2 Executive Summary: Turkish game developers estimate the size of the local market around US$ 200 million and 21.5 million gamers for The local market is heavily dependent on imported games. However, Turkish language option and local content are becoming more essential. A number of international game development companies, especially those of US and Korean origins, have started opening local subsidiaries for marketing, content localization and also development purposes. The local game development industry which started developing in late 1990 s, is still populated by small scale companies. So far, Turkish game developers have produced a number of internationally successful projects. Turkish government is keen on supporting the gaming industry Market Size & Channels The local game developers estimate the size of the local market around US$ 200 million and predict that it will surpass US$ 1 billion threshold within the next five years. On the other hand, Amsterdam based Newzoo predicts that Turkish game market has already attained a turnover of US$ 400 million in In a country of 78 million inhabitants, 30 million people -42% of Turkish householdsmake use of internet and 72% of them play digital games. The overwhelming majority of game fans in Turkey are males between 15 and 22 years of age. Nevertheless, the gender and age plays a less important role in classical types of games. 1 million Turkish households are reported to have a game console (i.e., Sony has 85% market share). Moreover, 17 million Turkish game fans play online games and they spend US$ 40 million on purchasing subscriptions at social networks while boxed PC games are still going strong as they generate 12% of the total revenues in the market (Please see Figure 1 & 2 below for further information on turnover and multiple platform behavior). Newzoo estimates that 1 out of every 5 dollars spent on game purchases in Turkey are captured by MORP (Massive Online Role Playing) games. Recently, a number of international game development companies, especially those of US and Korean origins, have started opening local subsidiaries for marketing, content localization and also development purposes. Among these firms are GamersFirst ( RiotGames ( Peak Games ( and Joy Game ( Most of these firms are active in online games and in particular, MORP games. On the other hand, Aral Games ( is by far the most prominent local distributor boxed games. Generally speaking, the availability of Turkish language option and local content has become paramount for international game developers. Thus, major international game developers such as Sony, EA Games and Activision have offered some of their best-selling games in Turkish language since 2010 including Star Wars: The Old Republic, Football Manager 2012, The Sims 3 Pets and God of War: Ascension. NBA 2K 10. The Sims Source: Local Game Industry & Incentives The local game development industry which started developing in late 1990 s, is still populated by small scale companies. Since then, a number of Turkish game developers have either directly launched or contributed to internationally successful projects such as Tale Worlds Mount & Blade ( Crytek s ( Crysis series and Picnic Hippo Studio s Bucketz ( Some other successful Turkish developers include Ceidot ( 2Gen ( Sobee (partially
4 owned by Turkish Telecom, and SHR ( Technology development zones, especially METU TECH ( and ITU Ari Teknokent ( have so far been successful incubation centers for the gaming branch. It is also worthwhile to note that Turkish universities offer high quality curricula in software engineering and digital design studies. Recently, TUFOD ( has come to life as the sector organization for the gaming industry. TUFOD has announced ambitious plans for the near future such as establishing online clustering platforms for promoting collaboration among small game development firms, building a national Olympic team for digital games and hosting international game events in Turkey. Turkish government has announced its willingness to support the clustering efforts of TUFOD, as well. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is currently working on a special financial assistance program for the internationalization activities of the industry. When enacted, the new subsidy program will cover half of the market entry expenses up to US$ 100 thousand incurred by Turkish game developers active abroad. Opportunities for Dutch Firms Turkish gaming market is rapidly growing in terms of revenue and it is heavily dependent on imports. At the same time, Turkish companies have lately begun to produce internationally successful games. Therefore, Turkey can be an interesting location for the Dutch gaming industry in terms of both sales and development purposes. Turkish government has very recently announced willingness to support the local industry through financial means. The presence of a large Turkish speaking young population in the Western Europe may also create valuable linkages for Dutch firms interested in Turkish gaming market. 1.
