1 New York University Department of Administration, Leadership, and Technology Doctor of Philosophy Program in Higher and Postsecondary Education The Ph.D. program in higher education and postsecondary education helps students understand the changes that are affecting the meaning and processes of education around the world as well as changing conceptions of the individual roles of those who serve as teachers, researchers and administrators in community colleges, colleges and universities, higher education agencies and other postsecondary settings. The program has been designed to offer an integrated experience that helps students see each aspect in relation to their final objectives. Students enroll in a foundational Colloquium and integrating Proseminar during their first two semesters in which they are introduced to higher education literature, scholarly inquiry, and assisted with strategic planning to help them make the best use of available time and other resources. The Proseminar also introduces them to the candidacy process through which they will demonstrate their research and writing skills, as a prerequisite to admission to candidacy, by writing a review of the literature on an approved researchable topic. The Ph.D. requires 60 points beyond the master's degree, including 18 to 24 points of higher and postsecondary education specialization, 18 points of research skills, 12 hours of specialized electives (foundation and cognate) cognate and the dissertation. Full-time students generally complete the degree in three to five years. Completion for part-time students depends upon the time they are able to devote to their study. Upon recommendation of the initial advisor, up to six points of elective credit may be waived for students who have completed a master s degree during the past ten years that includes courses listed in the required or elective categories of the specialization or for students who have completed a master s degree in a cognate applicable to the study of higher and postsecondary education. A maximum of 12 hours may be waived for students who have completed two masters degrees (one of which must be in higher education and the other in a relevant cognate field) or for students with a relevant two-year masters degree in a field such as public administration. The decision on any waiver of required points is recorded on the matriculation form. The program described in the following pages was approved by the faculty in Fall Students who began their study prior to the adoption of these modifications in either higher education or business education have the right to graduate under the terms of the guide in existence at the time they matriculated. Faculty will work with returning students to help them make wise course selections within the context of the program described in this document. 1

4 4. Research (18 points) Students should enroll in required research courses as early in their doctoral programs as possible. All students are required to take a two-semester sequence in quantitative research and a twosemester sequence in qualitative research as a foundation for understanding the methodologies of inquiry currently used within the field of postsecondary education. Beyond the foundation, students take at least two additional courses directly related to the focus of their dissertation. One of these must be chosen from the advanced/specialized category and both should selected in consultation with the dissertation advisor. Students who choose the 8 point statistical methods sequence offered by the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service will meet the requirements for 2 points of the specialization as well as 6 points of the foundation. 5 5. Cross-Disciplinary Preparation (6 to 9 points) Cognate Cognate courses are selected in consultation with the advisor. They must be selected from outside the program of specialization and should form a coherent program of study. Students may select elective courses from other schools in the University. Required (3 points) E Organizational Theory I (3 to 6 points). Proposed Term Credits 6. Dissertation Proposal Preparation (3 points) The dissertation proposal seminar is designed to help students complete and defend a dissertation proposal. Before enrolling in this seminar, students should complete foundation research requirements, consult with a prospective dissertation advisor, and complete a critical synthesis of the literature related to the topic on which they intend to focus. E Dissertation Proposal Seminar 7. Notes Total credits must sum to 60 including any credits specifically waived at the time of matriculation. Students should read the New York University/School of Education Bulletin carefully for complete statements of requirements and should review the School of Education Handbook for Graduate Students for further guidelines. Meeting all deadlines is the responsibility of the student. Admission to candidacy must occur by the time a student completes 36 hours of course work. 5
