1 Using the Minnesota DNR Public GDRS to Create a Stand Alone GDRS Hal Watson Minnesota DNR Spatial DBA Current: 03/12/2012 Background The Minnesota DNR maintains a publicly accessible Geospatial Data Resource Site that can be used as a source for downloading data and applications, setting up a personal GDRS, and using QuickLayers for ArcMap 10. This resource is located on a web accessible folder (WebDAV server). Currently the site is in the BETA testing stage. Requirements This document asssumes you have: a copy of the DNR s GDRS Manager for Windows application (gdrsmanager.exe). This simple application can be run without need for any installation routine. The app can be downloaded from the DNR s public web site here: ftp://ftp.dnr.state.mn.us/pub/gisftp/gdrs/ Internet access Windows 7 (or Windows Server 2008) Also available at the ftp site is this document and a batch file you can use to map a drive to the web GDRS folder. Connection Instructions for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008: First: Make sure your Internet Explorer LAN settings are not set to Auto Detect : 1. Open Internet Explorer on client machine 2. Select Tools menu 3. Select Internet Options 4. Select Connections Tab 5. Press LAN Settings button (bottom section of form) 6. Make sure Automatically detect settings is NOT checked. If it is, un-check it. 7. Press OK to save.

2 Second: Edit your Windows Registry to allow files up to 4 Gigabytes in size to be downloaded. Run regedit.exe and make this change. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters 1. Right click on the FileSizeLimitInBytes and click Modify 2. Click on Base = Decimal 3. In the Value data box, type and then click OK. Note this sets the maximum you can download from the Webdav to 4 gig at one time. I m not sure that is possible. Now re-boot your computer. You are now set up so that you should be able to connect to the DNR s Web Accessible Folder You can use the batch file map_mndnr_public_gdrs.bat (edit it to set the drive letter to whatever you like) Open a Command Window and run the following command. Assuming V: drive is available: net use v: /user:2k8gdrs\gdrsclient Passw0rd! /persistent:no Or you can map a drive per normal method. Set drive to: V: Set folder to:

3 User Name is: 2k8gdrs\gdrsclient Password is: Passw0rd! Result should look like this: Run GDRS Manager You should have downloaded gdrsmanager.exe to your desktop or a folder on your computer. Run it now. This application will be used to select data and applications to be copied from a Source GDRS (on DNR s server) to a Destination GDRS (on your local computer). If you are using Windows 7 per instructions above, set the Source GDRS to: V:\GDRS

4 Then set your Destination GDRS to a local hard drive where you have plenty of space: Next, on the left-hand pane, select the data you wish to have on your Destination GDRS. Use the green arrow to add it to your Destination GDRS. You can click on the column headers to sort the list. Do the same for Applications. Be SURE to select "GDRS Manager", "QuickLayers" and "LandView Where Window": You will also see at the bottom right how much available space you have, how much space the GDRS you are building will take, and if this was an update, how much data would be transferred for the update. Press the Run Complete Update button:

5 Confirm the Build Summary (press OK) Wait while the build runs, then you will have a chance to review the log file: At this point you are finished, you can exit the GDRS Manager application, and disconnect the V: drive from your computer. Post GDRS Installation: Adding QuickLayers and LandView to your ArcGIS 10 Setup Assuming you have a GDRS on a local or networked hard drive... (Call it D:\gdrs for these examples ) Open ArcMap 10. Select from menu: Customze > Add-In Manager > Options Tab

6 Click on the Add Folder button Browse to: D:\gdrs\apps\pub\us_mn_state_dnr\QuickLayers Then press OK

7 Do the same for: D:\gdrs\apps\pub\us_mn_state_dnr\LandView Now when you look at the Add-Ins Tab, you should see something like this: Press the Close Button. Next, add the QuickLayers Toolbar to your ArcMap Interface: From the ArcMap Menus, select: Customize > Toolbars > DNR QuickLayers 10 The QuickLayers Toolbar Looks Like this: Free floating:

8 Docked (on its own line): Start Quicklayers by pressing the red + symbol: This is the QuickLayers Interface. Next job is to set your GDRS Location. From the Menu choose: Set your prioirity 1 path to the GDRS you have access to. For now don t set a secondary GDRS location.

9 Press OK You should now have a couple more options under the Topic Categories button. Choose: MnDNR Custom
