This growing market for video conferencing is enabled by improvements in both fixed and mobile network access. Service providers can now offer higher bandwidth, better quality of service (QoS) and more efficient and standardized codecs that facilitate the penetration of video-based communications for both the consumer and the enterprise markets.
2 The HP OpenCall Media Platform 4.1 with audio and video conferencing is an IMS- and convergence-ready software-based media server. This video communications enabler can be easily and quickly integrated with any collaboration, instant communication or instant sharing sessions and services. Unlike the offerings of most of our competitors, the HP video conferencing system is designed to be integrated inside other video services and instant communication solutions. It goes beyond the well-known scheduled video conference and comes as an easy-to-integrate, fully functional building block for system integrators and our current application vendors partners. If you are a service provider, the HP video conferencing system enables you to enrich your current services packages, including: Consumer services: Instant sharing, instant communications or instant messaging, video mail, video portal, call center Enterprise services: Collaboration tools, IP-Centrex, Web-casting, customer care applications Use cases The following use cases illustrate how users benefit from integrated services based on the HP OpenCall Media Platform 4.0 with video conferencing. Use case sample for consumer: Video portal enriched with conferencing Mike is connected to his video portal watching a new movie video clip. He thinks it would be fun to invite Ann and Tony to share it. While watching the clip, Mike selects Ann and Tony from the buddy/group list on his home PC and initiates a video conference with them. Once engaged in the video conference, each of the friends can see the two others on the screens of their mobile phones or PCs. Then Mike pushes the video clip to the conference members, the three friends can watch the movie and exchange comments on this video. Use case sample for the enterprise: Collaboration and workgroup Before going to his customer meeting, Mike wants to review meeting logistics together with John and Ann. Since they are on the move, Mike sets up a video conference with them from his mobile handset. From his group communication menu he selects the group and launches the video conference. During the discussion, Ann tells Mike that they need their boss, Peter, to review the slides before the customer presentation. Mike calls Peter and includes him in the video conference. He then starts to share the presentation and comments on it slide by slide. Slides are seen by all the participants on their own mobile handsets. A device-agnostic user experience, controlling the conference display and attendees With the NETANN access version, the end user, as a chairman, has full control over the video conferencing session through customizable menus and the dial pad (DTMF interaction). In terms of user experience, the system provides the chairman with a similar interface, no matter if she or he uses a PC with a soft SIP-phone over a broadband connection or a 3G mobile handset. Below are display features that can be changed through one click on the dial-pad: Layout mosaic, active speaker driven, full screen (one quadrant), automatic Mute/un-mute chairman or participants Content sharing and selection 2
3 NETANN and MSCML allow users to customize audio messages prior to and during the conference sessions. Examples of messages follow: Welcome Message A participant joined the conference A participant left the conference End of conference warning The service provider perspective For the enterprise market, HP design and architecture (application server/media server) ease the solution integration work for the audio and video conference server together with collaboration tools. In this market, the video conferencing solution provides a better user experience and helps your companies cut travel costs and improve the productivity of workgroups. For the consumer market and business models with content providers, it is possible to insert a logo in the video stream. In addition, the video conferencing solution supports text insertion and document sharing through the video with full screen mode. The management of the SoftDSP conference engines (see Figure 1) is centralized and uses a common interface already in use for other media processing resources, like automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) farms. The Operation, Administration and Management (OAM) interface also allows shut-down/ restart of units for software updates and increase of capacity. HP OpenCall Media Platform allows you to monitor the usage of the resources. Statistics can then be used and injected into your capacity management tools. Service availability and scalability is made possible with the clustering of SoftDSP conference engines. HP OpenCall Media Platform provides the needed call data record (CDR) information to be used in a billing system. This includes start and stop time of conference, when participants get in/get out, use of the content sharing function and the codecs type. The independent software vendor (ISV) and HP partner perspective If you are a current or future HP application partner, you can benefit from the HP OCMP audio and video conferencing features and high-level interface (conference policy and NETANN protocol or MSCML, pre-defined and customizable VoiceXML files). These features help you cost-effectively integrate your applications. For fast integration, HP recommends using the NETANN protocol and the conference policy, which also bring a set of pre-defined menus that help the chairman control the conference sessions. Instant and scheduled video (or audio) conferences can enrich current instant communication, the video portal, and collaboration tools. For more differentiation, and more sophisticated applications and menus, HP recommends the usage of MSCML. This protocol provides more control to the service running on the application server. MSCML (with some HP extensions) provides the following features and controls. It can: Define and control all menus and DTMFs Help in text insertion/menu insertion (to all or one) 3
