Using the TTU Streaming Server Academic Computing Support Information Technology Services Tennessee Technological University May 2002-Rev. 6/06 1. Before you begin Decide which format you will use for your content. There are two options available on the Streaming Server. You need to choose the one that will work for you. Windows Media Services Apple s Darwin Streaming Server MS Media Quicktime For an account, Lauren Neal (lneal@tntech.edu) with your name, department, phone, and specify which of the streaming server products listed above that you want to use. Your content, audio, multimedia, etc., will reside on the streaming server in your account. You will provide links to this content from your current web site(s), such as from your web pages on TTUweb, Iweb, or WebCT. Note that links to your content from WebCT will function the same as links to other external sites and thus are not limited to use only by students in your class. Although you can place your internet media content on your web site, it will not be streamed unless it is on one of the servers listed above. 2. Creating your content Basic Tips: Consider your audience and their likely means of accessing your materials. Keep things simple for the user. If audio with slides will work for the content you have, then use that. If video is needed, remember that it will be compressed. Start with the best quality you can and then work on compression as needed. Match the format of your output with the correct server. Be sure to include a link on your web site to the appropriate location for free download of the appropriate player. Contact The Institute for Technological Scholarship (institute@tntech.edu) for help with the techniques of creating content. Information Technology Services May 2002-Rev. 6/06
Streaming Server Page 3 3. Moving your content to the streaming server To move your content from your PC to the streaming server you may use several methods. From your office computer: Right-click on My Computer Select Map Network Drive from the floating menu. Choose an unused drive letter, such as S: Type the location: For Windows Media Server: For Darwin (Apple) Server: \\stream\windowsmedia \\stream\quicktime Select Reconnect at logon if your work is ongoing. Click Finish. Navigate to your specific folder. From your home: Use an FTP program, such as WS_FTP (see to transfer files from your home computer to the streaming media server. Connect to the streaming server: stream.tntech.edu After you are connected, navigate to the appropriate streaming folder and then to your specific user folder. WindowsMedia, or QuickTime
Streaming Server Page 4 3. Moving your content to the streaming server Using WS_FTP: Open the program Click New to create a new profile. Give your profile a descriptive name Type the host name: stream.tntech.edu Select Automatic detect Type ttu\ followed by your specific username, e.g., ttu\ewells Click OK. Type your password as requested in the pop-up window. Navigate on the server (Remote Site) through the Media folders to your specific folder. Navigate on your PC to the location of the media file(s). Click on the arrow to tranfer the files. (If view is top bottom, not left right as below, click the Options button near the bottom and under the Display tab, deselect Alternate screen layout.) Click Close to close the connection and Exit to exit the program.
Streaming Server Page 5 4. Windows Media Services Creating links to your content under Windows Media Services Windows Media Services will stream files in the following formats: Windows Media Audio format (.wma) (Requires Windows Media Player 7) Advanced Streaming Format (.asf) MP3 Although you can create a straightforward link to your content on the Microsoft Multimedia server as shown below, this is NOT the preferred method of providing a link to your content, since it may not be processed correctly by all browsers. <a href="mms://stream.tntech.edu/path/filename">title of Movie</a> Instead, you should use a metafile to link to your content. A metafile references your content on the server and allows the media to play outside of the browser in the Windows Media player with all the controls available to the user. a) Create a Windows Media metafile Metafiles use XML-based scripting language which looks similar to HTML. As you will see in the example below, there are typically pairs of tags. Use a text editor, such as Notepad or PFE: From the Start menu, select Programs Accessories Notepad For example, to open one media file named history.asf located in Guglielmo Marconi s directory in the folder 20thcent you would type the commands shown below. Begin and end with the ASX tag which indicates this is a Windows Media metafile. Within the Entry tag the location of the media is specified in the Ref href tag. The general form is <Ref href= mms://stream.tntech.edu/path/filename /> The mms refers to the Windows Media streaming protocol.
Streaming Server Page 6 4. Windows Media Services (cont.) From the menu, select File Save As: Browse to locate the folder with your local copy of your website on your PC Select All Files under Save as type Type a filename that ends with the appropriate extension.asx Click Save. Play List: You can also create a play list of several files by listing them one after the other using the Entry and Ref href tags. For example if user Marconi had three history files: <ASX Version="3.0"> <entry> <Ref href="mms://stream.tntech.edu/gmarconi/20thcent/history1.asf"/> </entry> <entry> <Ref href="mms://stream.tntech.edu/gmarconi/20thcent/history2.asf"/> </entry> <entry> <Ref href="mms://stream.tntech.edu/gmarconi/20thcent/history3.asf"/> </entry> </ASX>
Streaming Server Page 7 4. Windows Media Services (cont.) Adding Informational Tags: Several other tags may be useful to you including the Title, Author, and Copyright tags. These are displayed in the Media player and/or are available under the Properties sheet in the player. Example: To add title, author, and copyright information to G. Marconi s metafile, between the Entry tags, add: <Entry> <Title>History of Radio Broadcasting</Title> <Abstract>A history of the development of the radio in the 20th century</abstract> <Author>G. Marconi</Author> <Copyright>2002, G. Marconi</Copyright> <Ref href="mms://stream.tntech.edu/gmarconi/20thcent/history.asf"/> </Entry> For more information on tags, see the Microsoft web site: b) Create a link to the Windows Media metafile on your web page Use the general form: <a href="filename.asx">title of Movie</a> In the example above, assuming you put the file history.asx in the same folder as the web page displaying the link: <a href="history.asx">history of Radio Broadcasting</a> c) Publish or FTP your web site to incorporate the new links on your web page(s) and to move the metafiles to your site on the web server.
Streaming Server Page 8 5. Apple Darwin Server Creating links to your QuickTime content on the Apple Darwin Server Streaming Quicktime under Darwin requires a two step process, as on the RealServer. First a plain text file with the extension.mov must be created on your web site with the code that references the QuickTime movie. This file will have a line a code that gives the location of the QuickTime media file on the QuickTime streaming server. Then a link must be created on your web page that points to this created reference file. a) Create a reference file Use a text editor, such as Notepad or PFE: From the Start menu, select Programs Accessories Notepad Type the reference to your movie on the first line of the file in the general form rtsptext rtsp://streamqt.tntech.edu/path/filename.mov From the menu, select File Save As: Browse to locate the folder with your local copy of your website on your PC Select All Files under Save as type Type a filename that ends with the extension.mov In addition, it is helpful to give the file a name that clearly indicates it is a file that references your movie and is not the actual movie file itself Example: A movie named historyqt.mov in Guglielmo Marconi s streaming Darwin Server account in the folder 20thcent would be:
Streaming Server Page 9 5. Apple Darwin Server (cont.) b) Create a link to your reference file in the same browser window Use the general form: <a href="movieref.mov">title of Movie</a> In the example above, assuming you put the file in the same folder as the web page displaying the link: <a href="radioref2.mov">history of Radio Broadcasting</a> c) Or create a link to your reference file in a new browser window Use the general form: <a href="movieref.mov" target="quicktimeplayer">title of Movie</a> In the example above, assuming you put the file in the same folder as the web page displaying the link: <a href="radioref2.mov" target="quicktimeplayer">history of Radio Broadcasting</a> d) Publish or FTP your web site to incorporate the new links on your web page(s) and to move any reference files (.mov files) to your site on the web server. 6. Open the QuickTime player outside of the browser If you want to open QuickTime outside of the browser in a way that will work with both Netscape and more recent versions of Internet Explorer (5.5, SP2), you need to include code that can be read by both browsers. In the example below, the embed tag is read by Netscape, while the Object and its associated parameter tags is read by Internet Explorer. a) Create the reference file as shown previously. b) Download or create a short clip to use in the browser window. Clicking on this clip will launch the target movie in QuickTime Player. This short clip should be saved on your web site. In this example, the short clip will be named shortclip.mov
Streaming Server Page Open media in the QuickTime player outside of the browser c) Add this code to your web page to reference your movie so as to be accessible to both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers. The code in bold must be exactly as shown below. You may wish to cut and paste some of this code from Apple s web site at: <p>click the movie clip below to launch the History of Radio movie in the QuickTime Player</p> <object CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" CODEBASE=" width="165" height="30"> <param name="src" value="shortclip.mov"> <param name="autoplay" value="true"> <param name="controller" value="false"> <param name="loop" value="palindrome"> <param name="href" value=" <param name="target" value="quicktimeplayer"> <embed src=".shortclip.mov" target="quicktimeplayer" width="165" height="30" type="video/quicktime" href=" pluginspage=" controller="false" autoplay="true" loop="palindrome"></embed> </object> </body> The ClassId and Codebase must be specified exactly as shown above. This will cause the browser plug-in to be downloaded if needed. Set a height and width that is appropriate for your short clip. In the parameter source tag (src), the value should specify the path to the short clip on your web site in relation to this web page. For example if your short clip was in a folder named radio, the value would be: value= radio/shortclip.mov Set autoplay to true to run the shortclip automatically when the page comes up The controller is set to false so that no controls are seen on the short clip. It runs continuously and serves simply as a link to the target movie. Set loop to either true or palindrome. If true the movie plays continuously, if set to palindrome it plays forwards and then backwards. Set the href to the location of the reference movie file which contains the command to run the movie from the streaming server. Set the target to QuickTime which opens the player if it is not already running.
