12 Six Common Myths Abot College Majors & Careers Developed by the Liberal Arts Connection (An Association of Bay Area University Career Conselors) Myth # 1: There is a qick and easy method for choosing a major or career. False! There is no qick answer and there is no ltimate test that will tell yo what yo shold do. Choosing a major or career takes time, energy and research. A good decision takes into consideration yor personality traits, interests, vales, skills, family and cltral vales and other important factors. Career planning corses sch as CLP 70 or CLP 75 can help yo assess yor strengths in these areas. Myth # 2: Choosing a major is the same thing as choosing a career. False! Most majors at the bachelor s degree level do not have a direct link to jst one single career, bt are designed to provide yo with many flexible career options. This is tre, becase most majors help yo develop what employers and edcators refer to as transferable skills. These inclde: good verbal and written commnication, ability to work on teams, critical thinking and problem solving skills, basic compter knowledge, mlticltral skills, etc. A college edcation (no matter what yor major) helps to develop these attribtes. Employers seek people with these valable skills. Note: There are some career fields that reqire a great deal of technical expertise. If yo plan to prse a career in one of these fields, yo shold definitely choose a major related to that career. Registered Nrsing, Compter Science and Electrical Engineering are good examples. Myth # 3: Market demand shold determine yor major and career choice. False! Market demand moves in cycles. Careers can be in high demand one day and then low in demand the next. Job otlook predictions can and do sometimes fail to come tre. Yor individal vales and interests shold be the motivating force behind yor choice of major or career. Do something yo wold enjoy! Meaningfl work (work that yo trly care abot) begins with self-knowledge not labor market statistics. Myth # 4: Yor first career will probably be yor one and only career. False! Yo not only can, yo probably will change yor career path several times. The Brea of Labor Statistics reports that the average person will change careers five to six times in their lifetime. This is now the norm. Myth # 5: Corsework in yor major is the main factor in career sccess. False! Scceeding in yor corse work is indeed very important, bt yo shold know that smmer jobs, internships, volnteer placements, athletics, stdent politics and civic activities are significant factors in employer selection of job seekers. Myth # 6: Gradate Schools reqire specific ndergradate majors. False! Many gradate/professional schools reqire certain prereqisites (corses), bt specific majors are not always reqired. Each school will have their own niqe reqirements for admission. Medical school applicants mst complete science and math corse reqirements (pre-med path) and generally choose a standard science major sch as biology, chemistry, physiology, etc. 10
