3 The City of Rome Roma caput mundi Rome was founded on 21 April 753 B.C. and since then the City has always played a crucial role in Italian and European history. It was the capital of the Roman Empire and the heart of Catholicism. Its historic center is listed as UNESCO patrimony, testifying the history of almost three millennia. The fruits of artists and architects hard work for the Popes and their families, especially during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, can be admired in the magnificent creations in Rome.
