5 Family Sciences Academic Programs & Clinic Counseling and Development (C&D) The Counseling and Development program of the Department of Family Sciences is an exciting and dynamic area that offers professional training and development leading to a Master's Degree in Counseling and Development (MS). Students may choose to focus on Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Professional School Counseling, or a dual degree in counseling and music therapy. These degrees will prepare students to be eligible to receive licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) and/or certification as a professional school counselor (K-12). Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) The Child Development / Early Childhood Education program prepares students for a variety of professional roles focused on serving the needs of children and their families. Potential roles include work as a parent educator, administer of children s programs, work in public and private agencies focused on children and families, becoming a Child Life Specialist, work in the early childhood intervention field, teach at the college and university level, and other roles requiring similar knowledge and skills. Family & Consumer Sciences / Family Studies (FCS / FSt) A degree in Family Studies prepares students to work in a variety of satisfying career roles aimed at strengthening families and creating positive futures for everyone. Family Studies graduates have careers in human services, family-related agencies, working with families in social service agencies ranging from child to geriatric, services to church and family planning agencies, parent or family life educators and serves as an excellent foundation for graduate degrees in family studies, family therapy, and counseling and development. ADVISING MATTERS! Don t self-advise seek out quality, accurate information from your faculty advisor! 5
6 Family Therapy (FTh) Texas Woman s University was the first public university in Texas to offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees for marriage and family therapists. Our experienced faculty members foster the understanding and clinical practice of systemic family therapy theories. The M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Family Therapy contain the courses required by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage & Family Therapists to take the national licensing examination after completion of the degree. Our graduates work in many settings, including private practice, social service agencies, schools, physicians offices and hospitals, veterans programs, universities, faith communities, and corporate employee assistance programs. Counseling and Family Therapy Clinic The TWU Counseling and Family Therapy Clinic, housed within the Department of Family Sciences in the Human Development Building (HDB), provides low cost counseling for adults through family, couple, groups, and individual services. We also offer play therapy for children ages 3 10 and creative arts therapy for adolescents and adults. The Clinic staff consists of graduate students from two disciplines, Family Therapy and Counseling and Development, who are being trained to deliver therapy to assist clients to resolve a variety of issues. They are supervised by clinical supervisors, managers and the clinic Director. The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude: be kind, but not weak: be bold, but not bully: be thoughtful, but not lazy: be humble, but not timid: be proud, but not arrogant: have humor, but without folly. Jim Rohn Before his death in 2009, Rohn was world renown as an influential, motivational speaker. 6
