3 Europe Direct EUROPE DIRECT information relays EUROPE DIRECT information relays act as an interface between citizens and the Union at local level. The mission of the network is to: enable local citizens to obtain information, advice, assistance and answers to questions about the European Union s institutions, legislation, policies, programmes and funding opportunities; actively promote local and regional debate about the European Union and its policies; allow the European institutions to improve the dissemination of information tailored to local and regional needs; give the public the opportunity to send feedback to the European Union institutions in the form of questions, opinions and suggestions. 3

10 General Information General information on the European Union is within easy reach through an extensive network of information centres and contact points set up by the Union for the public. You can get in touch with: EUROPE DIRECT Information Network relays 3 National Information centres in Paris, Lisbon and Rome, set up in cooperation with the national authorities Students can also obtain special access to more than 600 European Documentation Centres at universities and research institutes in member states and other countries Team Europe is a network of independent conference speakers specialised in European affairs coming from a variety of backgrounds and chosen by the European Commission Representations in the Member States For more details on these services, or to find the address of the information centre closest to you, click on one of the headings on the left. 11 European Doc Centers European Documentation Centres "Information about the Community at universities and research institutes" Helping universities and research institutes to promote and develop education and research on European integration, encouraging them to take part in the debate on Europe and to do what they can to make Europe more transparent by helping ordinary citizens to learn about the Union's policies: these are the main aims of the network of European Documentation Centres (EDCs). The first EDCs were set up in 1963 and today there are 600 centres altogether across the world, mostly in universities, research centres and national libraries, with 366 of them in the Member States. You can consult any of the European Communities'official publications at any EDC. 11

12 National Info Centers National Information Centres On Europe "A permanent site for detailed information" Informing citizens, answering requests for information from specialist audiences, creating a permanent centre for contacts, training, and promotion about Europe: these are the aims of the major European information centres. They provide support for the local information centres, offering background documentation on the entire range of EU activities and serving as major centres for information and events aimed at tens of thousands of visitors every year. At present there are three such centres: in Paris, Lisbon and Rome. These national information centres are located in the national capitals. They have been set up in a joint initiative between the Commission and national governments, with the possible participation of other public or private bodies. The Paris centre is open to the public under the name "Sources d'europe". In Portugal, the "J. Delors European Information Centre" is housed in the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. In Rome the national information and documentation centre on Europe is currently housed at the premises of the Commission Representation and the European Parliament Office in the Via IV novembre. 12
