2 Graduate program Industrial and Applied Mathematics In its teaching and research the Mathematics group of the department finds inspiration in a variety of fields of high relevance for industry, corporations and government agencies. Example in this sense are network optimization or cryptographic schemes, understanding randomness or supporting the decision-making and optimization, or systems of differential equations modeling environmental or technical problems and related numerical algorithms for large-scale numerical computations. The Mathematics group has a strong reputation in these fields. Its industrial and applied profile and its industrial network are distinctive characteristics. Industrial and Applied Mathematics plays a key role in the development of innovative technologies, e.g., mathematical models, advanced simulations and sophisticated (computer) computations are increasingly being used in new technological developments. Within the Industrial and Applied Mathematics graduate program, the following programs are available: Master s degree program Industrial and Applied Mathematics PDEng program Mathematics for Industry PhD program Industrial and Applied Mathematics Master s degree program Industrial and Applied Mathematics This master s degree program is an excellent start in your formation as a scientist tackling current and future technological needs of society. You can choose between the three tracks of this program: Computational Science and Engineering, emphasizing on mathematical modeling and analysis, and numerical/computational skills for problems emerging in real life, especially in engineering. The modeling, analysis, simulation steps are often followed by assessing the validity of the outcome against the original problem. Discrete Mathematics and Applications represents the mathematics essential in our digital world (think of telecommunication or secure Internet), in scheduling and optimization problems (think of train schedules) and more. Statistics, Probability and Operations Research. Statistics and probability theory study phenomena in which randomness plays a key role. Operations research provides the essential mathematical tools for the analysis of models encountered in decision-making and optimization, and for the design of algorithms for these models. Participation in the program consists of two internships (one day per week), typically in two different areas of expertise of your own choice. It also provides participation in the other activities of these research groups, and in activities of the WONDER research school. The Honors program may create overlap

These machines generate a lot of data, and statistical methods and models can help us find information to detect equipment failure before it arises. Modeling the problem is very interesting - you need imagination and abstract thinking to go from the very detailed information you get from experts to a model that captures the essence of the processes. I chose Industrial and Applied Mathematics because I like solving problems and puzzles. What I most enjoy about studying at TU/e is the interactive environment talking with other students about the things we learn is very important. Mathematics is very broad, and mathematical knowledge is essential in many areas of business. I would like to work in the medical field working with mathematics to solve problems that also help people in the real world. with the PDEng or PhD studies afterwards and so reduce the total length in time of subsequent studies. Participation in the Honors program has further benefits: gaining knowledge at the scientific forefront, an important research experience and working in a motivating environment. It will be formalized by the Honors certificate as an annex to the master s degree. PDEng program Mathematics for Industry (MI) Following your master s graduation, you can continue your graduate study in the Mathematics for Industry PDEng program within the Industrial and Applied Mathematics graduate program. High tech industry and service providers such as banks and government need applied mathematicians that are skilled to design mathematical models for the purpose of development or improvement of products and service processes. Your master s degree reveals your theoretical knowledge and for some experience with applying mathematics in a practical context. During the PDEng program Mathematics for Industry you learn all aspects of the modeling process: communicating with the problem owner, setting up realistic time and project planning, working in a multi-disciplinary team, translating a practical problem into conceptual and mathematical models, identifying the appropriate mathematical problem and retranslating its solution into recommendations that solve the practical problem. The training offered by MI significantly boosts your market value. You will have the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. The MI program offers education to broaden your knowledge and training specific competencies required in the modeling process. The program has a broadening and steering character and integrates both engineering and non-engineering skills in a natural way. So apart from the development of technical skills, development of social and communicative skills, flexibility and independence are regarded as indispensable for a future mathematician in industry. Participants are expected to demonstrate plenty of autonomy. They carry out three short term projects followed by a major in-company design assignment of 8 months. To be admitted in the program candidates have to do an assessment of one full week at the university in the form of a Modeling Week, followed by an application interview.

The institute represents the three universities of technology in the Netherlands and was established in mid PhD program A master s degree or PDEng degree enables you to apply for a PhD position within the Industrial and Applied Mathematics PhD program. During the course of this program you will develop into an independent researcher. This will be overseen by a chair although the daily supervision may be in the hands of another member of that chair. You will write scientific papers, present results at conferences and take part in seminars as well as undertake some teaching. In addition, there are many possibilities to further your development, for instance through courses and training geared to personal development and through additional scientific schooling. TU/e PhD students are employed by the university, which means that you receive a salary during your PhD program. You are also entitled to attractive secondary employment benefits. When you complete your program with a dissertation and gain your doctorate, your career prospects will be good, in both worlds of science and industry. 5 I m helping companies how not to reveal confidential information by accident Sebastiaan de Hoogh PhD student, Master Industrial and Applied Mathematics When I was at school I thought: mathematics is interesting, but what can you do with it? Lots of things, I now know. I graduated in cryptography, which is a good example of applied mathematics. For the purpose of my graduation I researched how you can protect software that people download, using hash functions and cryptographic signatures. This I did at the Macquarie University in Sydney. Because I very much like both the program and student life in Eindhoven, I m now doing a PhD at TU/e. I m part of a European project, in which we re investigating how companies in a supply chain can coordinate their processes and planning without publicly revealing confidential information. That too is a question of data security. Which is why it involves cryptography, a great mix of innovative theory and applied science.
