8 TECHNOLOGY Blended Learning in Music Education Blended Learning is an approach that integrates classroom and online resources, utilizing current tools (Internet, Web 2.0/cloud-based computing, mobile devices), in order to personalize student learning. It is often associated with flipped classroom, project-based and 21st-century learning, and other technology rich activities. As educational resources are increasingly available online, both less proficient students (needing help/guidance) and "high fliers" (needing challenge) benefit. Teachers who need to differentiate instruction (due to ability, topic, or even class absences) are helped as well. These blended learning offerings are increasingly being required of teachers in all subject areas. Topics included in the course include: examination of blended learning models, working with various content creation tools (web apps, screencasts/videos, podcasts), learning platforms (wiki, website, moodle, ebook), and planning/executing blended learning activities/courses MUS 536A, Sec 01 2 credits, $640 Instructor: Scott Watson Location: Welte 205 GarageBand Does It All! Creating music through multimedia projects and the ability to share them with one¹s peers is at the heart this course. Using software platforms such as Audacity, Garage-Band/Soundation, imovie, participants will complete projects designed for desktop computers or hand-held devices and can be easily implement in their own classrooms. These include: Intro to Audio Editing Project: Found Sound beat boxing/ostinato; Audio Editing Project: Audio Ethnography Project; Video Editing/Ear Training Project, and Video Creation & Film Scoring Project. CCSU can provide an ipad and/or apps for this course as well as the participants can bring their own MUS 502A, Sec 01 2 credits, $640 Instructor: Amy Burns Location: Welte 205 8
9 Conquering the Common Core with Technology: Student Learning Centered Multimedia Projects The Common Core State Standards define specific knowledge and skills that students should have within their K-12 education. Regardless of the content area and curriculum, students will need to demonstrate their knowledge. Fortunately, skills related to the use of 21 st century technology, exist at all levels of the Common Core. Traditional music creation software and other media creation tools are easy for students and teachers to use and can be a perfect complement to Common Core assessment and student production of a digital portfolio. Participants will get hands-on instruction in how to use video and multimedia production tools including creating music loops, composing original music, audio recording, video/photo input, editing and exporting for final product creations meeting criteria in the Common Core. Techniques on use of the software, lesson plans and projects related to specific Common Core expectations will be explored. All material in this session can be transferred to software on the PC platform MUS 505A, Sec 01 2 credits, $640 Instructor: Barbara Freedman Location: Welte 205 From Productivity to Creativity: ipads in the Music Classroom Discover how the ipad can enrich your curriculum and be used for productivity, presentation, composition, performance, and much more. Whether your school is 1:1, has an ipad cart, or just one ipad available for use, this course will provide insight into strategies and tools needed for enhancing student learning and fostering musical understanding as well as supporting classroom teaching and rehearsals. Many relevant apps will be explored, useful accessories will be demonstrated, and practical applications for the music classroom and rehearsal room will be developed and shared. Participants will be provided with a list of free and paid ipad apps that will be explored during the course prior to commencement, with the additional cost of apps not exceeding the price of a textbook.
