4 ADULT SKILLS COURSES COMPUTER CLASSES NEW: NCD355/ Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3 This 60-hour course provides an introduction to HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to develop Web and Windows Store applications. The course helps you to acquire basic HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript skills that you can use to prepare towards the Microsoft Certified Solution Developer certification (Windows Store Apps or Web Applications). Diploma NCD783/ Introduction to Microsoft Suites This course covers the basic features of 2007 and 2010 Microsoft Office Suite programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Students learn the basics as well as the workplace terminologies of each program. Functions covered include document setup and formatting in Word; creating formulas in Excel; producing simple PowerPoint presentations; and managing in Outlook. 5 Session Two: NCD022/ Beginning Swimming for Adults Level I An introductory course for those who cannot swim or have limited ability, this course includes the study and practice of such basic swimming skills as water entry, body and breath control, floating, leg and arm movements, and safety skills. Time: 10:00 10:50 a.m. NCD023/ Beginning Swimming for Adults Level II This course helps students, who must be comfortable in deep water, to develop confidence in their strokes and to swim greater distances. The course also introduces the elementary backstroke as well as diving and additional safety rules. Time: 10:00 10:50 a.m. NCD041/ Beginning Swimming for Adults Level III This course enables students to develop confidence in stroke readiness and covers the front crawl stroke, deep water skills, side breathing, the elementary backstroke, and diving. Time: 10:00 10:50 a.m. TAI CHI NCD929/ Simplified Tai Chi I This course covers the 12 basic forms of Simplified Tai Chi, an ancient, yoga-like martial art that combines a comprehensive series of gentle physical movements, coordinated breathing, and meditation designed for health, flexibility, self-defense, and spiritual development. Tai Chi reduces stress, positively effects the nervous system, and improves cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, concentration, posture, balance, and coordination. The course includes screenings of Tai Chi videos. Saturdays, April 12 through May 3 Time: 10:00 11:30 a.m. Cost: $ Instructor: Mei Jin Lu, Professor, School of Eastern Culture and Philosophy Registration Deadline: April 5 KIDS ON CAMPUS GRADES 1 AND 2: KOC109/ Learning through Literature In this course, students will learn how to develop listening skills to increase comprehension and writing skills and will use descriptive words and phrases to increase vocabulary. Students with limited language skills benefit from sharing ideas through brainstorming. Children maintain electronic journals, work within the facets of Microsoft Word, and develop Power Point presentations. Students further their skills with fractions, decimals, and percents and explore techniques for improving their problem-solving skills. Time: 11:00 11:50 a.m. KOC028/ Beginning Swimming for Kids Level III This course enables children to develop confidence in their strokes and swim greater distances. The elementary backstroke, diving, and safety rules are introduced. 7 KOC036/ Beginning Swimming for Kids Level V This course enables students to refine the breaststroke and sidestroke, swim greater distances using the backstroke, and study additional safety skills, including how to swim when leg cramps develop. KOC90/ Swim Team Prep Designed to help students who have successfully completed Beginning Swimming for Kids Level V, this course enables student to refine the skills and competitive strokes required for participation on a swim team. Strokes include freestyle, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly, and skills include breathing and timing, body position, balance and motion, starts, and turns. Participants focus on swimming with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Class is limited to eight students. Cost: $ KOC120/ Junior Lifeguard Course The Junior Lifeguard Course provides young, experienced swimmers with practical knowledge and skills they can develop in preparation for becoming a lifeguard. The course includes: use of rescue equipment, water safety and basic water rescues, emergency response, pool rules and regulations and swimming refinement. Participants must be ages 9 14, and able to swim 100 yards continuously using both the front crawl and breast stroke, tread water for 60 seconds and swim under water for a minimum of 10 yards. 9 ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT COURSES LANGUAGE AUDITING PROGRAM The Language Auditing Program enables individuals to audit undergraduate language courses on a non-credit basis for a full semester. Course offerings include English as a Second Language (ESL) as well as French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese. Those interested in auditing a language course should consult the undergraduate master course list at The Language Auditing Program is administered by the Office of Continuing Education. With the permission of the department chair, auditors may also be welcome in other undergraduate courses. Tuesdays, January 21 Monday, May 12 Cost: $ per course CAREER DEVELOPMENT CERTIFIED ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELOR PROGRAM Courses offered through this program are applicable towards certification as an alcohol and drug counselor by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of New Jersey, Inc. New Jersey City University issues a certificate stating the study hours completed for each course. For information on certification requirements, visit its website at C103/ Diagnostic Summaries (approval number pending) This course provides an overview on how to write a diagnostic summary based on the results of separate assessments by an alcohol and drug abuse counselor. Students document ongoing treatment needs identified through regular assessments and formulate goals, objectives, and treatment methods based upon assessment findings. Students provide specific information to the client regarding the structure, expectations, and limitations of the counseling process. Students provide individual therapy using relevant and current client data. Students assist clients, family members and significant others in the recognition of the role of defense mechanisms (especially denial and minimization). C205/ Group Counseling Approval# 82014C205 The course provides students with an introduction to conducting group counseling sessions. The student is able to provide group therapy by modeling, directing and facilitating the developmental stages of group work in order to promote client growth. Students assist clients and family members in establishing and maintaining new behaviors or changes in behavior in order to minimize relapse. Students acknowledge cultural and lifestyle differences which relate to emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Students will define the meaning of half-life, therapeutic dose, effective and lethal dose, distinguish between tolerance and withdrawal, distinguish between fat and water solubility and describe effects of various drugs of abuse on the major physiological body systems. CERTIFIED ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS TECHNICIAN (CEHRS) NEW: NCD338/ Certified Electronic Health Records Technician Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate understanding of the reasons for which the integration of technology into healthcare is necessary; demonstrate skill and competence in the operation of the EHR, as well as compliance with clinical standards; demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts in health data management along with an understanding of the importance of proper database management in a healthcare setting; define and understand privacy, confidentiality, and security in healthcare and the relationship to the electronic health record and health information management; understand appropriate electronic means of communications with patients, particularly the use of mobile and wireless communication in healthcare (Fax, mobile phone, and ); demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology as it applies in the health care setting; understand that office skills and the ability to perform basic office functions may be a necessity to the overall duty of an Electronic Health Record Specialist. Certified pharmacy technicians are responsible for many of the technical and administrative duties related to drug dispensing that were previously performed only by licensed pharmacists. Course topics will include medical terminology, prescription interpretation, basic calculations, and dosage forms. A 23% increase in the number of retail prescriptions over the past five years has led to a greater demand for pharmacy technicians. Students receive 20 hours of instruction and independently complete four hours of classroom observation. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to earn a CE, secure a teaching position, and begin an alternate route program to earn standard teaching certification. REAL ESTATE LICENSING COURSE NCD214/ Real Estate Salesperson s Licensing Course Approved by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission, this course provides the required educational experience for individuals planning to take the State of New Jersey Real Estate Salesperson s (Agent) Licensing Examination and conforms with the Commission s 75-hour course requirement. Course topics include principles of agency, real estate mathematics, and regulations required by the Real Estate Commission. If not notified of a course cancellation, report directly to the indicated course location. Payment/Withdrawal/Refunds Full payment must be received by the registration deadline for each class. Non-attendance does not constitute a withdrawal. Refunds will not be made on this basis. Those wishing to receive a full refund must complete and submit a withdrawal form, available at the Office of Continuing Education, three days prior to the first class session. Those who do not drop a course three days prior to the first class session will incur a 50% charge of the course price. Cancellations The Office of Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel courses. Cancellations will be made one week prior to the first class session. In the event of a cancellation, those registered for the course will receive a 100% refund. Certificate Replacement NJCU is not responsible for lost or stolen certificates. For a replacement, complete a certificate replacement form, available at the Office of Continuing Education. There is a $10.00 fee and a two-week waiting period for each certificate replacement.
