1 SYG 2000 Course Introduction to Sociology Learning Objectives In General, always be able to present a review of the key insights from any classroom video or activity connected to each chapter. Also, know the key terms and be able to explore the essay questions at the end of each chapter. Upon completion of the assigned material, you should be able to explore the following textbook learning objectives: TOPIC: THE SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE 1. Define Sociology and explain the insights and benefits of the sociological imagination/perspective. 2. Describe the social forces that gave rise to sociology as a discipline. 3. Describe the contributions of Auguste Comte, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Jane Adams, Harriet Martineau, W. E. B. DuBois, and Max Weber on the development of Sociology. 4. Explain the basic assumptions, concepts and questions associated with the Funcitonalist perspective. 5. Explain the basic assumptions, concepts and questions associated with the Conflict perspective. 6. Explain the basic assumptions, concepts, and questions associated with the Symbolic Interaction perspective. 7. Apply the three core theoretical perspectives to an analysis of life such as sports, watching television, war and colleges. TOPIC: SOCIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION 1. Explain how Sociology uses the scientific method for social analysis. 2. Outline the steps in the research process and describe the important features of each step. 3. Explain the processes and related concepts for each of the basic research designs: survey, experiment, observation, existing sources. 4. Explain the differences between quantitative and qualitative research. 5. Explore ethical issues involved in sociological research. 6. Calculate the mean, median, and mode from a given set of data. 1

2 TOPIC: CULTURE 1. Describe what is meant by Culture and explain why it is important. 2. Describe the connection between technology and cultural change. 3. Describe the role of symbols and language in a culture. 4. Describe the types of norms and explain how norms affect social life. 5. Explain the role of values and beliefs in a culture by using the U.S. as an example. 6. Distinguish between traditional culture and popular culture. 7. Explain why the concept of subcultures is important in understanding U.S. society. 8. Explain the impact of ethnocentrism and cultural relativity on our understanding of ourselves and others. TOPIC: SOCIALIZATION 1. Understand the socialization process as a form of social control, as a balance of conformity and individual adaptation, and as a lifelong process. 2. Understand and apply the major theories of socialization. 3. Discuss the impact of ageism, age prejudice, and discrimination, on life chances. 4. Understand the process of resocialization, as a social process by which social roles are radically altered or replaced. 5. Explain the theories of social development of self by Charles Horton Cooley, and George Herbert Mead and Sigmund Freud. 6. Understand the life course and development of human socialization at each stage. 7. Explore role of institutions as socialization agents e.g., media, schools, families, peers, work, the state, religion. Is everyone a socialization agent? TOPIC: SOCIAL INTERACTION 1. Differentiate between Micro-level and Macro-level analysis and indicate which level of analysis is utilized by Funcitonalists, Conflict Theorist and Symbolic Interactionist. 2. Explore social organization on Micro- and Macro-levels through groups, statuses, and roles. 2

3 3. Understand the theories and perspective used to analyze social interaction, including the social construction of reality. 4. Explain the development of societies through an evolution approach, e.g., the four preindustrial societies, industrial, and postindustrial. 5. Define the following concepts: social status, achieved status, ascribed status, master status, roles, role conflict role strain, role exit, and social networks. TOPIC: SOCIAL STRATIFICATION 1. Understand the four basic principles of social stratification. 2. Be able to differentiate between the caste and class systems of stratification. 3. Begin to understand the relationship between ideology and stratification 4. Be able to describe and differentiate between the structural-functional and social-conflict perspectives of stratification. 5. Be able to describe the views of Max Weber concerning the dimensions of social class. 6. Understand how the theories structural functionalism, social conflict, and symbolic interactionism each view stratification. TOPIC: SOCIAL CLASS IN THE UNITED STATES 1. Have a clear sense of the extent of social inequality in the United 2. Be able to critically consider the meaning of the concept socioeconomic status, and be aware of its dimensions. 3. Recognize the role of economic resources, power, occupational prestige, and schooling in the class system of the Unites 4. Be able to identify and trace the significance for various ascribed statuses for the construction and maintenance of social stratification in the United 5. See the significance of the global economy and its impact on our economic system. 6. Be able to generally describe the various social classes in our social stratification system. 7. Be aware of how health, values, family life, and gender are related to our social-class system. 8. Begin to develop a sociological sense about the nature of social mobility in the United 3

4 9. Be aware and critical of different explanations of poverty. 10. Develop an awareness of the problem of homelessness in the United 11. Be aware and critical of some of the dilemmas involved in public assistances and welfare reform. TOPIC: GLOBAL STRAFIFICATION 1. Be able to define and describe the demographics of the three economic development categories used to classify nations of the world. 2. Begin to understand both the severity and extensiveness of poverty in the low-income nations of the world. 3. Recognize the extent to which women are overrepresented among the poor of the world and the factors leading to this condition. 4. Identify and define the different types of human slavery that still exist around the globe. 5. Be able to identify and discuss the correlates of global poverty. 6. Be able to identify and describe the stages of moderation. 7. Be able to identify the keys to combating global inequality over the next century. TOPIC: GENDER STRATIFICATION 1. Explore the meaning of gender being a social construction. Compare and contrast the use of the term sex versus gender to identify men and women. 2. Understand the contributions that families, peers, schools, media and work play in the socialization process of gender roles. 3. Be able to describe the link between patriarchy and sexism, and see how the nature of each is changing in modern society. 4. Understand how gender stratification occurs in the work place, education, and politics. 5. Consider key arguments in the debate over whether women constitute a minority and be able to apply the intersection theory when exploring gender inequality. 6. Define gender through the use of the following theories functionalism, conflict, feminism and symbolic interactionism. 4

5 7. What are the consequences of social conformity to traditional gender roles? 8. Understand the extent women are victims of violence, and what we can do to change his problem. TOPIC: RACE & ETHNICITY 1. Understand the concepts of ethnicity, race, minority, and dominant groups. 2. Identify how discrimination works and is demonstrated in social practices like residential segregation. 3. Define racism and identify the ways in which institutional racism is embedded in the normal operation of social institutions. 4. Identify and apply the major theories of prejudice and racism, including, functionalism, symbolic interactionism s contact theory, and conflicts exploitation theory. 5. Understand the diverse experiences and histories of racial and ethnic groups in the United 6. Evaluate the major perspectives on the patterns of racial and ethnic relations in the United States, including amalgamation, assimilation, pluralism, and segregation. 7. Trace the pattern of racial and ethnic conflict worldwide and the major approaches to address the problem, including the civil rights and more radical movements in the United 8. Distinguish between the concepts of prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes. TOPIC: ECONOMY & WORK 1. Identify the characteristics of the economy. 2. Be able to review the history and development of economic activity from the Agricultural Revolution through the postindustrial Revolution. 3. Be able to identify and describe the three sectors of the economy. 4. Be able to compare the economic systems of capitalism state capitalism, socialism, and democratic socialism. 5. Be able to explain the difference between socialism and communism. 6. Be able to describe the general characteristics an trends of work in the U.S. postindustrial society. 7. Understand the impact of multinational corporations on the world economy. 5

6 TOPIC: POLITICS & GOVERNMENT 1. Understand how propaganda is used to justify authority, and explore the use of censorship to influence public opinion. 2. Power is the ability of one person or group to influence and control others. Explore the exercise of power from influence to force/coercion in defining authority accepted as legitimate to dictatorships. 3. Compare and contrast Max Weber exploration of the three types of authority Traditional, Charismatic, and Rational-legal authority. What does Weber say about Bureaucracies. 4. Compare and contrast peoples access to the political institution through the functionalist: Pluralist Model to the conflict theorist: Power Elite Model. 5. Define the class, race and gender make up of those who create the laws and legislation that govern society in the U.S. How much diversity is there in the 535 sets of congress, or for those who have been elected president of the United States? What are the costs of running a senate or any political campaign? 6. Define the class, race, gender and age make up of those most likely to vote in presidential election years. What are the two sides to voter apathy. 7. The military is the single largest government employer. Explore the class, race, gender, and cost dynamics covered in your textbook and in the classroom. 8. Explore the social changes attributed to the industrial revolution and understand how post industrialization is now changing the dynamics of the economy once again. What role do terms like deindustrialization, multinationals and downsizing play in our changing economic structure. 9. Compare and contrast capitalism and socialism as economic systems. TOPIC: EDUCATION 1. Be able to describe the different role of education in low-income and high-income countries. 2. Compare education in India, Japan, and Great Britain to that provided in the United 3. Be able to identify and describe the functions of schooling. 4. Grasp the relationships among education, occupation, income, and social mobility, and explore how education supports inequality. 5. Understand the controversies over ability and achievement testing. 6

Be able to discuss the major issues and problems facing contemporary education in the United States today. 8. Be able to identify and evaluate alternatives to the current structure of the institution of education in our society. TOPIC: HEALTH 1. Explore the historical changes in definitions of health and sickness across time and between societies. What social pressures have led to anorexia nervosa, bulimia and steroid use for American use and how does this affect society? 2. Explore the dynamics of class, race and gender in terms of access to health care and quality of health care in the U.S.. Compare that to health care access in other industrialized societies such as Sweden, France and England. 3. Explore the three core theories view of health care, functionalism: sick role, conflict theories: brain drain, and symbolic interactionism. 4. Explore the cost and benefits for fee for service health care versus Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO s). What role do specialist and third party payments play in rising health care cost? 7
