1 Library Student Survey 2011 Last updated 4/09/2012 In the summer and fall of 2011, Lane Community College Library conducted a comprehensive student survey covering demographics, library use, library space, collection development, instructional services, and library service. Students who participated in the survey were invited to enter a drawing to win a Barnes and Noble Nook Reader. On July 21, 2011, the survey was launched online using the campus portal system, MyLane (Sungard Luminis). The survey was also available in paper form in the Library. The survey ran for two weeks, and in that time only 19 students completed the survey from MyLane. Because we were not satisfied with the online participation rate or the survey tool, a decision was made to re-launch the survey in fall term using the online survey tool Qualtrics. The limitations of the MyLane survey tool made it impossible to transfer the online results to Qualtrics, but the results from the paper survey were transferred. Students who took the survey during summer term either through MyLane or paper were entered into the drawing for the Nook. The survey re-launched on November 2, 2011 using Qualtrics. A link to the survey was available in MyLane and on the Library s website. The survey ran for one month. This time 651 individuals completed the online survey. The 79 paper surveys that were collected summer and fall terms were entered into Qualtrics for a total of 730 survey participants reflected in this report. Student Summary: Approximately 35% of the surveys were completed on campus while 65% were completed offcampus. 38% were first year students, 31% second year students, and 26% have been at Lane more than two years. Approximately 45% were under 30 years old, and 55% 30 and over. 50% of students have attended at least one library instruction session. Table of contents: Survey results page 2-17 Survey instrument page Library Director Marika Pineda and Library Assistant Kristin Gustafson-Chin present the Nook Reader to the winner of the drawing. 1

If I have to sit down and read a lot, I prefer print quite a bit; Online - my preference; Whatever my assignment requires; Depends on need/time; Availability; All research media is valuable; For school I prefer online; personal - prefer print; It s easier to print materials on line rather than from a book on a copy machine; Mostly online but certain subjects like coaching a sport or DIY/hands on type of things I prefer in print; I like old-school books for the tactile and visual dimensions (esp.art/photography) but appreciate expediency of on-line books also hold the energy inspiration of previous readers (helpful & enriching) which computers don't (unless it's expletives); I appreciate the massive variety of an online database, yet I love the deeper connection (and more effective learning) I gain by reading a print version of materials; On how much I need to learn; I appreciate the massive variety of an online database, yet I love the deeper connection (and more effective learning) I gain by reading a print version of materials; If no distractions at home then online. sometimes the library and looking up things in print keep me focused; On where I am at and the book; If it s something I'd like to look over again and again then in print. but if I'm fixing or need a little more information then I like online; How long the material is if it is short then online is fine but if it is long I prefer it in print; It depends on the quality of the information available; Sometimes it is required for classes to use actual books and not online sources, this also gives a better variety of sources since many of the sources online could be subject to corporate manipulation 8

9 of their company coming up first in Google; When doing general research, I like to have the internet because it opens a lot of possibilities of what I can research, but when I have my topic down and if there is a print resource I can use that will be specific to my topic, I will prefer to use that; Online but would not like to give up print!!; Personal projects more print. 9.
