2 1. ABOUT DAINGEAN Daingean is a small town in Offaly, formerly known as Philipstown. Situated on the banks of the Grand Canal, it has a population of approximately It is 8 miles from Tullamore, 10 miles from Edenderry and an hour s drive from Dublin. The area is famous for its Peatlands, with many people employed by Bord Na Mona. There is now a recycling plant in the former briquette factory building. In the past agriculture was the main industry but not anymore, there are some small local businesses such as Daingean Joinery, Kileshill Concrete, Sanderwood Stone. Most local people now travel to work in neighbouring towns with many commuting daily to Dublin. Of historic interest locally, is the grave of Charles Dodgson, grandfather of Lewis Carroll, the Gandon designed Town Hall and monastic Croghan Hill. The town s leisure attractions include an annual week long festival in August, fishing in the canal and golfing in Castle Barna. There are approximately 200 pupils in Daingean National School. The school recently got a new extension and has a large assembly hall and fully equipped computer room. Thanks to the efforts of parents, the school is quite well resourced. Many children attend an After School Club run by Daingean Community Playgroup. As well as having homework supervised, children also take part in kinder music and sport. There is no secondary school in Daingean. 2. DESCRIPTION OF THE BRIEF Daingean National School would like to commission a musician to deliver a music project with a lasting outcome to take place during the school year 2009/2010 We are open to accepting proposals from musicians (or a collaboration of musicians) of any genre, from classical to traditional to world music. Engagement with the students is a prerequisite. Musicians must bear in mind that not every student will be musically literate, but this should not preclude them from participating. We hope that it will be feasible for every student to take part in a participatory process at some level, and that every effort should be made to involve the community as a whole in some aspect of the proposal. The proposal must bear in mind the logistics of working within a primary school context such as class times, breaks, holidays and other classes and teachers that may not be participating at any one time.

3 The preferred commission will have lasting significance and meaning to the pupils, teachers and community, both current and generations to come. The preferred proposal will be well thought out and will reach the community (pupils, teachers, parents etc) in a meaningful way while also providing a strong artistic statement in relation to the musicians own developmental practice. The budget for the overall delivery and all fees including any performances and recordings will be inclusive of all costs, expenses, VAT, insurance and other charges. 3. SELECTION PROCESS Selection will be a two-stage open submission process 3 rd July - Deadline for submission of Stage 1 proposals 24 th July - Shortlisted musicians notified to attend for interview. The selection panel on behalf of Daingean National School reserves the right not to proceed with any of the submissions received and consider other appropriate courses of action. 4. APPLICATION DETAILS Application for Stage I must contain the following information A typed two page proposal outlining ideas and concepts for the project Up to date CV CDs of recordings and or performances. Two or three examples of where your music practices have had community engagement and if relevant, how this has inspired the creation of new work, both personal and/or in the community. Two professional references from those who are familiar with your professional practice and have worked with you before. Your proposed use of the budget and time scale for completion Applications must be posted and clearly addressed to Eileen Moynihan, Principal (Music Commission) Daingean National School Daingean Co. 4 Applications will be assessed using the following criteria Quality of proposal presented both on a stand alone basis and with reference to other competing applicants and in relation to the brief Assessment of the likelihood that the commission will have a meaningful participatory aspect Assessment of the likelihood that the commission will have a lasting impact in the community Understanding of the physical, social and cultural context of the commission. The feasibility of the commission 5. PAYMENT SCHEDULE Stage I Applications The commissioners shall not be liable for any costs or expenses in respect of successful or unsuccessful Stage 1 applicants. Shortlisted applicants attending for interview shall do so at their own expense. The Successful Applicant A contract will be entered into with Daingean National School. The successful applicant shall agree a payment schedule as part of the contract. Payments shall be made in accordance with the schedule outlined in the contract upon receipt of invoices and successful completion of the work. Musicians must provide a tax clearance certificate Evidence of appropriate insurance shall be provided.
