NUVision Media Library and Upload Service NUVision provides an easy method of streaming your media files within the VLE and from web sites. The system converts files that you upload, converting them to MP4 files that are of a suitable size and format to stream over the web. It also generates embed code that you can use to publish files in web pages. NUVision can only be used by University staff. NUVision Overview... 2 Uploading Media... 4 Publishing Videos... 9 Working with the Media Library Appendix 1: Adjusting the Embed Code (Advanced) Appendix 2: Dealing with Encoding Failures Appendix 3: Useful Programs Appendix 4: Permitted File Types and their Codecs Appendix 5 Predefined Categories NUVision User Guide V2.6 1 July 2013
NUVision Overview NUVision provides a simple method of uploading and streaming existing video content. The main benefits are: Files are held on university file store Media files are converted to standard formats that can be played on most devices Files are streamed from the server they do not have to be downloaded Once files are uploaded and converted they can be made accessible to users by adding embed code to web pages and Blackboard items. The content is viewed in an embedded player. Uploaded files are placed into categories in an associated Media Library. Staff can view and search for content in their own categories. A wide variety of file types can be uploaded (Appendix 4), once uploaded they are converted into mp4 files. Up to 3 different qualities of mp4s are created to handle playback on mobile, standard playback and high definition. At present the system cannot handle videos that have been created without a soundtrack. Students only have access to a small number of Public categories. NUVision User Guide V2.6 2 July 2013
Accessing NUVision All Staff are automatically registered to use NUVision. When you log in you will have access to an All Staff video category along with any categories created for your school/service or institute. Please contact if you require access to a specific NUVision video category, or if you require a new shared video category for a specific project. A list of current NUVision categories is provided in Appendix 5 The Media Library and Upload Sites The NUVision Media Library is published at The Media Library pages and upload areas have a different address, but it is easy to move between them using the menu links. From the Upload Site click From the Library click Media Library Upload Site NUVision User Guide V2.6 3 July 2013
Uploading Media Login to NUVision Enter your campus-id and password Click Upload File Details The Title and description will help with searches. On the Details page enter basic information about your media file: Tags can also be added to support searching NUVision User Guide V2.6 4 July 2013
Notes: Text entered in the Description field is shown on the media library. Videos added to Blackboard via the Mashup will include this text. You will only be able to add media to categories to which you have access (normally your school/institute/service) The address that you enter will be used to notify you when the video has been encoded. The description and tags are used in media searches. If the clip supports a particular module code we would recommend adding this as a Tag Click Next Choose File On the File pane click Browse to select a file to upload Wait for the file to upload then click Next Note: the file needs to be less than 1000 MB NUVision User Guide V2.6 5 July 2013
Thumbnails Select the thumbnail that you would like to associate with the media and click Next NUVision User Guide V2.6 6 July 2013
Adding Associated Files (optional) On the Assoc files step you can add Captions and associated files. (Associated files can only be viewed easily from the Media Library and therefore have limited relevance.) Caption Formats The media library accepts captions files with the following formats:.smi (SAMI captioning).rt (RealTime).srt (SubRip),.txt.sub (subviewer).xml Click Next Confirm On the Confirm Pane you will see a summary of the settings for your video: NUVision User Guide V2.6 7 July 2013
Click Finish to process the video. You ll then be shown a list of your content with the video you have just added at the top of the list. You ll notice that it will be shown as Encoded = No Once encoding is complete a confirmation is sent to the address supplied during the upload. If there is limited load on the server the encoding may take approximately one hour. However, at busy times please allow up to 24 hours. If you receive a failure message please see Appendix 2. Please ensure that you keep a copy of your uploaded file. We will keep and backup the MP4 files generated as part of the conversion, but will not retain a copy of your original file. NUVision User Guide V2.6 8 July 2013
File Quality The encoding process creates up to 3 versions of uploaded videos. Low (300Kbps resized to 320 pixels wide) The Low quality version is best suited to mobile phones and is used on the mobile version of High (800kbps resized to 640 pixels wide ) The High quality version is the default version used in notifications. HD (1.5 MBps resized to 1280 wide) The HD version is only created if the source video file is of HD quality. Publishing Videos Once your media file is encoded you will be sent an giving you three different versions of embed code. The text will be similar to the text below: Thank you for uploading your video [Example Video] to NUVision. It has been encoded and can also be viewed by users with access to "ISS" in the media library To Publish Your video outside the library: Blackboard ========== Use the NUVision Mashup: - From "Build Content" click "NUVision" - Enter search terms for your video (e.g. from the name, description or tags) - Click "Select" to insert the video. Iframe version <iframe width="640" height="385" src=" d=634&quality=hi&captions=n" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe> JavaScript Version <div id="player615">loading Video Player...</div><script type="text/javascript" src=" 40&height=385&videoId=615&quality=hd&captions=n"></script> NUVision User Guide V July 2013
If the playback area does not match the aspect ratio of the video, the video is resized to fit the available area: Inadequate height: large vertical borders during playback Inadequate width: horizontal borders The playback controls of the player require approximately 25 pixels. Quality of Video Clip Used You can adjust the embed code to choose the quality of video to stream. Look for the quality= keywords in the embed code and change to lo/hi/hd Iframe version (mid quality) <iframe width="640" height="385" src=" d=634&quality=hi&captions=n" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe> JavaScript Version (HD Quality) <div id="player615">loading Video Player...</div><script type="text/javascript" src=" 40&height=385&videoId=615&quality=hd&captions=n"></script> Progressive Download using the Flash Player To support users on slower connections progressive download may be preferable (this option requires flash): <script type='text/javascript' src=' <div id='mediaplayer'>loading the player...</div> <script type="text/javascript"> jwplayer("mediaplayer").setup({ flashplayer: " width: '460', height: '385', wmode: 'transparent', NUVision User Guide V July 2013
file: ' image:' }); </script> Change the embed code to match your requirements: Change the file name to refer to your video (line 11) Replace the thumbnail or delete the line (line 12) Change the dimensions of the player to suit the video (lines 8 and 9) If you are embedding multiple videos on one page change the container reference (lines 3 and 6) Further Information about JWPlayer NUVision User Guide V July 2013
Appendix 2: Dealing with Encoding Failures You will be sent a failure message if your file fails to encode. Known Problems 1. The encoder cannot handle videos that do not have soundtracks 2. If you have persistent errors contact the [email protected] with details of: a. How the video was produced (e.g. camera, phone, screencapture, download) b. Any software involved c. The video name and time of failure (in the message) We will examine the file and advise possible actions to take. If you need to distribute many high quality files please contact IT Service to find out about alternative services: [email protected] NUVision User Guide V July 2013

Categories that are marked as Auto Populated take their staff membership from centrally held employee data. This means that new staff in eg. Biology will automatically have access to the Biology Category. Please contact the IT ServiceDesk ([email protected]) if you need access to specific categories, or if you require a new shared category for you group or project.
