1 COGNITIVE SCIENCE central european university

2 DEPARTMENT OF COGNITIVE SCIENCE Cognitive science is the study of the ways in which information is acquired and used by humans and other living organisms. The field also includes the study of cognitive systems, including artificial intelligence. The CEU Department of Cognitive Science concentrates on social and biological aspects of human cognition: how learning, processing, and sharing information about and with others takes place, and how computational models of human cognition can be realized in the brain. Students and faculty undertake interdisciplinary research drawing on psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, mathematical modeling, linguistics, and the social sciences. The department currently offers one doctoral program. Dora Kampis Country of origin: Hungary I chose to come to CEU because I had been closely following the work of some of the Cognitive Science Department professors who are leading in their field. I really like the multidisciplinarity of the department and CEU in general. It s inspiring and useful to see how similar disciplines are tackling the same questions only in a different manner. We can help each other in a very concrete sense on an everyday basis. I have experienced how fruitful it is to talk to someone from a distinct but related field. It gives you better insight into you own topic.

3 Doctor of Philosophy in Cognitive Science This research-based, interdisciplinary program offers specialization in the fields of social cognition, cognitive development, and formal and biological models of learning. Students may take courses in cognitive psychology, philosophy of mind, cognitive anthropology, and computational modeling. They receive practical research training in methods, experimental design, and data analysis in the laboratories of departmental faculty members. career path The doctoral program equips students with skills necessary for successful careers in academia and other sectors. Graduates will move into research and teaching positions, meeting the growing demand for experts in social and computational cognitive science. They may also find positions at organizations that understand how institutional design and governance benefit from a better understanding of the cognitive bases for decision-making. 5 ECONOMICS central european university

6 DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS CEU s Department of Economics is a researchoriented department with an international faculty holding PhDs from some of the best universities in the world. We offer three master s programs and a PhD in economics. career path Our graduates are in high demand from both the private and public sectors in banking, business, and at governmental and international organizations. The latter is especially important since it is often neglected in academic education. The combination of theory and practical application has helped me gain a completely new and more focused view on economic issues. What I really appreciate about the Economics Department is how we deal with one another. We have very open and deep discussions in class. I have even had disagreements with professors but I don t feel that it s a bad thing, rather an opportunity for genuine discussion with a teaching partner.

18 Central European University is a crossroads university that is home to students and faculty members from more than 100 countries. The University offers English-language graduate programs in the social sciences and humanities, business and economics, environmental sciences and policy, law, and mathematics. CEU was founded in 1991 by George Soros, the American-Hungarian financier and philanthropist, in response to revolutionary changes that were transforming Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. His goal was to create an institution that would be a source of intellectual support for building open and democratic societies that respect human rights. In the two decades since, CEU has developed a distinct academic approach: combining regional studies with an international perspective, emphasizing comparative and interdisciplinary research to generate scholarship and policy initiatives, and promoting good governance and the rule of law. CEU is known for excellence in teaching and research with purpose. At the core of its mission lies a set of principles: the pursuit of truth wherever it may lead, respect for the diversity of cultures and peoples, and commitment to resolve differences through debate not denial. The dozens of people whose faces appear in this publication represent CEU s worldwide community of more than 12,000 alumni, faculty, students, staff, and supporters. We are CEU. And we invite you to join us.

26 Welcome to budapest Budapest is at the center of the new Europe that integrates East and West. Just a few hours from Vienna, Prague, and Belgrade, Budapest has been chosen by numerous international organizations including the UN and major multinational companies as a base of operations. It is a vibrant city that is comfortable, affordable, and safe. The Performing Arts The Hungarian National Opera House, on tree-lined Andrassy Boulevard, is one of the world s premier venues for both opera and ballet, and is an architectural wonder worth a visit in its own right. On the Danube south of CEU stands the Palace of Arts, a state-of-the art concert hall complex offering classical, jazz, and other concerts as well as dance performances and exhibitions at its Ludwig Museum. Boats moored on the Danube, such as A38 and the Columbus Jazz Boat, are superb venues for bands of every musical genre, and a hotspot for Budapest s world-class jazz scene. Also, the Papp Laszlo Sport Arena draws major international acts from Sting to Cirque du Soleil as well as professional sporting events. Open-Air Fun Budapest is home to Sziget, Europe s Best Major Festival, a week-long extravaganza in August featuring concerts, food, drink, and camping that attracts Europe s biggest bands. Year-round, Budapest hosts countless festivals, from wine-tasting to contemporary design, horse racing to folk arts, documentary film to world music even a downtown snowboarding show. Thermal Baths Budapest is the City of Spas, with thermal baths dating back to Ottoman and Roman times. Szechenyi Baths, the grande dame, is a neo-baroque palace in the City Park where the water is hot enough for soaking under the stars next to snow banks in January. Each bath has a totally different character, so it is worth trying them all. And once a year, on the Night of Spas, five of them play live music for bathhoppers who make the rounds, soaking and dancing in their swimsuits till 3 a.m. Dining CEU is so centrally located that everyone will find something to suit their tastes nearby, whether it be sushi or goulash, tacos or curry, hamburgers or hummus. There s something for every budget too, from cafeteria-style eateries to Michelin-starred luxury. Budapest has a vibrant coffee house culture practically invented here at the turn of the century that includes intellectual gathering places unchanged since 1899 as well as global coffee-chain outlets. Nightlife A truly new nightlife phenomenon has evolved in Budapest over the past two decades: ruin pubs that occupy dilapidated courtyards and rooftops transformed into trendy nightspots dotted with furniture salvaged from flea markets. The city is also home to jazz lounges, dance clubs, and bohemian hideaways. Getting Around The public transport system boasts an extensive network of subways, trams, and buses, with three railway station hubs. Student rooms are private, with their own bathrooms. Activities include concerts, holiday parties, international food nights, dance and yoga classes, day trips outside Budapest, hiking and biking trips, and film screenings. Student Organizations Our students are active in a wide variety of CEU organizations. The Student Life Office provides logistical support and funding for student groups and cultural activities, often in tandem with the Student Union, which sponsors various clubs and helps organize extracurricular activities. These include seasonal parties, sports events, multicultural festivals, and the Spring Ball. Student organizations include the CEU Choir, Budapest Spa Lovers Club, Blank Pages Society, Muslim Student Association, Sustainable Campus Initiative, Women s Soccer Club, Classic Film Club, LGBTQI Club, Personal Growth Group, Debate Society, Photography Club, Philosophy Film Club, and Vegetarian Cooking Club. Internationally distinguished experts discuss solutions to challenges as diverse as stabilizing the euro zone, ending impunity for perpetrators of war crimes, and convincing world leaders to pursue the most far-reaching climatechange policies. Other recent topics include the future of energy security and the future of journalism, Internet governance and regulation of political communication, instruments of international justice, and moral questions of life extension. The University is also alive with cultural activity. Its Center for Arts and Culture and its Open Society Archives, for example, host hundreds of events every year, including documentary film screenings, photo and art exhibitions, public lecturers by art historians, and concerts by up-and-coming musicians. The Neighborhood CEU is in the heart of Budapest. Located right downtown, just two blocks from the Danube River, it is surrounded by art galleries, bookstores, cafés, theaters, and restaurants.
