The competitive conditions in 2005 prevented most competitors from growing their employers' liability book and this was no less true for the top 10. While three of the top 10 increased market share, only two competitors did so as the result of increases in premium income. Due to the varied and shifting needs of commercial insurance clients, independent intermediaries have long been the dominant force in distribution, accounting for around 83 per cent of premium income.
