37 Note: The supported logging levels are: FATAL ERROR WARN INFO DEBUG The default logging level is WARN. 3. Save the file. Note: By default, log statements related to the dmcl web application are printed to the dmcl_http.log file available here: <$TOMCAT_HOME>/webapps/dmcl/WEB INF. Integrating iviews for Related Content related logging with SAP Portal s logging system Overview This section contains the following topics: Introducing SAP s definition of logging and tracing, page 37 Integrating iviews for Related Content and SAP Portal logging, page 39 Introducing SAP s definition of logging and tracing Overview You can integrate iviews for Related Content related logging with SAP Portal s logging system. SAP logging clearly differentiates between logs and traces. This section contains the following topics: Logging, page 38 Tracing, page 38 Difference between logging and tracing, page 38 Mapping Log4j s severity levels with SAP logging s severity levels, page 38 EMC Documentum Content Services for SAP iviews for Related Content Version 6.0 Administration Guide 37

38 Logging SAP defines logging as creating and storing a permanent record of events that can be reviewed, printed, and analyzed. This record usually contains information about the source of the record, a timestamp of the event, a message, and a severity which specifies the importance of the record. All the information of an event is recorded; administrators use this information to control the status of the system, the database, and all applications. Logs get written automatically and with a predefined granularity (severity), which can be modified during runtime. SAP intends for logs to be used by administrators. Logs have a.log file extension. Tracing SAP defines tracing as a utility that writes detailed information about an operation to an output file. The trace facility produces a detailed sequence of statements that describe the events of an operation as they are executed. Administrators and developers use the trace facility for diagnosing an abnormal condition; therefore tracing is not normally turned on. Traces can be switched on if a problem has occurred and a detailed analysis of a distinct part of a program is necessary. SAP intends for traces to be used by developers. Traces have a.trc file extension. Difference between logging and tracing Logs are normally written to categories and traces are normally written to locations. Categories are semantic topics corresponding generally to administration tasks. Locations refer to certain points in the software code and can be identified with package, class, or function names. Mapping Log4j s severity levels with SAP logging s severity levels The following table indicates how Log4j s severity levels are mapped to SAP logging s severity levels, and the destination where the messages will be written to. Table 2. Mapping Log4j s severity levels with SAP logging s severity levels This log4j severity level Debug Info Is treated in SAP logging as follows Written to trace files. Written to log files. Category defined in the log4j configuration file. 38 EMC Documentum Content Services for SAP iviews for Related Content Version 6.0 Administration Guide

39 This log4j severity level Warn Error Fatal Other (user defined severity level) Is treated in SAP logging as follows Written to log files. Category defined in the log4j configuration file. Written to log files. Category defined in the log4j configuration file. Written to log files. Category defined in the log4j configuration file. Written to log files. Category defined in the log4j configuration file. Integrating iviews for Related Content and SAP Portal logging Overview By default, iviews for Related Content logging system is enabled so that it can be configured with SAP Portal logging. The log4j_ivrc.properties file contains the following code snippet that enables the integration of these two logging systems: log4j.appender.saplogging=com.documentum.ei.eplogging.saplogappender log4j.appender.saplogging.categoryname=documentum/ivrc Note: To disable the integration of the two logging systems, comment the code snippet referenced previously. When you integrate the two logging systems, log4j_ivrc behaves as the first level of logging; you can control the severity of the log messages going into SAP logging depending on the settings specified in the log4j_ivrc.properties file. This section contains the following topics: Configuring the severity of logging in SAP, page 39 Viewing IVRC related logs in SAP, page 41 Configuring the severity of logging in SAP Depending on the severity of the log4j log messages, they are written either to SAP s default trace or the appropriate log category. You can control the severity level of the IVRC specific logs in SAP. To control the severity level of IVRC specific logging in SAP: 1.
