4 C ar r o l l C o unty and Gr e at e r B alt i mo r e Re gi o n Pr ofile Carroll County, Maryland is a 452 square mile area that lies 31 miles northwest of Baltimore and 56 miles north of Washington, D.C. It is one of the seven jurisdictions that define the Baltimore metropolitan area. The County seat of Westminster and seven other incorporated towns help to define Carroll County as an attractive suburban location. Airy Sykesville The Greater Baltimore Region is comprised of Baltimore City and six surrounding counties (Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Harford, and Howard) and encompasses more than 3,100 square miles of land. Nearly 2.7 million people reside in the region, making the area the 20th largest metro area in the United States. The region is a key economic center for Maryland and home to several Fortune 500 companies, as well as numerous prominent small and medium-sized businesses. Residents enjoy a high per-capita income and employers find a highly educated workforce. Carroll Technology Council (CTC) The Carroll Technology Council (CTC) advances technology through educational and networking opportunities for members. Maryland Business License Information System (BLIS) A service of the Maryland Department of Business & Economic Development, visit BLIS to learn about permits and licenses that your business may need. Maryland Dept. of Business & Economic Development (DBED) Maryland s one-stop economic development shop strives to attract new businesses, stimulate private investment, encourage the expansion and retention of existing companies and provide Maryland business with workforce training and financial assistance. Maryland Space Business Roundtable The Maryland Space Business Roundtable (MSBR) encourages the growth and development of aerospacerelated business in Maryland. The MSBR focuses on the future of high technology by providing educational forums led by aerospace experts. Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) TEDCO s mission is to facilitate the creation of businesses and to foster growth throughout all regions of the State through commercialization of technology. National Institute for Standards & Technology (NIST) NIST is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Commerce Department s Technology Administration.
