2 These three words summarize the core values of the St. Clair County Library System. ALLISON ARNOLD LIBRARY DIRECTOR Connections. Since 1917, the St. Clair County Library System has been connecting you to a world of information. In the midst of a rapidly changing world, one thing remains the same - your library s dedication to keeping you informed, educated and entertained. Through books, databases, programs, computer classes, music, the library website, reference resources, social media and dedicated staff, we serve as a central part of the community. Growth. The St. Clair County Library is a pioneer among libraries, as it was the first county library service in the state of Michigan. Your library system has come a long way in its 96 years. From card catalogs to online catalogs and from books to ebooks, your library brings you new technologies while still keeping many of the traditional services you have grown to love. This has been achieved over the years through expanded hours, public access computers, Wi-Fi, building renovations and additions, increased services, partnerships within the community, literacy and the establishment of Friends groups in every library branch. Progress. The St. Clair County Library System has continued to weather difficult economic times by being fiscally responsible with your hard-earned tax dollars. Through long-range planning, your library has developed goals to bring you the services and innovations that will keep us moving forward. Even though the role of libraries continues to change, the St. Clair County Library System is committed to keeping you connected to a world of information now and into the future. If you haven t been to one of our 11 branches lately, please stop in - you will be pleasantly surprised at what you find! Sincerely, Library Director
3 Outstanding Customer Service We offer quality service to all customers by displaying a positive attitude, valuing the diversity of people and perspectives. We expect competence and integrity in our personal and professional actions. We aspire to earn the trust and confidence of all customers. Equal Accessibility For All We are committed to connecting our customers to the ideas, information and materials they wish to explore, in a friendly, nonjudgmental manner. We offer materials, programs and services to meet the needs of our diverse population. Reliable Information The Library values access to reliable information as a right of all St. Clair County residents. Fiscal Responsibility We are accountable for ensuring the proper use of public funds. We take seriously our responsibility to maximize the efficiency of staff time and talent, making the best use of all of our resources in the delivery of quality library service. Responsiveness To Our Communities We respond to present situations and anticipate future needs. Respect For The Individual The Library values diversity. This is reflected in its openness, respect and appreciation for our collections, staff and patrons. A Well-Trained Staff The Library is committed to supporting the efforts of staff to achieve their highest potential for service and innovation. Teamwork And Partnerships The Library believes in collaboration and teamwork, as a staff and with other community organizations. Welcoming Physical And Virtual Environments The Library values the creation of hospitable physical and virtual environments for study, teaching and research. Connecting You to a World of Information Serve as a network of vital community centers that provide resources to educate, inform and entertain. LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Arnold H. Larson Kathleen J. The materials loaned include: large print books, audiobooks, Braille, and descriptive videos. LBPH will celebrate its 35th anniversary on July In April 2012, the St. Clair County Library System began offering electronic books through its Overdrive service. Overdrive Titles added in 2012: ebook titles: 1,348 eaudio titles: 445 These titles were checked out 14,835 times. 124 public computers were replaced in St Clair County patrons logged 207,137 hours on the computers throughout the year. Circulation Stats: Books 546,989 Magazines 49,046 Books On CD 70,002 DVDs 142,301 Music CDs 58, Collection Size 399,539 18,154 13,218 39,008 22,444 Our 12th location is our ebranch available 24/7 on the web. Studies show students who take part in their local library s summer reading program significantly improve their reading skills. Your library databases cover everything from ancient history to modern medicine. Many of them offer access to full-text articles from scholarly and professional journals, all free of charge, and most are available from your home. Databases provide dictionaries, encyclopedias, genealogy, business directories, college catalogs, sample tests, language learning, investment guides, newspapers, automotive repair, consumer reports, and much more!
5 Over 300 computer classes were offered throughout the library system in Free wireless Internet access is available at all 11 locations. And over 30,000 people attended library programs for various ages. Through the Westlaw database, materials required to be carried by County Law Libraries are available at each of our 11 locations. Our Westlaw database usage increased by 50% from 2011 to In 2009, legal research materials formerly housed in the county court building were incorporated into the library system and we have served as the Law Library since that time. Did you know? Over 600 people come through the doors at the Main Library on a typical Monday. I am so thankful for the great library system we have here in St. Clair County. I use the library weekly for research materials, movie rentals, periodicals and books for me and my grandchildren. A big treat is being able to order bestsellers that I would never be able to afford in these tough economic times. Also, the staff is so courteous and helpful, that it is always a positive experience to visit. - Kathy Swainson 9 of our 11 locations have meeting rooms for public use. St. Clair County Library System participates in statewide programs to better serve our communities: MeLCat MeL.org Michigan Activity Pass MI Big Green Gym Connect Michigan Your library is a part of MeLCat, a statewide resource-sharing project that enables you to borrow books from other participating Michigan libraries, and it s free! SCCLS joined MeLCat in 2009, and since that time the number of patrons using this service has soared. In 2012 we borrowed 8,944 books for our patrons, and loaned 10,079 of our books to patrons of other MeLCat libraries.
