IBM Canada Alberta Region IBM IN ALBERTA: Helping our province and the world work better
IBM: A name synonymous with progress IBM is an integral part of the global business landscape, backed by a century of business and systems innovation. Over the years, our company has evolved, anticipating and responding to changes in the world changes in technology and changes in client needs. Today, we are more than a hardware, software and services provider, yet we remain true to our heritage as a team of collaborative forward-thinkers, focused on making business and society work better. In Canada, IBM is one of the country s largest software development, business services and consulting organizations; a leader in research and development, investing more than $541 million in 2010; and a significant exporter, generating $1.8 billion in export revenue that same year. IBM has been in Alberta since 1917 and has strong roots in the province. Our employees are doing important work that has a positive impact locally, nationally and globally. Our Values Three principles define IBM as a company: Dedication to every client s success; Innovation that matters for our company and for the world; Trust and personal responsibility in all relationships. These are our core values. They re reflected in our company, in our people and in our commitment to the communities where we live and work. They guide everything we do.
For more than a century, IBM has been committed to innovation in Canada, as demonstrated through the creativity and dedication of our exceptional workforce. As we turn to IBM s second century, we see tremendous opportunities for our communities, our clients, our country and our world as we all learn how to work smarter. - John Lutz, President, IBM Canada Ltd. Did you know: IBM partners with more than 65 Alberta-based technology firms to deliver high quality products and services to local, national and even international clients; The IBM Global PeopleSoft Solution Centre, managed out of Edmonton, employs the largest concentration of Oracle (PeopleSoft) professionals in Canada, providing services for clients locally and globally, including managing the Integrated Information System for the Province of Alberta; IBM is Alberta s most respected corporation in the category of Technology and Life Sciences, based on a 2009 Alberta Venture magazine poll. We have also been recognized as one of the top 25 energy innovators in 2010 by Alberta Oil Magazine; Over the past five years, IBM and our employees made contributions of more than $1.8M to Alberta charities and non-profit organizations, and our employees have volunteered more than 40,000 hours in their communities.
Dedication to every IBM has always been dedicated to helping our clients solve problems and succeed. This dedication pushes us to go above and beyond for our clients, building strong, long-lasting relationships. In Alberta, our expertise lies in creating solutions to meet the needs of local organizations, from small and mediumsized commercial businesses to large public sector institutions. Some of our recent local collaborations include: Healthcare in Alberta: For over a decade, IBM has managed the IT Infrastructure for Alberta Health and Wellness (AHW), and the Calgary location for Alberta Health Services (AHS). We have worked in partnership with AHW since 1998 to successfully develop, staff and manage the deployment of Alberta s Electronic Health Record (EHR) System. A province-wide clinical health information network securely links health region staff, community physicians, community pharmacists, primary care networks and other authorized health care professionals, IBM also designed, developed and helped implement a comprehensive drug information system for Alberta that helps ensure prescriptions are dispensed accurately and quickly. We also provide consulting and project management skills to assist AHW and AHS in several areas, including Information Technology, Networking, Corporate and Clinical Applications. ReLM (Recreational Licensing Management): IBM provides business process services for the sale of fishing and hunting licences on behalf of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. IBM is responsible for all licensing services including an issuer network of 450 retailers, seven days per week help desk, electronic collection and distribution of licence revenues, application management services, managed system operations and a e-commerce Web site. Every year, over 300,000 people purchase fishing and hunting licences through ReLM. Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD): IBM is working with the CCSD to implement a system to track schools power usage and reduce energy and maintenance costs. IBM is helping the district transform their schools into smart buildings that use new green technologies to save money and manage facilities and assets more efficiently. Edmonton Police Service: Police in Edmonton are using an IBM business intelligence solution to analyze millions of historical records on incidents, offenses, arrests and calls-for-service. Real-time data analysis helps police quickly identify crime problems and associated trends so they can better determine their response. Analysis of dispatch delays and travel times has also enabled police to reduce overall response time. North West Redwater Partnership: IBM is the IT partner of North West Redwater Partnership, the first green-field refinery in North America for over two decades. Our industry and strategy consultants developed a long term IT strategy and implementation plan and continue to advise North West on developing its IT capabilities. IBM software, hardware and outsourcing services give North West a reliable, scalable and costeffective IT foundation to support their rapid growth, while IBM s innovative, industry-focused solutions will drive significant operating cost reduction.

Building a Smarter Planet IBM s business strategy is focused on building a smarter planet a world where intelligence is infused into the systems and processes that make business and society work. 1 3 Instrument the world s systems 2 Interconnect them Make them intelligent A smarter planet is built on three big ideas: In today s world, data is being captured at an unprecedented rate from a vast number of devices. The ability to analyze this data and glean intelligence from it is key to driving progress for business and society. The innovation and leadership described on these pages, demonstrate the important role IBM in Alberta is playing in making smarter planet a reality. IBM Alberta is home to some of the most creative and innovative people in our province. Together with our partners in government, business and academia, we are working to ensure that Alberta is well-positioned to lead and win in today s globally-integrated economy. Building a Smarter City As one of the first 24 cities worldwide and the only Canadian city to receive an IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant, the City of Edmonton collaborated with IBM s Smarter Cities Challenge team in a consulting engagement worth approximately $400,000(US). Together, the team looked at how to improve the integration, analysis and dissemination of data that can be used for decision making across the city, with a specific focus on traffic. The resulting recommendations, when implemented, will position Edmonton as a global leader in smarter urban traffic safety. Driving Innovation & Skills Development for Sustainable Economic Growth The IBM Alberta Centre for Advanced Studies (Alberta CAS) is a joint effort between IBM, the Government of Alberta, the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, encouraging collaborative research and development in the province. Alberta CAS supports Campus Alberta and focuses on areas that align with the Alberta Innovates research agenda and IBM s Smarter Planet strategy. Since its inception in 2005, Alberta CAS has delivered over $6 million of cash and in-kind funding contributions to Alberta researchers and continues to make a positive impact on research and economic development in the province. the City of Edmonton collaborated with IBM s Smarter Cities Challenge team in a consulting engagement worth approximately $400,000(US). Transforming Government Services IBM recently completed the consolidation of several Service Alberta mainframe environments into a single services infrastructure. This transformation, which is the first of a four-phase integrated government services project, provides efficient and standardized shared services across a number of government ministries, improving service delivery and reducing overall cost and complexity. The transition was completed approximately one year ahead of schedule, with minimal impact to Albertans and with no unplanned service outages.
Advancing Alberta s Energy & Environmental Leadership Alberta WaterPortal: IBM has joined forces with the Alberta Society for Sustainable Water Management and Related Technologies (AlbertaWaterSMART) and the Bow River Basin Council (BRBC) to support an initiative called WaterPortal. This collaboration is designed to help manage Alberta s water supply and will enable free and open sharing of data, information, dialogue and knowledge on ground and surface water conditions, water management policies, best practices, and conservation initiatives in Alberta and around the world. Smarter Oil Centre of Excellence: This Centre of Excellence is a world-class collaborative environment designed to foster and develop innovative business and technology solutions and risk mitigation strategies. The opportunity presented by Alberta s oil sands is enormous and industry partnerships and collaboration are paramount to capitalizing on it. The Centre is bringing together the global research capabilities of IBM and its technology partners to address challenges such as: Health, Safety and Environmental Management, Capital Project Delivery, Enterprise Asset Management, Reservoir Simulation, Operational Excellence, and Industry Collaboration.
Trust and personal responsibility in all relationships Canadian Corporate Citizenship in Numbers 92,030 volunteer hours logged by IBM Canada employees in ,260 Canadian charities supported annually through the Employees Charitable Fund 7 active diversity network groups for employees 1935 The year company policy was created to ensure men and women who perform equal work receive equal pay Flexible work policies reduce employee carbon emissions by up to 50% 99.5%+ of e-waste is recycled $1.3M+ saved through energy conservation initiatives in 2010 While our products and services have evolved over our history, the face of IBM always has been and always will be the IBMer. IBMers are known for integrity, excellence, quality, innovation, deep skills and an ability to collaborate with people from organizations of all shapes and sizes, across all industries. We pride ourselves on building relationships based on trust and respect, not just internally, but with our clients, suppliers, investors, governments and communities. A model corporate citizen across Canada For generations, IBM has shared its expertise with the communities in which we operate through activities such as corporate grant programs, volunteerism, education initiatives and our annual employees charitable fund campaign. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion, which internally ensures an understanding, respectful and accommodating workplace, also extends into the community. And from an environmental perspective, we strive to minimize the potential impact of our own operations, while applying our capabilities to help our clients and partners do the same. These are just a few of the ways IBM approaches corporate responsibility in Canada.
IBM in Alberta IBM and its employees make a difference in the lives of Alberta citizens in many ways. These are just a few examples of our recent contributions. Smarter Communities: In 2011, IBM celebrated its Centennial by partnering with CentrePoint Non-Profit Management to offer a day-long Social Media Workshop for over 100 Alberta non-profit agencies. At the workshop, IBM consultants provided tips and tools to help the agencies in the development of their social media strategies and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, spoke about his use of social media and the need to ensure social media strategies speak with an authentic voice. Following the workshop, attendees benefit from a one-on-one follow-up with an IBM volunteer. Women in Technology: An IBM program that reaches out to young women through workshops, career days and conferences to encourage math and science studies as well as to showcase the wide range of careers available in the Information Technology industry. Since its inception over a decade ago, more than 5,000 young women in Alberta have successfully participated. Great Kids Award: This program recognizes youth aged five to 18 who demonstrate considerable effort in school, participate in their community through volunteer service and contribute to the quality of home life by willingly assuming responsibilities within the family. IBM has supported this program annually since it s inception in 1999, donating nearly 200 computers to outstanding Alberta children and youth. Alberta employees make a difference globally Now in its third year, the IBM Corporate Service Corps (CSC) program contributes IBM s greatest strength our people to address some of the world s most pressing business and societal issues by allowing employees to visit developing countries to work on shortterm community projects. Since the program s inception, five Alberta employees have participated, travelling to places such as Nigeria, India, Vietnam and Malaysia, with another employee selected to participate by the end of 2011.
Communities IBM, Government of Alberta & First Nations/Métis Partnership: This partnership focuses on Aboriginal participation in the Information Technology industry through employment, education and skill development, business partnerships and investment initiatives, such as IBM IGN.I.T.E (IGNiting Interest in Technology and Engineering) Camps and grant-funded consulting engagements. IGN.I.T.E camps provide Aboriginal youth with a comprehensive, hands-on computer learning experience, opening participants eyes to careers in science and technology. IBM: Helping Alberta Work Better: These are just some of the ways IBM is helping to make Alberta work better. We do it by living our values by partnering with our clients to ensure their success by driving innovation that makes the world work better and by demonstrating trust and personal responsibility in all of our relationships. We do it giving back to the community... by helping our youth get a better start... and by contributing to the economic growth of the region and its people. For more information, please visit This program recognizes youth aged five to 18 who demonstrate considerable effort in school, participate in their community through volunteer...
