Certificate III Health Administration Module 4 Part A BSBMED301B Interpret and Apply Medical Terminology Appropriately Module 4 Assessment Tasks (BSBMED301B,) V1.2 06/12/2012 Page 1
LEARNING ACTIVITIES Complete all the Learning Activities set throughout modules 4 part A providing evidence and examples where indicated. They have been listed below for your convenience. All policies and procedures provided as evidence must align with industry standards, procedures, policies and legislation for compliance. Therefore, if your current practice policies are not adequate you are required to rewrite them and submit the new policies. Your responses will be assessed in combination with your policies and procedures. To be marked competent for this assessment you must also demonstrate a consistent level of performance across a range of workplace situations. Learning Activity Explain how written and oral instructions using basic medical terminology are received, documented and understood in your work situation. In your answer include references to at least five of the following: basic systems of the body, body parts, common diseases, common injuries or conditions, common medical investigations, common procedures, common medications, commonly used medical equipment, or referrals Learning Activity Are checklists or flow charts used in your practice to assist with tasks? What areas are they most commonly used in? Why do you find them useful? Do you keep a list of commonly used abbreviations and symbols? How do think this would assist new staff? 2. List at least five occasions when abbreviations can be expected to be used in your practice. List at least 10 commonly used abbreviations and what they stand for, that you regularly come across during your usual duties. Does every member of the team have a good understanding of these terms? How is knowledge of the terms shared? 3. Are there policies and procedures for the use of medical terminology in your practice? How do these relate to your particular role? When an abbreviation or medical term is used that is not understood, where is assistance sought? Is this made clear in the policy? Send the policy as evidence. Learning Activity Find a copy of your position description. Look at the list of tasks and identify areas within each task where you would be required to use basic medical terminology correctly. Submit your position description as evidence. Module 4 Assessment Tasks (BSBMED301B,) V1.2 06/12/2012 Page 2
Learning Activity Show how basic medical terminology is used, and patient confidentiality is maintained in the following oral communication situations: When following verbal instructions; When confirming appointments; Answering routine telephone patient enquiries; Transferring calls; Paging staff; When it is vital to interrupt a doctor; 2. Discuss how basic medical terminology is used, ensuring legislation is followed and self checks are undertaken, when written instructions are communicated in the following situations: Memos; Letters; Forms; Correspondence; Results; Patient records; Appointment letters/cards; Telephone messages; 3. Break the following three words into sections and ascertain their meanings: Cardiology Pericarditis Neonatal 4. List a further three examples of medical words that have a short A vowel sound and three that have a long A vowel sound. Now list a further three medical words that begin with a soft c or g and three that begin with a hard c or g remembering the rule for the letters that follow. 5. Explain the procedure in your practice for checking outbound written medical terminology. Who is the person designated to checking? Submit policy as evidence. Final Assessment Task 2: Scenario Scenario Read the following scenario. Kerry is working in a busy practice that services several nursing homes and home visits for patients who are unable to attend the practice. Dr Gordon is out on one of these home visits when she realises she does not have the latest report from a specialist her patient has been consulting. Dr Gordon phones Kerry and asks her to read the latest report over the phone to her. After a quick glance at the report Kerry becomes distressed as there are a number of abbreviations and medical Module 4 Assessment Tasks (BSBMED301B,) V1.2 06/12/2012 Page 3
terms she does not understand, and Kerry feels she will be viewed as incapable of doing her job properly. What would you advise Kerry to do? Consider the following points: Understanding of Kerry s role in the team; Patient confidentiality in oral communication; Practice policies and procedures; Understanding of commonly used abbreviations; Understanding basic medical terms; Correct pronunciation; Use of checklists; and Seeking clarification or assistance; 3. ACTIVITY 1. The following three extracts are taken from letters to the doctor from specialists. They contain medical terminology that may be difficult to understand for junior staff. Look at the underlined words and explain their meanings: I. Mr White had an x-ray today which revealed osteochondroma of the lateral side of the third right metatarsal head which is pushing on the fourth metatarsal head; II. III. Your patient Ms Brown has been suffering from arthritis in her right knee. An arthroscopy was performed, which was then followed by arthrocentesis. The results show that the medial cartilage is damaged and she will need arthroplasty; Mrs Green has a bilateral palpable mass in both lumber regions. Her abdomen is distended. She has a past history of abdominocentesis and she has also suffered from cirrhosis of the liver. 2. Now, break down the following word into sections to aid with their pronunciation: Osteochondroma Metatarsal Arthritis Arthroscopy Arthrocentesis Arthroplasty Abdominocentesis Cirrhosis 3. Match up the following equipment with the correct specialist: Equipment Specialist Audiometer ENT Specialist Culdoscope Gastroenterologist Cystoscope Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Gastroscope Dermatologist Module 4 Assessment Tasks (BSBMED301B,) V1.2 06/12/2012 Page 4
Gonioscope Urologist Opthalmoscope Ophthalmologist Otoscope Rhinoscope Snellen s Chart 4. EVIDENCE Send copies of the following as evidence of competency. You should submit copies of relevant evidence to allow the assessor to link your responses with the documents. If your existing practice policies are inadequate you should rewrite them and submit the new policies. Any information with patient details should be de-identified before submitting: Use of medical terminology in written communication, e.g. policies and procedures; Appropriate use of abbreviations for medical terms and associated processes, e.g. memos, phone messages etc; Module 4 Assessment Tasks (BSBMED301B,) V1.2 06/12/2012 Page 5
