4 C ar r o l l C o unty and Gr e at e r B alt i mo r e Re gi o n Pr ofile Carroll County, Maryland is a 452 square mile area that lies 31 miles northwest of Baltimore and 56 miles north of Washington, D.C. It is one of the seven jurisdictions that define the Baltimore metropolitan area. The County seat of Westminster and seven other incorporated towns help to define Carroll County as an attractive suburban location. Airy Sykesville The Greater Baltimore Region is comprised of Baltimore City and six surrounding counties (Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Harford, and Howard) and encompasses more than 3,100 square miles of land. Nearly 2.7 million people reside in the region, making the area the 20th largest metro area in the United States. The region is a key economic center for Maryland and home to several Fortune 500 companies, as well as numerous prominent small and medium-sized businesses. Residents enjoy a high per-capita income and employers find a highly educated workforce. Greater Baltimore still provides a low cost of living, compared to other major metro areas, and it is well-connected to urban regions along the Northeast Corridor. 2

The Milken Institute ranks Maryland second overall nationally for its rich technology and science assets including research & development, risk capital and infrastructure, human capital investment (labor force talent), technology and science work force, and technology concentration as a part of total business. Carroll Community College s Business Training Group offers an extensive curriculum of technology, business, and professional development courses from internationally renowned training organizations that can be customized to meet specific training needs. The campus is networked with IBM computer labs, SMART classrooms, and a multi-media conference center for all levels of technical training. Classes can be held at the company or at the college. SBDC offers technical assistance, specialized training, counseling and a specialized procurement program (Procurement Technical Assistance Program) to help small businesses sell products or services to federal, state and local agencies. Carroll Technology Council (CTC) The Carroll Technology Council (CTC) advances technology through educational and networking opportunities for members. CTC operates CompuKids, a program that provides computers to qualified children of the Carroll County Public School District, and LOCATE (List of Carroll Area Technology Expertise), CTC s online directory of Carroll technology service providers. Maryland Business License Information System (BLIS) A service of the Maryland Department of Business & Economic Development, visit BLIS to learn about permits and licenses that your business may need. Maryland Dept. of Business & Economic Development (DBED) Maryland s one-stop economic development shop strives to attract new businesses, stimulate private investment, encourage the expansion and retention of existing companies and provide Maryland business with workforce training and financial assistance. The Department markets local products and services at home and abroad. Maryland Space Business Roundtable The Maryland Space Business Roundtable (MSBR) encourages the growth and development of aerospacerelated business in Maryland. The MSBR focuses on the future of high technology by providing educational forums led by aerospace experts. Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) TEDCO s mission is to facilitate the creation of businesses and to foster growth throughout all regions of the State through commercialization of technology. TEDCO S Board is comprised of leaders in the State s technology community and contains representatives from the private, university, non-profit, and public sectors. Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech) The Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech) seeks to educate the next generation of technology entrepreneurs, create successful technology ventures, and connect Maryland companies with university resources to help them succeed. 14

17 Maryland Technology Extension Service (MTES) A division of Mtech, the Maryland Technology Extension Service (MTES), offers on-site technical assistance to Maryland manufacturers in lean manufacturing/production, new technology development, growth, sustainability and technical solutions. National Institute for Standards & Technology (NIST) NIST is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Commerce Department s Technology Administration. NIST s mission is to develop and promote measurement, standards, and technology to enhance productivity, facilitate trade, and improve the quality of life. National Technology Transfer Center (NTTC) The National Technology Transfer Center (NTTC) links U.S. industry with federal labs and universities to maximize product development opportunities. Technology Council of Maryland The Technology Council of Maryland is Maryland s largest technology trade association representing over 500 members.
