2 HALLMARKS OF OUR PROGRAM The Higher Education program prepares professionals to provide innovative leadership in careers across multiple sectors of higher education. Our two-year master s program prepares students to pursue careers in advanced leadership positions. Our doctoral program prepares students for senior-level administrative positions and academic careers. 3 INNOVATIVE CAREER TRACKS Innovative career tracks prepare professionals for growing fields in higher education. The Higher Education program offers graduate degrees that prepare students seeking advanced leadership positions in colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations, or educational associations related to postsecondary/tertiary education. International Leadership Athletics Administration Educational Assessment Student Affairs Administration Community College Leadership Leadership & Administration College Transition Programs MS.Ed. 2-Year 36 credits Ed.S. 2-Year 30+ credits Ph.D. 4-Year 60+ credits The MS.Ed. has tracks in student affairs administration, international higher education leadership, and leadership and administration. The Ed.S. lets students develop a personalized plan of study based on the applicant's background and professional interests. The Ph.D. includes focuses in policy, international leadership, student affairs, assessment, college transition, and athletics. Visit for more information.

4 DIVERSITY We are a diverse community of students, professionals, and scholars. ODU is part of the cultural and commercial crossroads of Hampton Roads, and one of the most diverse institutions in Virginia. Students come with a rich mix of professional, cultural, and life experiences from many sectors of higher education, business, industry, social services, and other professional domains. Classes are scheduled in the evening. 4

5 FIELD EXPERIENCES Our program emphasizes real-world learning opportunities for students to create and apply knowledge in practice. Internships Capstone Projects Study Abroad Real-World Class Projects Graduate Assistantships Students gain professional experience through internships with a wide-variety of colleges, universities, agencies, and associations in the U.S. and abroad. A capstone experience engages students in real-life research projects that are commissioned by university and community leaders. Each year students have an opportunity to study abroad. Students in the Comparative Higher Education Systems course have studied in China, Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Most students in our program are employed in graduate assistantships. All applicants, both U.S. and international, will be considered for graduate assistantships. 5

Our 10:1 faculty-student ratio allows students to create stimulating, imaginative, and personalized curricular plans suited to their personal and professional goals. 6

HIGHER EDUCATION) The International Higher Education Leadership track prepares professionals for positions in international education, including study abroad, international student and scholar services, international campus programming, and higher education for international development. 10 STUDENT AFFAIRS TRACK (MS.ED. HIGHER EDUCATION) The Student Affairs Leadership track prepares professionals for positions in student affairs, including academic advising, admissions, campus activities, greek life, judicial affairs, multicultural affairs, orientation, and residence life and housing. 11 EDUCATION SPECIALIST (ED.S.) The Education Specialist (Ed.S.) program lets students develop a personalized plan of study based on the applicant's background and professional interests. Students who aspire to advance in higher education administration will find in the Ed.S. program a meaningful base for building toward their professional objectives. Content- Focus Courses 18 credits Research Courses 18 credits Field Experience 3 credits Students, with the assistance of their advisor, will choose six courses that do not repeat courses taken for the master s degree. Students take courses in program evaluation, advanced research design, and applied statistics and data analysis. Students complete a 200-hour internship or enroll in Comparative Higher Education Systems, a study abroad experience which examines the development of higher education systems around the world. 12 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D.) IN HIGHER EDUCATION The Ph.D. in higher education is intended to prepare individuals for administrative and faculty positions; and to provide these students with the skills to carry out scholarly research, lead organizations, and create new knowledge. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program includes focuses in policy, international leadership, student affairs, assessment, college transition, and athletics. CORE COGNATE RESEARCH Proseminar in Higher Education Contemporary Issues in Higher Education Higher Education Policy History of Higher Education in the United States Multicultural University Higher Education Finance & Planning Doctoral students have diverse backgrounds, experiences, and goals. Students, in consultation with their advisor, tailor cognate courses to meet those goals, and select (4) four courses from any specialized area, including international leadership, policy, assessment, athletics, college transition, and student affairs. Advanced Program Evaluation and Assessment Applied Linear Models or ANOVA Advanced Research Design and Analysis Qualitative Research Plus (1) additional advanced research course Dissertation Seminar Visit for more information.
