Pierce, ABOM, NCLC The demographics of the elderly has changed over the years today s seniors are living longer, enjoying active lifestyles, and have more discretionary income than ever before. While they are keeping their bodies younger, they cannot control the changes occurring in their eyes, which greatly affects their functional vision. Today s new lens options are a perfect match for the aging eye we can do much more to enhance their eyesight, given new optical technologies available to us. We will discuss various milestones and tripstones in regard to the visual changes going on during the aging process. In addition, we will discuss common eye conditions prevalent among the elderly and the optical options we can recommend to alleviate some of their visual symptoms. By providing optical solutions to their subjective complaints, we can do a lot to help improve their quality of life. 10:15 11:15 AM KEEPING THE OFFICE IN PERFECT FOCUS Laurie L. Pierce, ABOM, NCLC This course will inform the attendees of the concept, challenges, and the optimum management of Computer Vision Syndrome and the importance of good ergonomics while working in a small visual environment. We will discuss how work environments have changed, causing us to need new optical solutions. At the conclusion of this course, all attendees will be educated on the lens options available and the correct fitting procedures. 11:30 12:30 PM YOUNGER OPTICS, CAMBER TECHNOLOGY: THE NEXT GENERATION OF DIGITAL PROGRESSIVE LENSES

4 Herb Fletcher Camber lenses were designed to address some of the optical design issues that have arisen in the age of digital progressive lenses. The patented variable base curve of the lens blank, when combined with complex curves on the back of the lens, offers better optics, cosmetics, and improved near and distance zones. 12:30 1:30 PM LUNCH 1:30 2:30 PM AIDS & THE EYE By now, over 40,000,000 people worldwide will have been infected with AIDS/HIV, including 1,200,000 North Americans who are currently living with the disease. This course will cover the etiology and transmission of the AIDS/HIV virus; its effects on the structures of the eye; Universal Precautions; OSHA standards; preventing the transmission of AIDS in an eye care practice; and preventing the transmission of AIDS among contact lens patients 2:45 3:45 PM SILICON HYDROGELS: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE This course will cover the advantages of silicone hydrogels for daily and continuous wear, lens selection (emphasizing the importance of compliance with disposability or frequent replacement schedules), selection of care products that are safe to use with silicone hydrogel materials, pearls for achieving continuous wear success, causes of continuous wear problems, wearing schedules, and followup care. 4:00 5:00 PM THE AGING EYE: BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GERIATRIC CARE The average life expectancy in the United States has increased from 47 years in 1900 to over 76 years today. Between 2010 and 2030, aging baby boomers are expected to swell the older population in the U.S. by 75%, from 40 million to 70 million, while the population under age 65 will increase by only 6.5%. This lecture will provide an overview of geriatric eye care, touching on the causes, clinical features, and management of the most common or important eye conditions and discuss how these conditions affect acuity and comfort with contact lenses as well as the visual expectations of patients toward their new spectacle correction. 6 SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES HERBERT FLETCHER Fletcher has been the Retail Sales Consultant for Younger Optics for the last 11 years. In this capacity he has covered 13 states from Maine to Michigan to Delaware. Herb is a graduate of Middlesex Community College in CT with an Associates of Science in Ophthalmic Design & Dispensing and participated in a fellowship program at Yale University s Contact Lens Clinic. In addition Herb holds an Associate s Degree in Computer Science. Herb has been a Licensed Optician in the State of Connecticut for Spectacles and Contact Lenses since1992. Herb has proctored for the State Licensing Exam in CT for over ten years. Herb is an ABO/NCLE Certified Speaker. During his twenty-five Plus years in the optical community he has worked for Independent Opticians, OD s, MD s and regional, and national retail optical chains. Herb enjoys working for Younger Optics because it offers him the opportunity to share information and tools that are geared towards helping to educate opticians and their patients on the importance of Total Vision Care. ALBERTINA (TINA) THOMPSON Thompson is currently a lens consultant with Vision-Ease Lens in NJ/PA/Delaware responsible for training and educating independent ECP s, Multiple locations, and Optician schools in her territory. She has been in the ophthalmic lens business for 30 years since 1983 as a consultant with Essilor & Tri Supreme Lab. Tina is an ABO speaker, and truly enjoys being a part of the ophthalmic lens industry seeing many positive changes over the years. She enjoys gardening, reading, and relaxing at the Jersey shore. LAURIE L. PIERCE, ABOM, NCLC Pierce is an Instructor in the Opticianry program at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida. Laurie is a graduate of Newbury College's opticianry program in Boston, and managed Lugene Opticians, an upscale optical boutique in Boston's Copley Place. Ms. Pierce lectures extensively on optical theory and management topics at local, regional and national optical conferences. Ms. Pierce is an ABO Master Optician and is certified by the National Contact Lens Examiners. She received the National Federation of Opticianry Schools Educator of the Year award in 2003, and was named one of America's Most Influential Women in optical by Vision Monday, In addition, Laurie is an education consultant for Shamir Insight. 7 PHYLLIS RAKOW, COMT, NCLE-AC, FCLSA Rakow is Director of Contact Lens Services for The Princeton eye group, a multispecialty eye care practice with three offices in central New Jersey. She is a JCAHPO-certified ophthalmic medical Technologist, an NCLE Advanced-Level Contact Lens Technician, and an honored fellow of the Contact Lens Society of America. She has lectured throughout the United States and Canada, writes for numerous trade and professional publications, served a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Contact Lens Society of America, is serving her third term on and is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Contact Lens Examiners. She also serves on the GPLI Advisory Committee and has authored a chapter, Art and the eye, that was published in the 8th and 9th editions of The Ophthalmic Assistant. KAREN STOTZ, ABOC, NCLE Stotz is an Educational Lab Coordinator at Shamir Insights, Inc. Karen has 37 years in all aspects of the Optical Industry, 12 of those years managing Ophthalmic and Optometry Dispensaries. Karen is a member of the Optical Women s Association & in 2014 she was named one of Vision Mondays Most Influential Women in Optical. She was a key contributor in developing Pech Optical s Internal Education Program, Pech External Education Curriculum and the development of Pech Optical s Quality Assurance Department. Karen has also developed training for the National Sales Meeting for Frame Manufacturers: Silhouette/Adidas, Rudy Project, Nouvea.
