1 Center for East Asian Studies Undergraduate s for Study Abroad in East Asia Administered through the UW-Madison Center for East Asian Studies (For more, see Ichiro & Toyoko Matsudaira Memorial Award Fund Chinese Language s, China Council, People s Republic of China CEAS awards one yearly fellowship covering participation in the Japan-America Student Conference. The JASC is an educational and cultural exchange program for university students (from freshmen to Ph.D. candidates) from the US and Japan. Approximately 40 students from each country spend an intense month living, traveling, and studying together with the aim of better understanding each other's cultures and societies. The locales alternate yearly in the US and Japan. Candidates submit applications directly to JASC, and submit an additional complete copy to the Center for East Asian Studies. CEAS accepts applications for one-year Chinese Cultural s provided by the Government of the People's Republic of China through the China Council. The scholarship covers tuition, instructional materials, housing, and medical care in addition to a monthly stipend for living expenses in China (equivalent to approximately US$100). Successful applicants are responsible for all travel costs. 4 Bridging Project Clearinghouse for Study in Japan Chinese Government Cultural Program for Foreign Students and Scholars in Korean Studies Blakemore - Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Language Study a Japanese university for a period of up to one year. The grant covers air-fare to and from Japan, a monthly stipend [ 80,000 per month (up to 12 months)], and a one-time settling allowance [ 25,000 (upon arrival only)]. Awards are given on the basis of academic merit and financial need. The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. As an important part of the mission of AKS is to cultivate scholars and young leaders who can contribute to the development of Korean studies, the Academy has organized this intensive cultural program for those in Korean Studies. 5 Freeman-Asia Study Abroad Hokkaido International Foundation Kyoto Center for Japanese Studies KCJS and Japan Foundation s Monbukagakusho Program Japanese Studies ability to devote oneself to full-time language study for the duration of the grant, and U.S. citizenship. Freeman-Asia provides scholarships to undergraduate students to study abroad in East Asia, with a sliding scale, based on student s financial needs. Awards range from $3,000 to $7,000. Awards are only available to students who plan to study in: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam The summer Japanese Language and Culture Program focuses on proficiency-oriented instruction, which endeavors to help students acquire or improve communication skills in all aspects of Japanese. The foundation awards five $1,000 scholarships for the program. Between students with a wide range of majors in the humanities, social sciences, sciences and engineering participate in KCJS. KCJS is primarily an academic year program with the majority of the students participating for both semesters. A limited number of students may be admitted for one semester of study, either fall or spring. At least two years of Japanese language study at the college level (five hours per week minimum), is required to enroll at KCJS in the fall semester. Applicants are required to have at least sophomore standing during their participation in the program; more advanced students and those with strong demonstrated academic performance will normally be given preference. The KCJS Governing Board has allocated funds to create the KCJS Student to benefit participating students who demonstrate the most financial need. These awards vary with need and offer up to $3,500 for recipients attending the full year and $1,500 for recipients attending one semester. This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend a year continuing their study of Japanese language or culture at one of several universities in Japan. Benefits: 142,500 yen per month for the period of the scholarship, transportation to and from Japan, 25,000 yen arrival allowance (subject to change), school fees will be waived, accommodations in foreign student houses, residence halls for foreign students, or private boarding houses depending on the university, partial subvention for medical expenses. Gilman International Fulbright IIE For Undergraduate Research Abroad The Institute of International Education (IIE): Midwest Networkers CIEE offers travel grants to provide assistance to undergraduate students participating in educational programs in nontraditional destinations. Award amounts: $500 for programs in Central America or the Caribbean, $750 for South America, $1,000 for Asia and $1,500 for Africa. These awards are for undergraduate study and research abroad in academic fields and for professional training in the creative and performing arts.
