11 Olentangy Local Schools Department of Transportation BE A SAFE BUS RIDER Everyone that rides or is near a school bus plays an important role in bus safety. It s important for all students to understand the expected conduct while on or near a bus and the consequences for violating the rules. Please take some time to review and talk with your child about safety and conduct when on or near a bus. In addition, feel free to contact the Transportation Department with any questions at (740) BUS CONDUCT RULES (pages of Elementary Student Handbook) Students are expected to obey safety rules when on or near a bus and understand that the driver is in charge of the bus at all times. Any student who repeatedly violates the safety precautions and/or busrules may be denied the privilege of riding the bus and is subject to other disciplinary action to be determined by the principal and/or transportation supervisor. 1. Students are to be at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled bus arrival time and wait quietly for the bus to arrive. The bus will not wait. 2. Students are to go directly to their assigned seat and remain seated facing forward until the bus arrives at the destination. NO STANDING OR CHANGING OF SEATS IS PERMITTED. 3. Students must be completely silent while the bus crosses railroad tracks. 4. No vandalism, eating, drinking or smoking is permitted. (This includes candy, gum and canned drinks.) 5. Students should never put any part of their body out the window of a bus. 6. Throwing of objects inside or outside the bus is not permitted. 7. No fighting or bad language is permitted. 8. A bus pass is required from any student who must ride a different bus or exit at a stop other than their regular stop. 9. School rules apply on the school bus. 10. Students must follow directions the first time the driver asks. SAFE BUS RIDER RULES A safe school bus rider is one who behaves and obeys all school bus safety rules. Leaving for School 1. Get up early enough to be on time. 2. Dress properly for the day. 3. Be at the bus stop five minutes ahead of time. 4. Wait on the sidewalk or back off the road. 5. At the bus stop, do not run or play ball. 6. Do not play in or near the road. 7. Do not allow a younger child or pet to follow you to the bus stop. 8. Never walk or play near the street or at the bus stop to prevent sliding or falling under a car or bus. 9. When the bus approaches, get in line back from the road. 10. Wait until the bus stops and the door is open before stepping near the bus. 11. Use the handrail. 12. Take a seat quickly. On the Bus 1. Always sit, do not move around. 2. Always face the front of the bus and do not turn around. 3. Talk only just above a whisper. 4. Do not throw things on the bus. 5. Do not fight or fool around. 6. Do not bring oversized items on the bus that you are not able to hold in your lap. Arriving at Destination 1. Do not get up until the bus is stopped. 2. Use the handrail. 3. Move immediately away from the bus.
