1 Juan Pablo Rodríguez Argente del Castillo e-portfolio: New Haven, CT Phone: (cell) Phone: (work) EDUCATION, New Haven, CT May 2016 (Expected) Ph.D. Spanish Literature May 2016 Second Language Acquisition Certificate Dissertation: Cazadores letrados: La caza y la prosa cortesana renacentista en Castilla Abstract: My dissertation examines the hunting discourse used in the didactic thought and political prose of Late Medieval and Renaissance Castile. I explore how humanists such as Alonso de Palencia, Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo and Alonso de Cartagena defined new models of educating the nobility, fostering the arts of reading and intellectual debate among the social elites, by using metaphors and terminology related to the art of falconry. I argue that knights and courtiers such as Beltrán de la Cueva and Evangelista de Cortona transformed the prestigious medieval falconry textual tradition, shaping the interaction between physical and intellectual hunting as a frequent literary topic in many sixteenth century Spanish works.
