2 FNN guideline In future, electronic electricity meters will not only measure energy consumption but will also perform other important functions in intelligent power supply systems. The introduction of electronic measuring systems will therefore be promoted intensively over the next years. Electricity meters are used for calculating the quantity of energy consumed or produced, and they represent a big investment for the network operator. The reliability and measuring constancy of these devices is therefore of paramount importance. Classical induction motor electricity meters are characterized by their measuring constancy, even over decades. With electronic meters, the large number of different components means that the evaluation of the measuring constancy is a special challenge. In March 2011, the project group Reliability and measuring constancy of electricity meters and additional equipment in the Network Technology / Network Operation forum in the VDE (FNN) published the Guideline for the evaluation of the reliability of electricity meters and additional equipment. The guideline supplements the normative requirements and calls for higher standards of reliability and quality in energy meters during mains operation.

3 Proof of product quality thanks to VDE test reports VDE Testing and Certification Institute has been instrumental in the establishment of the guideline through examinations and tests, in particular in the field of the interference of high frequency currents in the frequency range of 2 khz to 150 khz. Thanks to this active involvement in the FNN, VDE Institute can now offer testing for electricity meters and accessories in accordance with the standards of the guideline. Hence, the manufacturers of these devices can actively approach their customers and, with the help of the VDE test report, provide proof that high product quality standards have been met.
