Our Commitment To Excellence This year, North Florida Regional Healthcare s commitment to serving the community has been more obvious than ever. We have been undergoing a massive transformation that is part of an overall $120 million dollar expansion. Nobody in Gainesville can ignore the towering cranes, steel frames, construction workers and of course, the challenges in parking on our campus during this time. Although construction is sometimes inconvenient, this expansion will make us stronger and more capable than ever before. Hospital expansion has been divided into phases. Some, like the Cancer Center, were completed in Construction began in 2010 for a project that will provide 28 more beds and a 562-space parking garage. Garage construction is expected to be completed this summer, and the hospital expansion in the months that follow. Other upcoming expansions include a new four-story patient tower and renovations to the existing tower, further expansion of the Cardiac Catherization Lab and Non-Invasive Diagnostic Cardiovascular Services, as well as the addition of maternity post-partum beds and a Level II NICU. Upon completion, North Florida Regional Medical Center will be better equipped to treat our steady increase of patients. Investments in the latest medical technology, coupled with our focus on quality and safety, will translate into the best possible patient care at Gainesville s community hospital. Building on our efforts to deliver exceptional patient care, we introduced TeamSTEPPS this year, a program that stresses employee teamwork and effective communication as key ingredients in providing superior medical care. Originally designed by the Department of Defense, the backbone of TeamSTEPPS is leadership, which it defines as the ability to direct and coordinate the activities of other team members, assess team performance, assign tasks, motivate team members, plan and organize and establish a positive atmosphere. When it comes to patient safety and satisfaction, each team member plays an essential role, one being no less important than another. It s ironic that a program that originated with an organization so different than caring for the sick has become a model for healthcare organizations like ours, organizations that continue to raise the bar for higher performance. Each year at North Florida Regional Healthcare creates change as we expand and grow, but one thing stays the same. Our passion for our patients perseveres. Our board, medical staff and employees act as a combined team that puts the patient first. Our patients want quality treatment from providers who care providers who remain by their sides and help them go home safely and get back to their lives. Our commitment continues, and so does our mission. Ward Boston III President & Chief Executive Officer

In addition to hosting the annual Holiday Pond Lighting and Easter Sunrise Service on the shores of its duck pond, North Florida Regional Healthcare is a significant force in several of the community s major charity events, including the March for Babies, ACS Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. As part of this year s campaign to benefit Making Strides, North Florida Regional introduced Standing Up to Breast Cancer. The campaign s symbol of pink flamingos literally stood out at its campus entrance, generated a healthy buzz on Facebook and translated into a bronze level fundraising award from the American Cancer Society. The American Heart Association s annual Heart Walk is another excellent example. In 2010, Gainesville s Heart Walk was held on the campus of North Florida Regional Medical Center. NFRMC President & CEO Ward Boston chaired the 2010 Heart Walk and has passed the baton to the 2011 event chair none other than NFRMC Chief Operating Officer Matt Davis. Like Boston, Davis has a passion for heart health, education and awareness. Davis has promised that NFRMC fundraising for Heart Walk 2011 will outdo Heart Walk A little competition is a good thing!

North Florida Regional Healthcare Awards and Recognition A proven leader, North Florida Regional Medical Center is fully accredited and is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, is a Bariatric Center of Excellence and is recognized by HealthGrades for Surgical and Maternity Programs that are 5-Star rated. In addition, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. (BCBSF) has designated North Florida Regional Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, Spine Surgery and Bariatric Surgery. 8 Our Commitment To Excellence Severe Sepsis Program Severe sepsis is the most common cause of death in the ICU nationally. Healthcare costs to care for patients with severe sepsis are nearly twice as high as those for other patients, and mortality rates are much higher as well. The Sepsis Program includes a four-tiered process and use of evidence-based bundles along with a designated sepsis coordinator. Team efforts are initially focused in the ED and ICU, with plans to go house wide later this year. QUALITY & PATIENT SAFETY Despite our achievements, HCA North Florida recognizes the importance of patient safety and continues to make it paramount. Our initiatives ensure the safety and quality of care given to our patients each day. InterMedHx (RxHx) Providers are routinely tasked with obtaining a list of a patient s current home medications a valuable part in the diagnosis and treatment of their patients. RxHx is designed to function as step 1 in this process by querying participating source medication databases, including pharmacies, payers, and pharmacy benefit managers. RxHx extracts available medication data, such as drug names, dosage, route, and frequency, and prints a personalized medication report - all within minutes of the initial registration. The attending practitioner can then easily review the report with the patient to verify the content and check for any OTC medications, physician samples, and health supplements taken. With today s growing nursing and pharmacist shortages, RxHx can enable a provider to reallocate valuable professional time to other tasks and functions which, in turn, can further reduce medical errors. Quiet Campaign In another example of our focus on safety and quality, North Florida Regional Medical Center launched a quiet campaign in The campaign s acronym is Shhhh and the letters stand for Silent Hospitals Help Healing Happen. Research shows a quiet environment lowers a patient s heart rate and blood pressure and may speed the healing process. Quiet helps patients to relax and also contributes to a less stressful atmosphere for both staff and visitors. The campaign began on the always-busy second floor and has since expanded. The posters, banners and signs for each floor are customized and feature photos of staff from the respective floors. Familiar faces remind everyone to Shhhh has put familiar faces on the quiet initiative and identified champions of the cause. Shhhh... Silent hospitals help healing happen PatientKeeper (PK) Vitals Captureä PK Vitals Capture is a computer software application that streamlines the process of capturing and recording patient vital signs and intake/output data. Nurses and patient care technicians (PCTs) enter this information into a handheld device right at the patient s bedside, saving time while also helping to avoid possible errors due to duplicated efforts. The information is transferred into Meditech MIS the hospital s information system wirelessly within a few minutes of being entered into the handheld device. This allows for faster, more accurate information for both nurses and physicians and less time spent documenting by the PCTs. 6

North Florida Regional Healthcare Seasonal Flu and H1N1 Preparation HCA North Florida joined the rest of the organization in enforcing stringent standards in preparation for this year s flu season. Following the strategy begun the previous year, employees providing direct patient care were required to receive vaccines for both seasonal flu and H1N1 or wear surgical masks while at work. Special signs were posted throughout our facilities with reminders for patients, visitors and employees to take precautions to help avoid spreading the flu to others, and hand sanitizer was conveniently placed at entrances and public areas to heighten awareness of This Way Just Drive Through for No Flu! Drive Thru just got Healthy. (352) FLU the importance of hand cleansing. With last year s tumultuous flu season fading into a distant memory, the concern was how to deal with potential low vaccination rates. The Immediate Care Center (ICC) came up with a unique solution. Understanding that oftentimes people forgo their annual flu shots due to its inconvenience, the Immediate Care Center (ICC) hosted a No Flu Drive Thru. ICC clinicians spent a Saturday delivering vaccinations just outside the entrance to the urgent medical care facility. Shot recipients drove right up to clinicians and received their flu shots, protecting themselves against three flu viruses, without ever leaving their cars. The event was so successful, the ICC plans to offer it again next flu season. The Discharge Lounge Away from the hospital s bustle, tucked inconspicuously within it walls, lies what may be the best kept secret at North Florida Regional Medical Center the Discharge Lounge. The warm and friendly room is stocked with snacks, reading material and televisions, giving discharged patients a peaceful place to wait for their rides. Discharge Lounge patients must be alert, oriented and stable, with minimal ambulatory needs and IVs discontinued. In addition to providing patients a convenient and comfortable place to wait for their rides to arrive, clinical staff say it provides a perfect opportunity for one-on-one teaching. Diabetes educators and dietitians, among others, say many patients are better able to listen and learn in the setting of the Discharge Lounge, and that learning translates into better and faster recovery at home. Elizabeth Mayes waits in the Discharge Lounge for her son. Staff stopping by to wish her well are (L to R) Justin Piazza, Rebecca Weseman, Sheryl Shaw, LPN, Robin Klapatch, LPN, Dana Perdigon, RN, and Jackie Brown, RN. Echocardiography Laboratory Accreditation North Florida Regional s Non-Invasive Echocardiography Lab earned ICAEL accreditation for Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography and Adult Transesophageal Echocardiography. ICAEL is the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories and recognizes labs like North Florida Regional s for providing the highest quality patient care and diagnostic testing. 7

Our Commitment To Excellence Emergency Excellence In late October 2010, the Emergency Department (ED) at NFRMC treated its first STEMI heart attack patient whose EKG tracings were transmitted in real time from the field as the patient was being transported. Bluetooth technology allowed paramedics to send the patient s EKG from the ambulance to the hospital s ED. Upon reading the EKG, North Florida ED physicians confirmed that the patient was experiencing the most dangerous of heart attacks. When the patient arrived, the cath lab heart team was ready, successfully opening the blocked artery in just 33 minutes. A STEMI heart attack, short for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction, occurs when an artery is fully blocked. This is the most life threatening attack, and its treatment time is critical. EKG transmission in real time from the field makes a world of difference. Real time EKG transmission from the field for patients experiencing dangerous STEMI heart attacks was a significant advance in emergency care during Alachua County Fire Rescue ambulances have been equipped with real time EKG transmission capabilities. North Florida Regional Medical Center s parent organization, HCA, will soon be equipping the ambulances in neighboring Bradford, Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy counties with real time EKG transmission. NFRMC is using smartphone technology to give patients in North Central Florida immediate access to its ED Wait Times on itriage. Area Smartphone users can download itriage from the app store for the iphone and from the market for Android or access itriage at The technology empowers consumers to evaluate symptoms, possible causes, treatment locations and get quality information based on the type of facility. North Florida Regional Medical Center is the first hospital in the Gainesville area to list ED wait times on the itriage application. 8

North Florida Regional Healthcare Cardiologists perform more than 2,000 procedures in the catheterization labs at North Florida Regional each year. Cardiac surgeons perform more than 300 surgeries at the hospital each year. Cardiovascular Care Continued growth within The Heart & Vascular Center of North Florida Regional Healthcare is part of the impetus behind both the current and upcoming expansions on campus. Each year, more than 2,000 procedures are performed in the catheterization labs at North Florida Regional, and more than 300 cardiovascular surgeries are performed. Dedicated to quality and excellence, the center s goal is to become a regional provider of quality cardiovascular care. Cardiovascular surgery has already received recognition at the national level for quality outcomes. Meanwhile, the focus on so-called Door-to-balloon time continues. Federal guidelines require that the time from the moment a patient experiencing a heart attack arrives at the hospital to the time the patient s dangerous coronary artery blockages are opened be within 90 minutes. Door-to-balloon times at North Florida Regional are routinely well within that required time frame and very often are significantly less than 90 minutes, beating the national average. Upcoming expansions on the hospital campus will increase capacity to treat heart and vascular patients and meet the increasing number of patients. 9

Our Commitment To Excellence Neurosciences & Stroke Care Designated as a North Florida Regional Medical Center is recognized by the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) as a Primary Stroke Center and accredited by The Joint Commission. NFRMC is also recognized as a Get With The Guidelines Stroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award Hospital. To receive the Get With The Guidelines Stroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award, NFRMC achieved at least 12 consecutive months of 85 percent or higher adherence to all Note: Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians and leading professional organizations recommendations Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under you policy at any facilities, please call your local Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield Plan. Get With The Guidelines Stroke Performance Achievement indicators and achieved at least 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines Stroke Quality Measures during that same period of time, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care. We offer treatment with thrombolytic (clot-busting) medication, which has the potential to limit the effects of a stroke in patients who meet specific criteria. Comprehensive spine services are available at NFRMC, including spinal fusion, disc replacement, laminectomy and kyphoplasty. Intra-operative image guidance is among the resources that are a part of the neuroscience program. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. (BCBSF) has designated North Florida Regional Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery. The Blue Distinction designation is a symbol of high value on research and evidence-based health and medical information. Blue Distinction Centers are identified as leading institutions that meet clinically validated quality standards and deliver better overall outcomes in patient care. Orthopedic Care Orthopedic surgeons at North Florida Regional Medical Center continue to take advantage of advanced technology to raise even further the level of quality for patients having joint replacement surgery. For patients having knee replacement surgery, robotic navigation increases precision in device placement for better and long-lasting results. For patients having hip replacement surgery, the arrival of the Hana Table makes possible the newer anterior approach. It is one of the least invasive surgical options, and most patients undergoing hip replacement surgery are eligible candidates for the anterior hip approach. The procedure requires the Hana Table, an advanced surgical table that makes it possible for surgeons to work in between the muscles, rather than detaching them from the hip or thighbones. This results in minimal tissue disturbance and smaller surgical incisions. The difference between conventional and anterior hip replacement surgeries is significant. Conventional surgery requires strict precautions for the patient, limiting hip motion for 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. Conversely, the anterior approach allows patients to bend their hips freely more quickly and bear full weight when comfortable, ensuring a more rapid return to normal function. Orthopedic surgeons using the anterior approach say it increases precise placement of hip replacement devices, and that translates into better function for patients and surgery that lasts longer. Note: Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians and leading professional organizations recommendations Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under you policy at any facilities, please call your local Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield Plan. 10

North Florida Regional Healthcare Comprehensive Cancer Care North Florida Regional Healthcare offers comprehensive cancer care. The newest part of that program is the 25,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, The Cancer Center. Treatment modalities at the center include Radiation Oncology, Intensity-Moduated Radiation Therapy, Image Guided Radiation Therapy, High Dose and Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery with the CyberKnife. A resource center in the Cancer Center atrium offers Internet access and research materials for patients. An oncology nurse navigator is available to help guide patients, families and caregivers through the cancer journey from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation. Our cancer program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a comprehensive community cancer program and provides access to clinical trials. The Cancer Center represents an investment of approximately $20 million and is located on the campus of North Florida Regional Medical Center. The arrival of SuperDimension for lung cancer patients adds to advanced technology at North Florida Regional in its oncology program. CyberKnife delivers radiation only to cancerous tumors while protecting healthy tissue, making it possible to treat lesions that otherwise might be considered inoperable or untreatable. 11

Our Commitment To Excellence Advanced Surgical Services While lung cancer cases may be dropping, the disease remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States with estimated new cases this year of more than 220,000 and estimated deaths topping 157,000. Cardiothoracic surgeons at North Florida Regional Medical Center now offer lung cancer patients more hope than before with a procedure that offers significant advantages. VATS an abbreviation for Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery is an advancement that allows a less invasive approach to surgery. Its numerous benefits have increased the popularity of VATS, which is used both diagnostically and therapeutically. Here s how it works; surgeons make two small incisions approximately two centimeters each. One incision is for the camera to guide the surgery. The other incision is for the removal of tissue that is possibly cancerous and, if the cancer is confirmed, to remove the portion of the lung affected by cancer. The benefits of minimally invasive thorascopic surgery are tremendous. In the past, surgeons operated through a long, 12-centimeter incision. The newer procedure offers patients a faster and less painful recovery. Cardiothoracic Surgeon Richard Proia, MD, performed Limited Incision VATS (Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery) for a female patient with suspected lung cancer. Limited Incision VATS is just one example of advanced surgical services available at North Florida Regional Medical Center. The Robotics Center In November 2010, NFRMC was home to the first single incision robotic hysterectomy in North Central Florida. The minimally invasive procedure was accomplished by Anthony Agrios, MD, OBGYN, using the da Vinci SI Surgical System. For the past few years, physicians at North Florida Regional Medical Center have offered robot-assisted hysterectomies. These surgeries are carried out through a few small, 1-to-2 centimeter incisions. But the operation performed by Dr. Agrios was completed through one single incision, a notable medical advancement. It is the first of its kind performed in the region between Tallahassee and Orlando. Through the use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, surgeons are able to perform complex and delicate procedures through tiny incisions with unmatched precision. The Robotics Center at North Florida Regional continues to grow as patients become more educated about the advantages of robotically assisted procedures. There are currently two da Vinci Surgical Systems used by physicians who are part of The Robotics Center. Procedures are also performed by gynecologic oncologists, general surgeons and urologists. For patients with prostate cancer, robotic technology also provides a choice for men who may decide, after talking with their physicians, that the CyberKnife will be the preferred treatment. 12

North Florida Regional Healthcare The Women s Center and New Beginnings North Florida Regional Healthcare once again received a 5-star rating from HealthGrades for clinical excellence for the maternity care provided at New Beginnings in The Women s Center of North Florida Regional Healthcare. The 5-star quality rating from HealthGrades, the nation s leading independent healthcare ratings company, indicates clinical performance is higher than expected. This is the second year in a row the program has received a 5-Star rating. Each month, approximately 200 mothers deliver their babies in the New Beginnings maternity unit inside The Women s Center of North Florida Regional Healthcare. In 2009, 2,597 births were recorded. Annual births grew to 2,648 in 2010, and hospital leaders predict continued growth. Advances in care during 2010 included the arrival of AirStrip OB,an application to help keep physicians and certified nurse midwives in touch with their patients via their smart phones. In the past, physicians and midwives had access to fetal strips on remote computers in their offices or homes, but Airstrip OB allows providers to see the actual data on the screens of their smart phones no matter where they are. Data includes fetal heart tracings and maternal contraction patterns, as well as nursing notes and vital signs. The Diabetes Center The American Diabetes Association reports that 16 million Americans have diabetes, and few are aware of their diabetes only one in three. While diabetes is often a hereditary condition, it is still possible to develop diabetes even with no known family history. In many individuals, type 2 diabetes is often preventable through regular medical checkups and a healthy lifestyle. On National Diabetes Alert Day, the Diabetes Center at North Florida Regional offered free diabetes screenings for adults at two convenient locations. The event, which is held annually, is intended to both increase diabetes awareness and to serve as a wake- up call to Americans. The Diabetes Center at North Florida Regional Medical Center is nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association and is staffed by Certified Diabetes Educators. *The American Diabetes Association Recognizes this education service as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education. 13

Our Commitment To Excellence The Sleep Disorders Center The Sleep Disorders Center at North Florida Healthcare had a busy year. The Center earned accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The accreditation process is the national standard for sleep diagnostic centers and ensures that sleep medicine providers are fluent in areas such as testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up and physician and staff training. AASM accreditation is the gold standard for quality sleep medicine services, says Dr. Jorge Camacho, Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Center. Accreditation is a reflection of the quality of care that we provide and should provide an extra measure of reassurance to patients of our level of expertise in sleep medicine. Most recently, the Sleep Center moved to a new location. The new sleep hub is on campus in the medical office building at 6510 NW 9th Boulevard. Besides more space, the Sleep Center s new office is more convenient for patients, who will no longer need to park at the busy hospital. Imaging Services North Florida Regional Healthcare provides a comprehensive array of imaging services for inpatients at North Florida Regional Medical Center and for outpatients at Invision Imaging, located nearby on the hospital campus. Facilities are equipped with a broad range of diagnostic technology. State-of-the-art imaging technology includes a high field open MRI and 3-T MRI. A 64-slice CT scanner offers more than four times the speed of conventional CT scanners without sacrificing clarity. PET (Positron Emission Tomography) combined with CT is also available. Other diagnostic imaging services available through the North Florida Regional Healthcare campus include Bone Density/ Dexa; CT; Digital Mammography; Echocardiogram; EKG; Fluoroscopy; MRA; Nuclear Medicine; Ultrasound; X-Ray. At Invision Imaging, physicians and clinicians are proud of their longstanding commitment to radiation safety and protocols that deliver treatment with the lowest possible radiation dosage. In 2010, Invision Imaging also introduced Image Lightly, an effort to reduce radiation dosage during treatment of adult patients in North Central Florida. 14

North Florida Regional Healthcare Center for Obesity Surgery & Treatment For more than 25 years, physicians and staff of the Center for Obesity Surgery & Treatment at NFRMC have provided care for patients who choose weight loss surgery to help them achieve a healthy life. Our center has been accredited by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. (BCBSF) has designated North Florida Regional Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery. Centers who have this accreditation and recognition must meet rigorous quality indicators and outcomes to make sure high quality care is provided to patients. Our medical and clinical staff are committed to supporting and guiding patients to a healthy, new lifestyle. Stephanie Lanier and Jill Johnson are among thousands of patients who have chosen the Center for Obesity Surgery & Treatment at North Florida Regional for weight loss surgery. 18 Our Commitment To Excellence LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Charles Perry Construction, Inc. is the construction manager for the current $35 million dollar expansion project on the campus of North Florida Regional Healthcare. The project will be followed by the start of the new $58 million expansion project that is scheduled to be finished in September North Florida Regional Medical Center (NFRMC) announced funding approval of Phase IV of a multi-phase campus expansion plan, solidifying its regional outreach strategy for the growth of its heart and vascular program. Along with expansion of The Heart & Vascular Center, funding approval was also granted for the development of a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This unit will complement NFRMC s nationally-recognized maternity program, providing an expanded level of care to newborn babies. Overall, Phase IV of the Master Facility Plan includes the addition of a four-story patient tower, increasing the overall capacity by 92 beds. Phase IV also includes continued expansion of the Cardiac Catherization Lab and Non- Invasive Cardiac Testing. Phase IV comes on the heels of the current hospital expansion, a 28-bed expansion of critical care services, including the development of a 12 bed Cardiovascular ICU. NFRMC leaders expect construction of Phase IV to begin in September 2011 and to be completed in September North Florida Regional Medical Center s commitment to the needs of our community is reflected in this investment, says Matt Davis, Chief Operating Officer of North Florida Regional Medical Center. Within a period of three years, we will have doubled the capacity in our catheterization labs and expanded by 120 private beds. This expansion mirrors a need throughout North Central Florida that we intend to meet. The announcement of this latest expansion brings the total recent investment in growth at North Florida Regional Medical Center to nearly $120 million. Previous projects include the $18.7-million Cancer Center, addition of a $4 million Electrophysiology Cath Lab, approval for the expansion of the Women s Center OR and the current $35 million expansion that will deliver 28 new beds and a 562-space parking garage. Our vision is for a heart and vascular program that is regional in its outreach and comprehensive in what it delivers for patients, says Dr. Jeffrey Snyder, Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Chair of the Board of Trustees. This expansion is a big step forward in that vision. Within the walls of this large addition, we will all be working together to help patients meet the challenges of heart and vascular disease, says Dr. Mark Tulli, Cardiologist and Chief of Staff Elect (2011). This project will also allow us to redesign treatment areas so that heart and vascular care will be provided in areas that are closer together, allowing us to raise the bar of care even higher. At the conclusion of the current expansion and the Phase IV expansion, North Florida Regional Medical Center will have grown from 325 beds to a 445-bed full-service medical and surgical acute care referral center. This work is important to all of us, says Ward Boston III, President and CEO of North Florida Regional Medical Center. It will allow us to really make a difference in the lives of our patients, and that truly is our mission at North Florida Regional Medical Center, Gainesville s community hospital. 16
