Welcome to Mobile Analytics Introduction The mobile revolution continues unabated. As we saw on Cyber Monday in 2013, mobile shopping was up 28% year-over-year to reach $5.8 billion. 1 Meanwhile, marketers continue to be driven by the need to stay at the forefront of mobile technologies and be one step ahead of the competition. Enterprises are recognizing the importance of personalized brand engagement, as getting multi-channel communication right is crucial to gaining and retaining customers. The rise of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and increasingly now wearables, has given enterprises the opportunity to get closer to their customers through new channels. Brands are engaging with visitors on a more personal level thanks to how far desktop analytics have evolved to allow us to identify visitor behaviors. With the added layer of mobile analytics now part of that mix, we ve opened up a whole new world of understanding as to how customers are using the web on their devices. We have much greater detail, are able to segment visitors in to groups, draw up personas and drive better, more targeted campaigns. This is the world of mobile analytics. This guide is intended to introduce you to the Netbiscuits mobile analytics parameters, to demonstrate how they can be used to drive a deeper understanding of customer preference and behavior. Parameters Parameters provide knowledge points, or data, relating to specific groups of device users. They provide information on groups of customers relating to their preferences, habits and behaviors. We can learn a great deal from reviewing which specific devices customers select to use and when; the brands and technologies that they are engaging with and the features and functionalities which they have access to. This wealth of data enables us to build personas that unlock the value of the data, delivering insights that can be used to predict how users might behave when they visit your site. There are five categories of knowledge that can be used to identify customer segments and behavior. In the first instance, we can learn more about customer inclinations based on device and associated software preferences. Second, these chosen devices dictate the visual and audio experiences that can be delivered, all factors which directly impact how customers perceive a brand. Third, speed and site performance significantly influence how customers interact and behave when they visit your site. Experience has shown that if sites are slow, customers will leave quickly. The fourth major area is understanding customer expectations based on their mobile technology choices. Finally, maximizing reach is indispensable to the success of brand marketing. Parameters in this last group help to identify which strategies are best for achieving this. Here are the parameter groups and specific examples of what can be learned: trends- will- make- you- incredibly- optimistic- about- the- internet- business- in Netbiscuits

1) Customer choice: device and software Device Type Vendor and Model Operating Systems Browsers Which devices are customers choosing to use? Netbiscuits Mobile Analytics data is not limited to just phone or tablet, and includes more specific groups that can be identified additionally such as phablet and wearable tech. When are customers using certain device types the most? This will influence what type of content you may wish to deliver and when. Are most of your customers using Apple, Samsung or other vendor devices? Are they using the latest models on the market, or older models? What can this tell us about these types of customers? Are most customers using ios or Android? Do they upgrade as soon as a newer version of the software is available, or do they wait? How can upgrade activities help us better segment customers based on behavior? Do customers choose to use default browsers such as Safari on Apple? Or are they more adventurous and opt to use Chrome on an iphone? 2) The visual and audio customer experience defined by the device chosen Display Interaction via the display Supported media What screen sizes and resolutions are customers using to access sites and how could this impact their experience of a site? Are users touchscreen-ready? Is a change in screen orientation (landscape and portrait) supported? Could the wrong image, video or audio format affect customer engagement with a site? Can content be streamed, and does this impact bounce rates and abandonment? 3) Customer behavior influenced by site performance Speed Network connection Bandwidth The speed of a site has a direct impact on how customers behave. Using these parameters, customers can be segmented into high, medium and low performance profiles based on hardware features such as device specifications, graphics power and the speed at which devices are capable of running. Find out how advanced your customers are in relation to emerging technologies such as high speed 4G networks? What is the likelihood that they have access to these technologies or will do in the future? A customer will leave a site if it does not load quickly. This parameter enables a marketer to check how bandwidth could be impacting customer engagement. Does this vary according to different types of device? Is there too much content on your site? Netbiscuits

4) Measuring customer expectations Features and functionality Location Cookies File management What do the features and functionalities of a device reveal about a customer? Customers will have access to different levels of technology, such as Bluetooth and near-field communication (NFC), through to gesture control and eye tracking. Expectations are often set by the technologies available, especially amongst customers who have paid for leading edge technologies. Location-based services can provide a much better and more personalized experience for customers. Customers with their GPS activated and actively sharing location will have higher expectations than those who prefer not to share this information. Cookies can reveal more about customer groups and their preferences, or dictate the level of personalization that can be delivered. Whether the browser can support local storage will determine the levels of interaction and personalization that are possible for customer segments. 5) Maximizing reach HTML5, Responsive Web Design (RWD) and video content-led strategies Troubleshooting These parameters enable marketers to make informed assessments around questions such as: Can I implement a RWD strategy without damaging reach or conversion? or Can I build an effective site that is responsive with HTML5? While actual testing generally sits within the web development team, marketers can find out for themselves if there are specific CSS/CSS3/HTML5 components that are not functioning for a given audience, such as HTML5 forms not working on a payment screen. This removes the need to rely on developer device testing alone, and can help identify whether KPIs are being impacted by technical considerations as opposed to content issues. This facilitates a better dialogue between the marketer, whose targets may be being impacted, and the technical team. Netbiscuits

1. Choice of device and software We can learn more about customer behavior based on device and associated software preferences. These parameters help us segment customers into user groups, such as tablet users and phone users; mainstream Apple and Android users versus those who prefer an alternative; up-to-date software users versus laggards, etc... The parameters can also help marketers build-up a picture of their mobile web landscape, such as determining vendor shares of traffic, operating systems shares or browser shares. Device Type DeviceType Explore what devices customers are choosing to use. This parameter provides a detailed breakdown including device types such as ereader, mobile phone, tablet, set-top box (TV) and wearable computer. Device Vendor DeviceVendor Build a picture of the device landscape of your customers. With this parameter you can find out the share of traffic accounted for by different vendors, such as Apple, Samsung, Nokia or BlackBerry. Device Model DeviceModelName DeviceModelSeries Find out the most popular devices accessing your site. These parameters show the device name and model series, e.g. iphone 4S or iphone 4 Series of devices. Operating System DeviceOperatingSystem Track the operating systems (OS) that are interacting with your site, such as ios, Android, Windows Phone, along with new operating systems such as Tizen or Sailfish. Operating System Version DeviceOperatingSystemVersion DeviceOperatingsystemModel For a more detailed breakdown of OS, these parameters provide the precise version used on a specific device. Browser Type BrowserType This shows the type of browser (mobile or desktop) that a visitor is using. Browser BrowserModel BrowserModelSeries The name of the browser, such as Chrome, Android Browser or Opera Mini etc. or name of the browser and version (e.g. Chrome 32). Browser vendor BrowserVendor This shows the company responsible for the creation of the browser, for example Google or Mozilla. Bots, crawlers and search engines DeviceIsBot Find out whether a device accessing your site is actually a bot, crawler or search engine. Netbiscuits

2. Visual and audio experience Display How your site looks on mobile devices is the web equivalent of a first impression on a date. However, the look is highly dependent on the screen upon which the site is being viewed. Also, customers with different screen-sizes may behave differently - they may expect different types of content or navigation, in different places on the screen. Equally, physical screen-size is only one consideration, alongside other factors such as screen resolution or whether the user prefers portrait or landscape orientation. For example, those customers who have much higher screen resolutions will react positively to sites and brands that use images that show off the quality of their device. Shows the diagonal size of Screen-size (diagonal) HardwareDisplayDiagonalSize accessing device displays in inches. Resolution Screen orientation: landscape or portrait. Full screen HardwareDisplayHeight HardwareDisplayWidth DeviceCanSwitchDisplayOrientation BrowserEventsCanOnOrientationChange BrowserHtml5AnimationCanRequestFull Screen Shows the absolute pixel height and width of the display. Checks if the device supports both portrait and landscape orientation and whether the page is being requested in landscape mode. Shows whether web content can be presented using the full screen. Interaction via the display In many cases, the screen provides a dual function, where it also acts as the input mechanism. Touchscreen Parameter Touchscreen type Parameter(s) or parameter group HardwareCanTouchscreen BrowserCanTouch HardwareDisplayInputType Description Checks the proportion of customers who are ready for touch functionality versus those who may not be able to use certain features, such as integrated maps. There are two main types of touchscreen: capacitive and Netbiscuits

resistive. Capacitive touchscreens only work with bare fingers (or require a capacitive conductor to make them work), while resistive touchscreens can be used with any stylus or gloves. Supporting devices with the right experience Often, marketers will attempt to fix conversion and bounce rates by altering content and re-evaluating the impact. However, given the variety of devices and the specific file types that may or may not be supported on customer devices, it may not be content alone that causes problems. Netbiscuits Mobile Analytics enables you to identify whether your targets are being impacted by something other than content. Fonts Check whether you are delivering text which is legible on the device accessing your site. Don t forget, smart TVs are increasing in sales and more people will be BrowserCssFontSizeSuitable accessing content from far screens as opposed to the traditional near screen use of laptops, tablets and mobile phones. How will this evolving use change customer interaction with your site? Images Video formats Video: HTML5 support BrowserCssCanSvg BrowserHTML5VideoCanH264 BrowserHTML5VideoCanMPEG4 BrowserHTML5VideoCanTheora BrowserHTML5VideoCanWebM BrowserHTML5VideoCanVideo There s growing use of scalable vector graphics in web design, which provide cleaner images when rescaling pictures such as company logos. But are all your users ready for this file type, or should a fall-back be offered? There are numerous video protocols to choose from. These parameters can be used to determine the most highly recommended video formats for your traffic. This parameter can be used to check browser coverage for support of HTML5 video tags. Netbiscuits

3. Speed and Site Performance Speed The speed of a site has a direct impact on how customers behave. Due to its fundamental impact on bounce rates and conversion, it is worth segmenting customers along these lines. For instance, customers can be segmented into high, medium and low performance profiles based on hardware features such as the device s specifications or the graphics power. The CPU frequency is measured in MHz Device performance (core and determines the performance and HardwareCPUFrequency processing unit: CPU) speed of a device. The higher the frequency, the better the device. Graphics capabilities Memory HardwareGPUFrequency HardwareRAM Similar to CPU, the GPU frequency helps to evaluate graphics performance. The HardwareRAM parameter returns the device's RAM size in MBs. The higher the RAM, the more memory the customer has and the better the device performs. Higher RAM also suggests higher-end (and more expensive) devices. Bandwidth A customer will leave a site if it does not load quickly. This parameter enables a marketer to check how bandwidth could impact customer engagement. This can vary significantly according to different types of device. For marketers, it is a chance to determine whether there is too much content on a site, or room for richer content. This is the result of an on-device test for bandwidth connectivity. The score determines the quality of the connection; the higher the score, the faster the connection. This is then evaluated as a Bandwidth InternalBandwidthScore network equivalent. For instance, a score InternalBandwidthNetwork of above 86 is similar to an experience on an LTE or WiFi network, while a score of below 6 is equivalent to an experience on a GPRS network. The scores delivered indicates a connection speed that is equivalent to the following: Netbiscuits

Bandwidth Score Between 0 and 5 Between 6 and 19 Between 20 and 59 Between 60 and 119 Description Very Slow. This is equivalent to a GPRS connection. Slow. This is equivalent to an EDGE connection. Medium. This is equivalent to a 3G connection. Fast. This is equivalent to a 3G+/HSDPA connection Very Fast. This is comparable to a 4G / WiFi / LTE connection. Network Connections These parameters can be used to determine how advanced customers are in relation to emerging technologies such as high-speed 4G networks. The level of technology to which customers have access to will determine the type of experience these customers expect based on what s being marketed to them by their network operator. 2G These devices support the CSD network HardwareBearerCanCSD protocol. It is roughly the equivalent of a 2G speed connection. 2.5G 3G 4G (LTE) WiFi / wireless LAN HardwareBearerCanEDGE HardwareBearerCanGPRS HardwareBearerCanCDMA HardwareBearerCanEVDO HardwareBearerCanHSDPA HardwareBearerCanUMTS HardwareBearerCanLTE HardwareBearerCanWLAN These devices support the EDGE or GPRS network protocols, roughly the equivalent of a 2.5G speed connection. These devices support the CDMA, EVDO, HSDPA or UMTS network protocols, which are roughly the equivalent of a 3G speed connection. These devices support the LTE (long term evolution) network protocol. It is roughly the equivalent of a 4G speed connection. These devices support the use of wireless LAN/ WiFi network connectivity. Netbiscuits

4. Customer Expectations A customer s expectation of the experience they have when visiting a site and their preferences for interaction will often be determined by the feature and functionality of their device. Customers will have access to different levels and types of technology, such as Bluetooth and near-field communication (NFC), through to gesture control and eye tracking. Expectations are often set by the technologies available, especially amongst customers who have paid for the most leading-edge technologies. Meanwhile, location-based services can provide a much better and more personalized experience for customers. Customers who have activated GPS and who are actively sharing location details, will have higher expectations than those who prefer not to share this information. Parameters can be used to determine customer personas that are likely to have high expectations versus those likely to have average expectations. Features and functionalities Bluetooth HardwareBearerCanBluetooth This shows that the device has Bluetooth connectivity. Camera Cookie support Location NFC (Near field communication) Storage HardwareCanCamera BrowserCanCookie HardwareCanGPS InternalLatitude InternalLongitude HardwareBearerCanNFC BrowserHtml5StorageCanLocalStorage This parameter checks if the accessing device is equipped with a camera. Cookies can reveal more about customer groups and their preferences, or dictate the level of personalization that can be delivered. This parameter indicates whether the browser is able to store and use HTTP cookies. The first parameter shows if a device has GPS. The other parameters are the result of dynamic testing for the geolocation coordinates. Client-side JavaScript must be used to attain this parameter. Used by a growing number of applications, the most famous being mobile wallet, this parameter shows the devices and volume of traffic that supports NFC transfer protocol. Whether the browser can support local storage determines the levels of interaction and personalization that are possible for customer segments. This parameter checks if the browser supports local storage. Netbiscuits

5. Maximizing reach Maximizing reach is key to brand marketing success. Parameters in this area help to identify which strategies are best for achieving this. Many projects or initiatives may involve revamping content to include more video, for example, but what if we could forecast in advance what kind of impact this may have on conversion, abandonment or bounce? Identifying the proportion of customers who are truly video-ready versus those who may struggle with rich media content is a vital step towards understanding implications of new content strategies. The following examples are focused on how mobile analytics can be used to ensure continued reach against the impact of rolling out new technology strategies, such as HTML5 sites, whether to implement Responsive Web Design, or adopt a video content-led approach; as well as helping to identify any areas of existing implementations that may be underperforming - not due to wrong content, but due to other, technical reasons. HTML5-ready If you are considering a HTML5 strategy, it is worth evaluating how many customers to your site are sufficiently HTML5-ready. For a device to be HTML5-ready, most of the following parameters are required: HTML5 Canvas element BrowserHtml5CanvasCanCanvas This parameter tests whether the canvas element is supported, which is required for a device to be HTML5- ready. HTML5 Forms HTML5 Geolocation API HTML5 Storage HTML5 Video HTML5FormCanInputRequired HTML5FormsInputTypeCan HardwareCanGPS BrowserHTML5LocationCanGeolocation BrowserHTML5StorageCanLocalStorage BrowserHTML5VideoCanVideo Either one of these are required to be true in order for a device to be HTML5- ready. These parameters check if the hardware supports GPS and whether the browser is ready for HTML5 geolocation. Both of these are required to support the HTML5 geolocation API. Checks if the browser supports local storage, necessary for offline HTML5 capabilities. This parameter can be used to check browser coverage for support of HTML5 video tags. Netbiscuits

Responsive Web Design Responsive Web Design (RWD) requires CSS media queries. However, without adapting content, responsive web pages can also cause large page loads, so the experience will be better on higher performance devices. This parameter can be used in conjunction with the speed and performance parameters mentioned earlier. Media Queries BrowserJavascriptCanMatchMediaApi Browser can run the API for determining Media Query support using JavaScript within the webpage. Video-ready There is a drive towards providing more content rich, video-led websites. However, visitors are also impatient, so it is vital to ensure that available bandwidth and device performance are powerful enough to enrich rather than damage a customer s experience when migrating to a video-led content strategy. Also choosing the correct formats, or offering fall-backs will be essential to a successful video-ready site. BrowserHTML5VideoCanH264 Choosing the right format is vital for maximizing reach. This parameter helps discover the support needed for various Formats BrowserHTML5VideoCanMPEG4 formats amongst the visitors to your site. BrowserHTML5VideoCanTheora To ensure maximum reach, it may be BrowserHTML5VideoCanWebM worth considering an adaptive web design approach, depending on the landscape of your customer base. Bandwidth HTML5 Video capable InternalBandwidthScore BrowserHTML5VideoCanVideo This is the result of an on-device test for bandwidth connectivity. The score determines the quality of the connection; the higher the score, the faster the connection and the better the video experience. This parameter can be used to check browser coverage for support of HTML5 video tags. Netbiscuits

Troubleshooting While actual testing generally sits within the web development team, marketers can find out for themselves if there are specific CSS/CSS3/HTML5 components that are not functioning for a given audience, such as HTML5 forms not working on a payment screen. This avoids having to rely on developer device testing alone. This can help to identify whether KPIs are being impacted by technical considerations, as opposed to content issues. This facilitates a better dialogue between the marketer, whose targets may be being impacted, and the technical team. Browser capabilities Originally, mobile browsers were cut down versions of their desktop counterparts, or specially designed browsers optimized to work well with small screens, low memory and low bandwidth. Today, most mobile browsers typically support similar functionality to desktop variants, such as the AJAX protocol, although there remains some variation when specific features are compared. Mobile browsers include Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox for Mobile and NetFront among others. AJAX BrowserCanAJAX Ability to use the AJAX protocol with the browser. Browser behavior HTML5 Image support: SVG BrowserCanDisableInput BrowserCanJavascriptRedirect BrowserCanMailtoTag BrowserCanMetaRedirect BrowserMarkupCanHTML5 BrowserCSSCanSVG These parameters detail whether a browser is capable of being able to perform specific requests as defined in the parameter name. The browser supports the HTML5 doctype. Supporting the HTML5 document type does not guarantee that all HTML5 elements will be supported. The browser supports SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) styling properties (using CSS). SVG is increasingly preferred by developers due to the superior image quality when scaled (see graphic below), but is not universally supported. JavaScript BrowserCanJavaScript Checks whether the browser supports JavaScript. Markup BrowserMarkupCanCHTML The browser is able to render the mark- Netbiscuits

The browser is able to trigger the OnOrientationChange event. The browser is able to use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) The ability to use tables with the browser and the layout, format and styling properties that are supported are provided by these parameters. CSS and CSS3 capabilities CSS ( Cascading Style Sheets ) is used to separate the document content (HTML) of a site, from the presentation layer. Specifications are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Today CSS3 is the maintained standard, which builds upon earlier instances of CSS, but which also has specific features and functionalities relating to that release. Due to the patchy nature of CSS adoption, it cannot be assumed that all properties are supported by all devices. However, Netbiscuits parameters can be used to reveal precisely which CSS properties are supported by visitors to sites. This covers all the main groups of CSS properties such as animations, background properties, flex boxes, fonts, media queries, image handling, multi-columns, selectors, speech and transitions. Here is a sample of some specific themes of interest: This parameter can identify Aspect ratio BrowserCss3MediaQueriesCanDevice_ whether the media query for the AspectRatio aspect ratio media feature is supported. Fonts BrowserCSSCanFontArial BrowserCSSCanFontHelevetica BrowserCSSCanFontSansSerif BrowserCSSCanFontSize Checks if the browser is able to set and display specified font types, or adjust font size using CSS. The browser is able to create margins around HTML Forms using the CSS margin property The browser supports the method of displaying text or images before, or after the given element's contents using the :before and :after pseudo-elements. Checks whether specific CSS styling properties are supported. These parameters enable measurement of SVG support amongst the base of devices that visit your site. This includes more detailed information on SVG clippath support, in-line styling properties and animation The browser text overflow property in CSS. These parameters check if the browser can support navigation using arrow keys. Local media, including audio and video can be requested from a device. From a technical perspective, this can be done using the getusermedia() JavaScript call. Netbiscuits

HTML5 HTML5 is a response to the fact that the HTML and XHTML commonly used on the World Wide Web is a mixture of features introduced by various specifications. It is an attempt to improve interoperability and has been put forward as a solution to the difficulties of cross-platform development. HTML5 however, remains itself a moving target, rather than a fully completed standard. In September 2012, the W3C proposed a plan to release a stable HTML5 recommendation by the end of 2014 and a 5.1 version by end of For this reason, understanding which HTML5 properties are supported within a base of devices is important for determining which features may, or may not work on a certain proportion of devices. Netbiscuits covers all the most common HTML5 groups, such as audio, communication, HTML5 elements, forms, interaction events, location, HTML5 video and web workers. Below are some common parameters: BrowserHTML5AudioCanAudio These parameters allow full HTML5MediaCanAudioAsVideo interrogation of HTML5 audio HTML5MediaCanAudioMultiSrc HTML5 Media: Audio properties, such as single source and HTML5MediaCanAudioOnerror multi-source handling and error HTML5MediaCanAudioOnerrorSingleSrc handling.
