1 Chicanas & Chicanos in the School Spring 2015: Tuesdays (5-7pm): March 31- May 19, 2015 Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership at Kalamazoo College Instructor: Dr. Lucy Guevara- Vélez COURSE DESCRIPTION In the United States, Chicana/o students usually attend racially segregated and underfunded schools. Rather than building upon the community cultural wealth that Chicana/o students bring to school, educators often engage in practices of deficit thinking. Furthermore, structural inequities along the K- 16 pipeline are reinforced by a standardized curriculum and high- stakes testing, which in many cases, prescribe and limit the path into higher education. This course will examine the historical and current relationship between the public education system and the Chicano community in this country. We will work under the framework of Critical Pedagogy in order to deconstruct the master narrative and give power to our own educational journeys. We will begin by examining the K- 16 educational pipeline for Chicana/o students and the Midwest/Michigan context. Furthermore, we will discuss the legal fight for educational equality/ equity to include the Mendez v. Westminster case (1947), the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, and contemporary educational policy. This course will also examine issues that impact Chicanos as they try to access, navigate, persist, and succeed in higher education. We will end our discussion by highlighting the theoretical contributions made by Chicana/o scholars in order to ensure an asset- based public education for all children. Participants will leave this course with the historical context and language to better understand and address contemporary problems in the education of Chicano youth with the goal that they too can question/ contest inequity within our public school system.
