Akeyreasonforthepersistenceofpaper basedprocessesistheoverarchingusabilityofpenandpaper. Botharehighlyfamiliartoanyonewhohasgrownupinanevenminimallymodernsociety;theyare extremelyruggedanddependable;andtheyhavenoappreciablelearningcurveorbarriertoentry.this iswhatmakespenandpapersounique:despitetheadvancesintheuserexperienceofcomputers, tablets,andsmartphones,therearemanyusecasesandtypesofuserswhereapenandpaperare vastlysuperiortokeyboard,mouse,ortouchscreen. Thereinliestheinnovators dilemma,paper processversion:thegrowingrequirementforbusiness processautomationisrunninghead onintotheproblemofcapturingpaper basedinformationina digitalform.whilescanningandmaintainingadigitalfacsimileofadocumentcansufficeinsome limitedcases,failingtofullycapturetheinformationenteredonagivenpieceofpapercanhavethe effectofgroundingkeyelementsofprocessautomationina20 th centurypieceofun digitizedpaper. Thisisparticularlytrueforprocessesinwhichthepaperdocumentispartofaprocessworkflowand wheretheactualinformationentereddeterminesthenextsteporstepsintheprocess.
