nuclear power. 11 The Pforzheim Model Pforzheim University is one of the universities of applied sciences with a very long and successful tradition in teaching business studies. The focus is on practice-orientated education, which is important for starting a career as future manager. To this end, students choose a field of specialization that accounts for about 30% of the program at the beginning of their studies. Together with the internship (in the fifth semester) and the thesis (in the seventh semester), the area of specialisation makes up 50% of the studies, for example looking at all aspects of consumption of resources and environmental protection.

12 What our supporters say: Renewable energy sources are important; there is no question about it. But economical use by both manufacturers and consumers is equally important. We need to follow both avenues to achieve our goals in climate protection and phasing out nuclear energy. That is the task of the future for today s student generation. 13 A first-class Business School As yet Pforzheim University is the only university of applied sciences in Germany at which it is possible to acquire an internationally accredited Bachelor s degree. The business economics programs satisfy the highest international requirements, as is certified by the world s leading accreditation institution, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Only six other universities in Germany besides Pforzheim have earned this hallmark of excellence, and worldwide fewer than 5% of Business Schools. The accreditation highlights the quality of studies, teaching and applied research, and efforts to constantly improve these. Graduates profit from this reputation on the employment market.
