5 Chapter 5 Overseas purchasing and exchange rate issues By the end of this chapter, you will have learned about issues with exchange rates how to find currency sites what is involved in purchasing from overseas

6 Chapter 5 Foreign exchange rates When buying from websites based outside Australia, foreign exchange rates have to be considered because they will affect whether the item you are buying is a bargain or extraordinarily expensive. There will be a good time to buy and a bad time to buy depending on the relative strength of the Australian dollar compared to the currency in which you buy. Foreign exchange rates change because currency is like all commodities - when it is popular, the price goes up; when it isn't, the price goes down. The influences on just how much you get for your money are wide-ranging and unpredictable. Finding currency conversion sites Type Currency Conversion in a search engine such as Google; you will get a selection of currency conversion sites, one of which should be: Click on the link to take you to This is a complex site. If you want to, have a browse through the different sections to get a feel for just how many issues there are related to currency conversion. When you have finished, under the heading, you will see a link, which is a link to an automatic currency converter (as you will see if you run your cursor over the link). 7 Overseas purchasing and exchange rate issues To use this site, we will use the English language and today s date. In the box, type 100. From the first list of currencies (in the box on the left), click on the arrow, and find and click on Australian Dollar. AUD: In the right hand box, select US Dollar. USD: E-commerce Ann Howard 49

Try converting 50 Euros into Nepalese Rupees. How many Nepalese Rupees did you get? Purchasing from overseas An example of a purchase and currency conversion from a global site Type British Museum into your favourite search engine to find the British Museum s website. On the au.yahoo.com search engine, the first hit in the list was the site we are looking for: Click on the link to go to the British Museum site.
