Martha Nussbaum explains that compassion can function as an ethical bridge that links one person to the next. Conversely, affect theorists argue that compassion reaffirms unequal relations of power, as individuals to give or withhold their compassion when they see fit, leaving the circumstances that lead to suffering unaddressed (Berlant; Vogler). This and can set the stage for more nuanced analyses of the graphic depictions of violence that characterize this text. Patrycja Wawryka Romantic Realms: Locating Emotion in Reality Television In his 12th century work, On Love, Andreas Cappellanus presents "the rules of love" and states: This paper employs Bondi, Davidson and Smit representation of romantic love in the public realm of 21 st century reality television. Distinguishing between affect and emotion, the argument is made that as love travels from the private to the public sphere, it is transformed from what Kathleen Stewart (2007) terms an to think about the various ways in which romantic bodies are mobilized?

JoAnne Gordon " I just want to talk about my feelings " : Zines about Self-Care & Burn-Out as Affective A rchives nature of public cultures, (2012), my conference talk seeks to work through how we can understand zines about self-care and burn- are encoded not only in the content of the texts themselves but in the practices that surround their queer cultural theory in order to rethink the distinctions between positive and negative feelings, and to provide a cultural critique of the causes of burn-out and the need for self-care. 11h00 à 12h15 / 11:00am -12:15pm A T E L I E R/PA N E L 2: [ASH L E Y BI C K E R T O N, A M A ND A W A TSO N, C H A Y A PO R T E R] Modératrice/Moderator: Nasim Khatibsemnani Ashley Bickerton and Imperial Violence: The Ableist Paradigm and the Production of Militarized Masculinity Monsters are produced by what we consider different, and are informed by dominant narratives, representations and hierarchies of race, class, gender and sexuality (Halberstam 1995). This paper explores three military sex cases and the representations of the men involved; Abu Ghraib -killer Colonel Williams, and immature Aussie This paper asks what these representations tell us about militarized masculinity? Relying on the theoretical work of Garland-Thompson (1999), Smith (2011), Enloe (1988) and Howell (2011) this paper forces the comparison between ablelism, the idealized eugenic body, and militarized masculinity. Amanda Watson " After Bin Laden: " When Progressives Exploit a Violent Moment Two weeks after President Obama declared Osama bin Laden killed, The New Yorker marked the event with its May 16th cover reading, "After Bin Laden." In U.S. media, Osama bin Laden's death was fetishized as the event to bookend a new historical chapter in American culture. This paper addresses the concept of 'event-ness' as it occurs in hindsight descriptions of bin Laden's death and the September 11, 2001 attacks. I elucidate how insidious is this tendency to fetishize a moment in time by comparing the rhetoric of Presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama in their 2012 foreign affairs debate. I argue that dividing time by events, as is

commonplace in Western capitalism, propagates the racist representation of bodies, even among progressives. Chaya Porter White Future discourses of colonialism, race and gender in popular culture (Thomas). As I will argue, despite the acclamation of Star Trek as a definitively progressive text, with its future free from rapacious capitalism and xenophobic discrimination, its liberal future is predicated on the colonial project, past, pre woman scientist, reinforce colonial ideas about progress and whiteness. This paper also explores American frontiersman-ship and neo-colonial misadventure 12h15 à 13h15 / 12:15-1:15 pm D ÉJE UN E R / L UN C H 13h15 à 14h30 / 1:15-2:30pm A T E L I E R/PA N E L 3: C I T I Z E NSH IP A ND PO L I C IN G [M A RI A B E L E N, SA M A N T H A F E D E R, E M I L Y F I E L D] Modératrice/Moderator: Somayeh Ravasian K ashi Maria Belen Voicing Migrant Women's Interests via Social Media Web 2.0 tools such as social media are becoming increasingly important as governments transition into cheaper and greener technologies in order to carry out public policies and programs. In the Canadian federal government, the Open Government initiative hopes to promote open dialogue with Canadians as a form of citizen engagement via social media in order to create better policies and to enhance current policies and programs. However, do these tools for citizen engagement sui lives, struggles, and stories are often hidden, as they work in the private and personal realm of media, as well as offer recommendations for policy analysts when it comes to engaging hidden populations via Web 2.0 tools.

Samantha Feder Passing to Become Canadian: Assessing the Full-face Veil Ban During the Citizenship Oath The concept of passin group other than her or his own. Passing can occur across a variety of social boundaries such as gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, class and age. While some people adopt passing as a means to actively negotiate their identities, others receive unwanted pressure to pass -face veils during the citizenship oath compels niqab-wearing women to remove in order to become official members of Canadian society. Emily Field Racialized Imperial Policies of Violence: Securing Canada's Border and the Safe Third Country Agreement This paper looks at the historical use of the risky refugee narrative within Canadian refugee law. It traces how the risky refugee trope has been used in the past, and how it has been used to shape border policies post 9/11. I will be exploring how this narrative legitimises racialized imperial policies of violence focusing on the policies that were created from the Smart Border Action Plan including the Safe Third Country Agreement. 14h45 à 16h00 / 2:45-4:00 pm A T E L I E R/PA N E L 4 : V O I C ES, M O V E M E N T A ND A C T I V ISM [SA R A H M A C K E N Z I E, A NN A B O G I C, C Y N T H I A ST IRB YS] Modératrice/Moderator: Cathrine Chambers Sarah Mac K enzie in Princess Pocahontas and the Blue Spots and Bird Woman and the Suffragettes: A Story of Sacajawea Despite colonial efforts to silence Indigenous women, today we are telling own stories through literature and drama, (re)presenting histories of colonization and subverting the representational and, laterally, manifest violence to which we have been subject in historic and contemporary Birdwoman and the Suffragettes (1991) and Princess Pocahontas and the Blue Spots (1991), this resent gendered, racialized violence as a real, material technology of colonization, past and present, which works, together with myths of authenticity and of cultural purity, with misrepresentations of Indigenous women, and with the erasure of cultural memory, as a mechanism of cultural genocide. I contend that Mojica reconfigures colonial legacies of violence by presenting revisionist histories and subversive selfrepresentations that oppose denigrating colonial depictions.

Anna Bogic T ranslating into Democracy: Feminist T ranslators and Activism in Eastern Europe My presentation outlines my ongoing research on the Eastern European translations of the American health book, Our Bodies, Ourselves (1971). My study is based on the Bulgarian, Serbian and Polish translations of the feminist classic and the ways these translations engage with the local feminist discourses. I briefly present the specific socioeconomic and political contexts of the post-communist countries and the pro-choice activities of the Bulgarian, Serbian feminist translator-activists in their effort to import a Western feminist health text into the newly emerging democratic societies. Cynthia Stirbys: Why Aboriginal Women's Issues Should Matter to All Canadians present and illustrate the significance of her research in relation to current political issues that continue to impact the lives of Aboriginal women in Canada. Her research aims to develop a culturally-relevant framework that fosters a wellness model designed to change the intergenerational cycles of family disruption. She will invite audience members to consider how the issues might extend beyond Aboriginal women and how they might be relevant within their own lives.
