WHAT DO EACH OF THESE HAVE IN COMMON? They contain Sandalwood notes. 70% of the top 10 premium fragrances contain Sandalwood notes (Euromonitor).
SINCE ANCIENT TIMES Sandalwood has been used for thousands of years. It is referenced in Ancient Sanskrit texts (2000BC) and Egyptian heiroglyphics. It was sacred and as precious as gold.
AN ICON OF BEAUTY Beauty icon Cleopatra (40BC) used Sandalwood as an aphrodisiac and beauty treatment. Throughout the ages Sandalwood has been synonymous with love & passion, the fragrance of Aphrodite (8BC).
ANCIENT PERFUMERY Sandalwood s history in perfumery is said to have started with Indian attars, an art that is as old as civilization itself. Archaeological evidence shows plants were revered in ancient India. Sandalwood is the foundation of these oilbased perfumes.
NATURAL BENEFITS Sandalwood has long been used as a relaxant by Buddhist monks. Research has shown it is a serotonin agonist that promotes wellbeing and relaxation, when inhaled target compounds alpha-santalol and beta-santalol enter the bloodstream (Jirowitz: 1992).
MODERN PERFUMERY In modern perfumery, Sandalwood has proven to be a classic and inimitable ingredient, a hallmark of many classic fragrances. Since 1750, 46% of all 7,000 classified fragrances contained Sandalwood notes
CLASSIC NOTES Iris* 50,000-80,000 Oud 15,000-60,000 Rose 7,000 Jasmine* 3,000 Neroli 2,500 Sandalwood holds a noble place amongst classic notes. It is a fixative that extends a perfume, naturally. *absolute
Yet this exquisite beauty and noble past is now threatened...
On 11 June 2011 a journalist was shot dead in broad daylight. He was preparing to write a story on sandalwood smuggling in India.
SMUGGLING has assumed alarming proportions. - IUCN Threatened Species Redlist, Santalum album
THE SITUATION IS DIRE A natural resource has been destroyed by poaching in India & Indonesia. The risk has never been greater.
WE ARE ALL PART OF THIS Illegal product is moved across borders. Oil is adulterated. People and environments are destroyed.
TIME FOR CHANGE The people, planet and products suffer with the current supply chain. A new source is urgently needed one that draws on Sandalwood s ancient past, yet also paves a bright future.
2013 MARKS A NEW ERA A plantation model for Santalum album that supports sustainability, and respects the environment, people & biodiversity
FROM A PRISTINE PLACE More than 30 years ago Australian Researchers identified the high levels of sunshine, climatic conditions and soil types of tropical Australia as an ideal environment for Indian Sandalwood.
PIONEERING AN INDUSTRY In 1999 TFS, led by Frank Wilson (now CEO) planted seeds from the Mysore region of India, creating the Kimberley s first commercial plantation. The Kimberley region is 3 times the size of England with only 40,000 people.
TFS WORLD LEADER 2.6 million Sandalwood trees. Over 5 million trees in total (incl. host trees). This creates a forest area that is 33 times the size of Monaco (65 km2). Our aim? Stability and long-term supply.
SPECIALIST FORESTRY Over the past 15 years TFS has built an expert team of foresters and agronomists, and invested in research to improve yields and survival rates. This has also allowed for green strategies that also improve efficiency.
RESPECTING THE PLANET Water recycling saves 7-billion litres of water pa, while drip irrigation saves 90% of traditional water usage. Biodiesel is used for some tractors and machines, and waste wood from plantations is used to fuel final processing.
QUALITY MADE NATURALLY Our steam distillation uses purified recycled water and rainwater. We also aim to use all of the tree no waste. The result is the highest standard of oil (ISO 3501) and products made with ecoprocessing.
NEW LEVEL OF FAIR TRADE The Natural Origin Recognition Protocol (NORP) respects the traditional owners of Santalum album in India. TFS is working with BBA to promote education, human rights and democracy to a village where Sandalwood once grew.
Economic development Human Rights no child labour Village parliament Education Women s Rights DIGNITY. RESPECT. EMPOWERMENT. Since 2011 we have built a foundation, in 2013 the program will be extended, building local democratic process and looking for new ways of economic development.
FOCUS ON THE FUTURE In an Aboriginal community just out of Kununurra just 2 elders spoke the traditional language. Through sponsorship of an art and language program, TFS has helped the community share traditional culture.
BUILDING PRIDE As well as sponsorship TFS made and sells cards with the art - the school receives all profits. In just 9 months more than $5,000 has been raised to help build a community cultural centre.
A BETTER, MORE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT The result is a legal and transparent supply, using a framework for quality, socialresponsibility, environment and safety. This gives our customers security of supply.
FROM SOIL TO OIL VIDEO BELOW*
OLFACTORY PROFILE Samples are currently being distributed for your consideration. These include: Santalum album (India) Santalum album (plantation-grown, Australia)
THANK YOU To all of the perfumers who have assisted us over the years, helping us to develop new products, test the olfactory profile and given us information and inspiration that has brought us to this point. We look forward to working with you into the future.
