4 BIOGRAPHY UNITED STATES ARMY General David McKiernan Army Retired To Be Commissioned Second Lieutenant United States Air Force: General McKiernan was born in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from the College of William & Mary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1972, commissioned on active duty from the Reserve Officers Training Corps. He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Shippensburg University and an honorary doctorate in public service from the College of William & Mary. His military education includes: the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College. GEN McKiernan held various command and staff positions during his 37-year Army career. From 1988 to 1990 GEN McKiernan served as commander, 1 st Battalion, 35 th Armor (Iron Knights), 1 st Armor Division. In 1992 he served as the 1 st Cavalry Division G3. From 1993 to 1995 GEN McKiernan commanded 1 st Brigade (Iron Horse), 1 st Cavalry Division. In 1996, GEN McKiernan served in the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) as the Deputy Chief of Staff G2/G3, forward deployed in both Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Rheindahlen, Germany. From 1998 to 1999, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff, G3 (Operations), Headquarters United States Army, Europe and Seventh Army during a period of simultaneous operations in Bosnia, Albania, and Kosovo. From , GEN McKiernan commanded the 1 st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. In 2001, he served as the Army G3 (Operations), Headquarters, Department of the Army. From 2002 to 2004, GEN McKiernan commanded Third U.S. Army and U.S. Army Forces Central Command (ARCENT), and became the Coalition Forces Land Component Commander (CFLCC) for U.S. Central Command in preparation for Operation Iraqi Freedom. 5 To Be Commissioned Ensign United States Navy: Bror E. Axelsson Cape May, NJ Aerospace Engineering Surface Warfare In March 2003, General McKiernan commanded all coalition and U.S. conventional ground forces that attacked Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein from power. GEN McKiernan next served as the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Forces Command, the Army's largest major command, from 2004 to He commanded U.S. Army, Europe and 7 th Army from 2005 to 2008, building partner land force capabilities and relationships across Europe and the former Soviet Union. In his final assignment, 2008 to 2009, GEN McKiernan commanded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), a coalition of 42 countries and U.S. Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A). GEN McKiernan retired from active duty in October 2009; however, he still spends time every year training and mentoring Army leaders and units. GEN McKiernan awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (with oak leaf cluster), Army Distinguished Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with two oak leaf clusters), the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), the Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
